Yes that would be best , we just won’t get much of anything for him

Doesn't Lucic gain value after 1st of July when all the bonuses are paid?

We could get something like the 7th for moving his contract?

Something like

to Buffalo: Lucic +3rd +5th
to Calgary: 5th

Buffalo gets a 3rd for $333k in real money for 2 years, Buffalo takes a cap hit of $4.666m in year one and $291k in year two, Best part is Edmonton still gets a cap hit of $666k and $42k.

Calgary gets $5.25m in cap space for a 3rd and signs Lucic for league min after buyout.
Nvm you want Buffalo to buy him out

After the signing bonus, Lucic is only owed $1M.

Easily tradable to a team that doesn’t care about a cap hit, or simply wants to reach cap floor.

Probably for team looking to meet the floor for cheap

Did that bonus apply to next year's cap then? Are you saying we only get $1M cap space back?

Once Calgary pays the bonus, and then trades him, the cap is gone.

As long as he agrees to the trade, Lucic should be easy to move, as long as there is more than one team who wants to hit the cap floor cheaply.

The Flames would get the entire cap hit freed. Lucic makes four million this year, three million of that has already been paid. His cap hit is six million per season because in the first two years of the deal his actual salary was eight million, then seven in the third. So the cap hit is the the average salary.

Lucic's contract is extra weird because the team he signed it with, the Oilers, are still paying a portion of it. After the signing bonus he's only owed one million, and the Oilers are paying 750k of that.

250k salary for a 5.25million cap hit; prettying enticing for a rebuilding team who needs to hit the cap floor.

The soilers are retaining 12.5% not 750K.

Yep.

Their cap hit for him is $750k

I imagine they are paying 12.5% of his salary. Or maybe it's his salary + bonus?

I'm not sure.

Pretty sure it's just 12.5% of everything. Cap hit, actual salary & bonuses.

An example to illustrate what was stated above.

Oiler's are on the hook for 12.5% of the Salary and Caphit as that is the amount they retained.
  • Lucic's salary this year is $1.0m, with a $3m signing bonus tacked on and the AAV is $6.0m.
  • Signing bonus paid by Flames $2.625m this year on July 1st, Oilers pay $0.375m ($3m total for the signing bonus), so the remaining cash owed to Lucic is $1m ($0.875m Flames / $0.125m Oilers).
  • Cap Hit is $5.25m Flames and $0.750m Oilers.
  • If traded, Flames owe nothing, Oilers pay $0.125m real money, and retain the $0.750 AAV cap hit.
  • So new team can take on a $5.25m AAV cap hit for $0.875m of cash.

Don't forget 10% escrow. Lucic's $1m salary is actually $900K, of which the Flames/whoever would be on the hook for $787,500.

The Athletic has an article How the Flames drafted Johnny Gaudreau: ‘Who is this little guy?’ that looks to be what a ride and good-bye piece

Is getting Lucic's cap space that much of a priority if the 9.5-10 M put aside for JG is not used?

Yes because we need to deal with:

Mangiapane
Kylington
Zadorov
Gudbranson

and money for Tkachuk next year

It seems Johnny will dip his toes into considering switching teams. That's his right, and it doesn't mean he won't re-sign. It would be better for the team if he removed the uncertainty, but he can do what he does and dipping his toes in free agency will probably increase the Flames' offer, whatever it is.

Tkachuk as RFA is about to make bank with the QO regardless of the negotiations. Would be good to extend him but again, he's sticking to his rights and doesn't have to sign just because he started here.

Lucic, is a minor consideration. Would be nice to free that space up, especially given what I've "heard" is Mangiapane's response offer (only a semi reliable source for that info).

I do believe Treliving is handling this as well as anyone could. He's not playing up to the media, is publicly being very respectful of the players he's asked about, but his main leverage is, "we'll pay you this much and then you get to play here for that amount and a definite period of time". If a player would rather be in the East, there is no way around that. The ongoing arena fiasco doesn't help either.

Father of my daughter's best friend is a former Flame. He told me yesterday that most of the Flames alumni here think Johnny will re-sign with Calgary this week. I still don't believe this but for what it's worth, that's what people "in the know" think.

I think Johnny will be much like Landeskog last year. Use every bit of leverage he has to get the best offer from the Flames at the last minute. The Flames will say they want to know pre-draft, but they know that they won't come close to another guy anywhere near Johnny before or after free agency.
