I am skeptical the Phillips will get a long look by virtue of the fact that he doesn't Kill penalties. Hathaway, and Derek Ryan worked the PK. Lewis dresses regularly because he works the PK. 4th liners need to bring something extra to the table. At this point Phillips need to prove he is worthy of an offensive role if he wants to break into the Show.

I'd happily pay for Kadri for maximum 5 years, less than 7.5 mil per. Back half of the contract will be ugly but the first few years will be our window anyway.

if the Islanders are talking 7x7 and the Flames are still in it, I'm nervous.

Considering the one line you can't break up is Mangiapane - Backlund - Coleman due to their shutdown role (None of our wingers can replace Mangiapane defensively, we saw that when guys like Dube were tried there), I think with a Kadri acquisition the lines would have to shake out as follows:
Huberdeau - Lindholm - X
X - Kadri - Toffoli
Would be cool if rookies like Phillips and Pellettier could fill those third wheel 'X's - I think they really stylistically fit those roles. Phillips the waterbug speedy sniper, sort of how Duclair was for Florida. Pellettier a balanced secondary playmaker to setup Toffoli, sort of how Pearson was for LA.
Then Lucic - Ruzicka - Dube as a strong final line. Though I guess Lewis would be there

More from Seravalli, after hearing his podcast:
- Premature to say that Kadri has a deal with the Islanders, terms haven't been agreed to and deal hasn't been signed
- Kadri is still talking to other teams despite being offered 7x7 by the Islanders
- Flames are still interested in Kadri
- Avs are still in the mix, have offered less term to Kadri than everyone else, something like 4yrs x $6mil range
Maybe the Flames offer is between the Isles and Avs offers?

I would imagine most 4th lines get out scored five on five. Honest question - how badly does the average 4th line get outscored?

If we get another second line center, I’m pencilling in Pelletier on the third line playing with Backlund and Coleman. I think he’d fit there great and you couldn’t have to better line mates to learn from being a two way player.
I’d have Some form of Dube-Kadri-Tofolli/Mangiapane on the second.

Taking a while to get to 5000

If the Flames pick up Kadri, I'm betting Toffoli gets a run at 1RW to start the year and Mangiapane/Coleman flank Kadri
Pelletier beside Backlund would be perfect, not sure who gets RW if it isn't Coleman though. Ruzicka? Dube?

After what Huberdeau said about Treliving wanting to add more players during their dinner, I can't help but think he was referring to Kadri
If it does happen hopefully the term is 5 years.

You got me curious. Here are the 90 forwards who logged at least 1000 5v5 minutes over the last three seasons (2019-22), but had the lowest average icetimes 5v5:
I didn't really run any regressions etc... but just looking at the chart it definitely feels like good teams also have good fourth line players who outscore their opposition.
Side note - yikes Jay Beagle.

i still think there's a play to be made for Barzal, someone just needs to knock the right offer in for Lou. But Lou's not married to Youth and there were some rumblings stretching into last season that Barzal would be happier moving on from the franchise... if Kadri is most likely signing there I still think there's opportunity.

I would hope they move Monahan over Lucic although I am guessing Lucic would be the easier one to move.

If Kadri wants to land with a contender - that would make the Flames a lot more appealing than the Isles. Question is will he sacrifice some term, or trade lower AAV for longer term - to play here?
If Kadri was coming here that would make Monahan a 4th line C. If Monahan is healthy the Flames would have amongst the best center depth in the league.

Barzal would be an absolute gamechanger for us. I get that he's not a perfect player, but he'd be the best playmaker we've had at centre since Marc Savard. Suddenly a guy like Toffoli would have value on his wing too.

Assuming the Islanders rumor is true, why would Kadri take less term and salary from the Flames? Think the Flames have to give on one of those to get him. And since the Islanders are already at max term...

I'm fine with it.
The Flames have now created a 3-4 year window. I expect them to be awful after that. If the Flames have a bunch of unmovable awful contracts for 2-3 years, that may be the only way to force management into a proper rebuild/tank at that point. Ownership won't allow a rebuild generally, but if they have Kadri/Huberdeau and a bunch of other bad contracts in 4 years, the team will likely be bad and a natural retool/rebuild will occur.
A 7 million x 7 years for Kadri would be great.
Lindholm - Kadri - Backlund is legit centre depth.
