Oh my god Colbert.... "when he says electric pen he means where he'll keep the immigrants." Way too funny.

On the issue of Trump's speech, the best that can be said is, at least he tried to hit a positive tone. He is not a good orator, and his words seem hollow.

Apparently Iraq is coming off the banned list as well. Trump also apparently met with folks from Kuwait over the weekend.

Watched the highlights of the speech this morning. He definitely sounded more restrained and dare I say it, "presidential". But like others have mentioned, all that proves is that he can stick to the teleprompter. It's obvious he had absolutely nothing to do with the writing of that speech, and he still peddled the same garbage, just with a softer tone.

Here's the fact check from Politico:

Bernie's response to the speech:

Trump deflecting responsibility for the Yemen raid. How presidential of him.

http://www.politico.com/story/2017/0...atality-235517

Quote:
“This was a mission that was started before I got here,” Trump told Fox News in an interview from the White House broadcast Tuesday. “This was something that was, you know, just — they wanted to do. And they came to see me. They explained what they wanted to do, the generals, who are very respected.”

Trump veered into effusive praise for his generals, calling them “the most respected that we’ve had in many decades” before pinning Owens’ death on the them.

“They lost Ryan,” the president said.

Yeah, it was planned when Obama was in power and he (Obama) said to wait for a better opportunity because there were too many risks. Trump pushed it ahead to show what a big man he was and how Obama was too soft. As a result, they murdered a lot of people in what should be considered a war crime.

This guy just can't keep his foot out of his mouth. Or maybe it's his head out of his ass.

All he has to do here is offer some calm words and pleasant platitudes about the tragedy of the situation, the gravity of his new job, and above all else the courage of the soldiers involved and the gratitude every American feels for this soldier who lost his life in the service of his nation.

It's not hard, but instead he says "it's not my fault, it's those guys over there!"

It's sort of a snapshot of how childish he is and how clueless he is about the responsibilities he has.

A lifetime of being a conman doesn't prepare you to make life and death decisions or accept responsibility. Who knew? Well, some people knew. The "not stupid" people who voted for him apparently didn't.

The flags in the lobby of the State Department stood bathed in sunlight and silence on a recent afternoon. “It’s normally so busy here,” marveled a State Department staffer as we stood watching the emptiness. “People are usually coming in for meetings, there’s lots of people, and now it’s so quiet.” The action at Foggy Bottom has instead moved to the State Department cafeteria where, in the absence of work, people linger over countless coffees with colleagues. (“The cafeteria is so crowded all day,” a mid-level State Department officer said, adding that it was a very unusual sight. “No one’s doing anything.”) As the staffer and I walked among the tables and chairs, people with badges chatted over coffee; one was reading his Kindle.

“It just feels empty,” a recently departed senior State official told me.

This week began with reports that President Donald Trump’s budget proposal will drastically slash the State Department’s funding, and last week ended with White House adviser and former Breitbart head Stephen Bannon telling the attendees of the annual Conservative Political Action Conference that what he and the new president were after was a “deconstruction of the administrative state.” At the State Department, which employs nearly 70,000 people around the world, that deconstruction is already well underway.

...

A lot of this, the employee said, is because there is now a “much smaller decision circle.” And many State staffers are surprised to find themselves on the outside. “They really want to blow this place up,” said the mid-level State Department officer. “I don’t think this administration thinks the State Department needs to exist. They think Jared [Kushner, Trump’s son-in-law] can do everything. It’s reminiscent of the developing countries where I’ve served. The family rules everything, and the Ministry of Foreign Affairs knows nothing.”

When Van Jones comes out and says it was exactly the type of unifying speech the country needed to hear, it must have resonated.

Hopefully (although I won't hold my breath) this is the beginning of a president who truly acts like one.

Also, who cares if the dems didn't stand up? Its not a popularity contest to see how many people you can get to applaud. The dems have seen Trump spew garbage out of his mouth for a year or two. All of a sudden they should forget everything and jump behind Trump because he has a couple of positions they quasi agree with?

EDIT - also, something that I heard pointed out this morning... For 8 years, Republicans were against Obama spending on things like infrastructure. Yet now they are totally behind Trumps idea to do the same thing? I have no idea if people did or didn't stand up when the idea was presented, but I doubt you will be harping on conservatives anytime soon for their hypocrisy.
That was fairly amazing as far as presidential speeches go. Do they have paid maternity leave? New giant infrastructure spending program. Merit based immigration. National healthcare exchanges. Broad import tax. I get that it's just words but I don't remember Republican presidents saying this.

That's why he made it a point to have that widow there, sitting beside Ivanka, and then leading an applause for over 2 minutes. In his mind he is absolved of any possible wrongdoing and free to carry on.

I was just thinking last night, my dad is a pretty big Trump supporter, but I think his business is going to get absolutely savaged when Trump sticks his import tax on non-American products. He builds and sells lightsport aircraft but all of the parts are shipped in from Colombia (not sure where the metal is manufactured) and he just does the assembly.

Its unlikely the Chinese are going to happily buy US debt if the US is going protectionist so crank up them printing presses, that leads to an increase in inflation, good plan in a country with enough personal debt to choke a pig.

I'm guessing it wont be just Muslims trying to sneak into Canada in a few years time.

On the topic of Russia. Two new breaking stories.

https://www.washingtonpost.com/world...=.eafe3e9eaf61

Quote:
Then-Sen. Jeff Sessions (R-Ala.) spoke twice last year with Russia’s ambassador to the United States, Justice Department officials said, encounters he did not disclose when asked about possible contacts between members of President Trump’s campaign and representatives of Moscow during Sessions’s confirmation hearing to become attorney general.

One of the meetings was a private conversation between Sessions and Russian Ambassador Sergey Kislyak that took place in September in the senator’s office, at the height of what U.S. intelligence officials say was a Russian cyber campaign to upend the U.S. presidential race.

https://www.nytimes.com/2017/03/01/u...imes&smtyp=cur

Quote:
WASHINGTON — In the Obama administration’s last days, some White House officials scrambled to spread information about Russian efforts to undermine the presidential election — and about possible contacts between associates of President-elect Donald J. Trump and Russians — across the government. Former American officials say they had two aims: to ensure that such meddling isn’t duplicated in future American or European elections, and to leave a clear trail of intelligence for government investigators.

American allies, including the British and the Dutch, had provided information describing meetings in European cities between Russian officials — and others close to Russia’s president, Vladimir V. Putin — and associates of President-elect Trump, according to three former American officials who requested anonymity in discussing classified intelligence. Separately, American intelligence agencies had intercepted communications of Russian officials, some of them within the Kremlin, discussing contacts with Trump associates.

Then and now, Mr. Trump has denied that his campaign had any contact with Russian officials, and at one point he openly suggested that American spy agencies had cooked up intelligence suggesting that the Russian government had tried to meddle in the presidential election. Mr. Trump has accused the Obama administration of hyping the Russia story line as a way to discredit his new administration.

At the Obama White House, Mr. Trump’s statements stoked fears among some that intelligence could be covered up or destroyed — or its sources exposed — once power changed hands. What followed was a push to preserve the intelligence that underscored the deep anxiety with which the White House and American intelligence agencies had come to view the threat from Moscow.
