Taking a while to get to 5000
|
^ Thats an awful lot of juggling and a lot of trust in the GM that any UFA will have to have. Especially one that is staring down his last long term deal if he's being sold on 6-7 years.
If you're willing to buy into a quick re-tool/turnaround based on a house of cards type plan you may as well stay in Arizona for 8x8 (or more)

I am of the belief that Hall wants to play in Calgary. Not only is it a place he would consider but it is the place he wants to be. The Flames will offer a long term big money deal with ownership telling Hall of their commitment to win. I feel like Hall growing up here and being a Flames fan along with the drive to stick it to the Oilers are among the reasons he is looking to come here.
If I am wrong on this (I easily could be) then my whole plan is garbage. I am not sure they would move Monahan but I do think there is something to replacing Gaudreau with Hall+what they get for Johnny.

It’s not just Cozens, but I think he needs to be the centrepiece of the return from Buffalo.
|
I think you have this backwards.
Due to the Sabres positional needs (2nd line C over a LW) and contract term and value the Flames would get more from the Sabres for SM than they would for JG.
If the Flames are going to retool and take a sideways step, or backwards, the deal is Cozens and Montour for Monahan IMO
On another note, no way do the Sabres give up two assets like Cozens and a top 10 pick for two years of JG. If that backfires and JG walks (entirely possible given that it is Buffalo) you’ve set you org back by half a decade at least. Add in a RHS D as well? Nonsense.

I don't know how relevant this is, considering how subjective the numerous periodic or annual "prospect rankings" tend to be. "Highly regarded" by whom, and on the basis of what criteria? A more pertinent comparison is the movement of top prospects from individual organizations, all of whom will rate their own prospects higher than outside sources in the first place. These get traded frequently, as demonstrated above.

Saw this on Twitter. Hockey 30 (I don't think this is a reliable source, maybe along the lines of HockeyBuzz???) is reporting that Mark Giordano is in Montreal. Hockey 30's source is Louis Jean. I believe this means Louis Jean of TVA Sports.
This probably means nothing.
But just for fun, imagine Gio is traded to Montreal. What would the return be?
My thought: Max Domi and Victor Mete for Mark Giordano.

Doesn't Montreal already have Weber and Petry as vets on the blueline? I'm not sure Gio is the right guy for them.

Montreal wants the oldest top pair in the league?
Domi and Mete would work for me.

Monahan will not be traded unless it is Monahan+ for a better center, which is extremely unlikely. If the Flames are going to upgrade their center position it will be by adding a center, not trading Monahan and adding a lesser center like Domi.

Giordano is a damn fine blueliner. Could be better suited for a 2nd pairing at this stage, but that's only based on this past season where almost everyone on the team fell off a cliff from a production perspective.
If the Flames really did make Gio available, they'd get a significant return.

There is a really great article on the Athletic today by Dom Luszczyszyn ranking the top 20 UFA's based on their projected game score value added (GSVA). A model he has created to try and estimate a player's value to their team as they age and as the cap grows. Since it's behind a paywall I won't get into the details, but a few notes on some names that have been thrown around in this thread:
- Before the season Hall was by far the best UFA available, but some regression this year has him as #2 behind Pietrangelo. His production dropped off, but he also suffered the lowest shooting % of his career at 6.9%. Concerns about his injury history, but a bounce back is likely. Probably won't hit mvp levels again, but should be a solid contributor for the next six seasons. Calls him a steal at 8 million per season given the Duchene contract.
- Barrie doesn't push the play at 5 on 5 and likely isn't worth what he will be paid. Can't deny his powerplay success, but he is a luxury a lot of teams won't be able to afford.
-Really low on Hoffman and Vatanen. Calls them empty calorie players.
-Brodie is a solid complimentary piece that drives play at a modest rate, but teams need to be wary that they aren't getting Gio with him too. Shorter the term the better- will likely be pushed down the depth chart as he moves into his 30's. Should provide value for the next 5 seasons.
- Gustaffson is a poor man's Barrie who is even worse defensively. Had a terrible season in Chicago after his 60 point outburst. Possible the Chicago system is to blame as he led the Flames defensemen during the playoffs in multiple play driving metrics, but Chicago sample is bigger. Views him as a PP specialist who can play bottom 4 minutes- has value, but cost is crucial (closer to 3 than 5).

Yeah, there's no doubt that Gio helps a lot of teams, and at 6.75 for only two years, he’s not outrageously expensive.
From a Flames perspective, moving him gets a lot of return and cleans up the expansion draft situation.

Dom Luszczyszyn from the athletic projects that Hall will get an estimated $8.33M x 6.3 years.
7 years seems like a guarantee, but he has got some sort of model for projecting I guess.
EDIT: beaten to it by Bax

I hope the Flames sign Hall. I'd happily see 7 years and 8M AAV. With a lot of the actual cash being paid out in years 1-5. Even toss in a NMC to get him to sign here.
and I'd also love to see them snag Pietraneglo and Markstrom. This off-season has two top tier free agents and then a whole bunch of middle tier rubbish.
Stay out of the middle tier. Hall, Pietraneglo, Markstrom - or bow out of free agency all together.

I have 5 years at 7 million a year. Hometown discount paired with Tree magic sprinkled in.

I thought I was pushing it, that's a mighty optimistic scenario.
That would be a smaller contract than the last one he signed which was $6,000,000 x 6 years for $36,000,000 total. If he signs for $35,000,000 total this off season I will be awfully surprised.
