Smith is barely playing for the Heat on merit, so I don't think anybody is underrating him.

My point was that he needs to succeed at the AHL level before he can even be considered at the NHL level. He's on nobody's radar right now.

was listening to the treliving interview on 960, he reiterated that centre is going to be the most difficult position to acquire for vegas.
if we trade them backlund for a number 4 dman and a goalie, do we come out any further ahead?
plugs 2 holes and creates one. 2 steps forward one step back?
thoughts?

My thought is why do so many people want to trade Backlund?

Probably the high value...sell high
It would have to be a heck of a deal for me though...and even then I would hope they were also adding a forward in another deal

Never understood fans who want to sell high on a good player, rather than keeping said player to win hockey games.
It's situational I guess. But there is no reason to move Backlund.

Anyone is available for the right price... but Backlund's value to us is HUGE. Not only can he do everything well, he excels at driving play and shutting down other team's best lines. The 3M line was one of the best lines in hockey this year.
Another aspect of his value that is often overlooked, is that he shelters our young centres like Monahan and Bennett. Without Backlund logging the difficult assignments, it exposes Monahan (most likely) or Bennett, and I don't think either of them are quite ready for that. We take for granted that Backlund allows Monahan and Bennnett to develop at a much slower/safer rate that will help their development in the long run.

I would think that those suggesting trading do so because he has value but are unsure as to whether or not we can afford to keep him. I love having him, those elite two way guys are tough to find. Is $6m an unrealistic ask from his side if he repeats last season?

When Backlund signs his next deal he will be almost approaching 30. 5M-6M over 5 years is what he will be looking for that will take him to retirement. If Backlund wants to stay with the Flames something along 4-4.5 over 3 years would be good. I just don't see him taking the discount.

That depends entirely on Bennett and Jankowski.
It'd be pretty risky going into next season with our top 3 centers all being 23 and under in age, with one of them coming off a sophomore slump and another one with just a single NHL game under his belt, but the talent is there as long as it translates.

I don't want to trade him in the fact I want him gone but I look at selling high as an option. He is going to be 29 next summer and wanting a 5-8 year contract at likely $5-$6M per.
I think my position on the situation has been pretty clear. I am a believer in Sam Bennett and do not want him traded. Sam is the popular value asset I see a lot of Flames toss into trade proposals. For me Backlund is that player which is why I hope the Flames make a decision on Backlund this summer.
My first hope is they sign him to a 4.5-5x5 deal. If an extension can't be worked out this summer then I am in favor of moving him so we do not lose him for nothing or overpay to keep him

I was half listening to Friedman this morning and I thought I heard him mention something about a Fleury trade. Did anyone else here this? Or are my ears playing games with me.

I would amend "for vegas" with "for all 31 teams".
That's why teams don't like to trade centers, especially top 6 guys under age 30. When they do it's only when the return is a unicorn itself (like 6'4", ridiculously fast, skilled Seth Jones).
Backlund, and for that matter Bennett, Monahan, and Jankowski, are not going to be trade bait for a goalie or winger (unless that winger is Laine). They could have been trade bait for a top 3 defenseman if we severely needed one, but we already have Brodie/Giordano/Hamilton. Not a single one of the four is being traded for a mere #4 defenseman so long as they flash top two line capability, which all four have. And look no further than Ryan Johansen's injury for why you would rather have more capable centers than just enough.

yes he mentioned that he believes that Vegas and Penguins have a deal worked out with regards to Fleury, but he is not sure if Vegas will be the final destination for Fleury.

I think it's often a mistake to look at one roster movement in isolation, especially in the off season. Assets are typically managed in clustered moves, so you can't look at trading Backlund as depleting centre depth without knowing what other additions and subtractions there would be after that. Sometimes a lateral move, or a small sacrifice of "trading down" can be justified if it allows for other moves.
We can't get sentimental IMO and the "buy-low, sell-high" strategy is one the perennial winners employ all the time, outside of their absolute best players (although even sometimes then).
I'm certainly not itching to trade him, but he is legitimate trade bait IMO. If you want something good back, you need to give something good in return.

Sounds like maybe the Flyers as it's doubtful the Penguins would ever deal him across state.

Does a player's clauses (NMC and NTC ) move with them in a trade scenario? Is it different in an expansion draft scenario?
