If you are really into this show you should download the comics and give them a read. I did a while back and I'm trying to stay just behind the show. It's like an alternate universe and it is much grimmer (is that a word?).
I think the dilemna with Alexandria is control. This Lady is trying to build a society and assign everyone roles, eventually that will lead to rebellion. you can't take hardened people out of the wilderness and expect them to follow your rules.

I was thinking it might turn out to be a situation where Alexandria is under a threat from outsiders that they have yet to disclose to the group, and they are recruiting Rick's group to be their unwilling champions to fight that threat. Using savages to fight other savages. It would sort of fit with the sort of feudal breakdown of society developing in the wake of anarchy. Like how after the fall of the Roman Empire, leaders would entice nomadic groups to settle among them to create buffers or to fight with them.
In the end, I think it is obvious that Rick's group (or at least some of them) will just decide to take ownership of Alexandria.
Edit: It also occurred to be that maybe Alexandria is a doomsday cult. Seeing everyone at the party all drinking and eating kind of gave me a Jim Jones vibe. What a shocker it would be if they killed off half the group that way.

I got a few volumes of the comics for Christmas and couldn't put them down. Just finished the latest volume on the weekend. Highly recommend them.
I've enjoyed the show for a while but the comics are on a whole other level. Even though I like the comics better, I think they've actually increased my enjoyment of the show by being able to compare the decisions the show's writers and producers have made with respect to what source material to keep and what to change. Can't say I agree with all of their decisions, but I really do look forward to seeing what directions they take these characters and how they deal with some of the upcoming major plot points from the comics.

I agree that going to town and poaching a bike seems like a much better option than scavenging parts from all sorts of different bikes but I think the show is trying to set up some bond between the characters and Darryl turning wrenches in the garage probably sets up more future dialogue.

Or the gay equivalent of a penthouse letter.
You'll never believe what happened to me, My name is Daryl and I didn't think I'd be open to a man on man experience but......

Aaron said the partially assembled bike was there when they chose the house, "probably the previous owner, before the event" (paraphrasing). He also said he was going to try and put it together himself and would scavenge parts here and there. But he really had no idea how to do it, so if Daryl wanted he could have the bike. That he would need it, Aaron wants Daryl to become a recruiter for Alexandria.
Yeah a guy could probably get a "new" one from a dealership, but I would think if you loved tinkering with that stuff before the event, it would almost be a god send to be able to do it afterward.
Someone should be working on a Mad Maxx style zombie crusher.

I actually want to see this, but I think the show is trying to stay away from zombie cliches. Every single movie in the history of zombies had some type of modded vehicle to destroy zombies (Except Zombieland I think).
At least weld on a zombie deflector on the front of the vehicles. But I guess they won't get their hyundai sponsorship money if they mod the suv.

One thing that kind of bugs me, although pretty minor, is that they seem to avoid the "z" word. One group calls them "walkers", and another "roamers". I recall there was another name at some point... "biters" or something like that.
If this happened in real life (I know... I know), I am sure most people would just call them zombies. It's pretty much a universal concept in the English speaking world. Have they even said "zombie" once in the whole series?

In their universe "zombies" never existed before the outbreak.

Oh, ok I guess that makes sense. Did I miss that somewhere in the show, or would you have to read the books to get that point?

Three or four episodes ago when they were walking to Washington, I wondered why nobody has thought of grabbing bicycles.

I seem to recall them talking about it on Talking Dead. The concept makes some sense, and follows in a few other zombie movies. (28 Days Later, Last Man on Earth / I Am Legend.)
I say it makes sense because if a real Zombie outbreak happened in our world, we would be prepared enough that the first batch of zombies would be dispatched quickly. As we see in TWD, they first tried to treat the sick. (As seen as Rick leaves the hospital.) Then the military came in to kill everybody in the hospital (When Shane goes to check on Rick in the hospital.) That action actually ended up creating a lot more zombies than if they had left well enough alone.

The storyline reason for this is that in their world, the concept of zombies didn't exist prior to the outbreak, so the word simply didn't exist for the people to use.
The real reason is that The Walking Dead started out as a comic book and Marvel had a character called The Zombie that Stan Lee created in the 1950s and was featured in his own series in the 70s: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Zombie_(comics)
So, it was easier for Robert Kirkman to avoid using the term zombie in The Walking Dead than it was to worry about getting sued by Marvel (or paying them for the use of the word). Oddly enough, Kirkman later worked on the Marvel Zombies series of comics dealing with zombified versions of the Marvel superheroes.

It's also just a general unspoken rule in zombie culture for the world they're written in to have no prior knowledge of zombies. There are a couple exceptions out there though. Zombieland comes to mind.

They throw out the Z word on Z-Nation like it's going out of style.
Kind of to be expected when the word is in the shows title though.

Is that even possible? Hasn't the word "zombie" been around for quite some time?
