Blackhawks - '07-08 - missed playoffs, '08-09 - lost in conference finals (qualifies as being in Cup contention), '09-10 - won Stanley Cup.
Pittsburgh - '05-06 - missed playoffs, '06-07 - lost in conference quarterfinals, '07-08 - lost in Stanley Cup (certainly in contention), '08-09 - won Stanley Cup
Carolina - '03-04 - missed playoffs, '04-05 - lockout, '05-06 - won Stanley Cup
That's three pretty recent examples right there. Not saying it's the norm or even what the Oilers will do this year, but it's most certainly not "just unheard of."
Chicago finished 20th that year and 3 points out the the playoffs, and 26th the year prior, 28th the year before that

That said, it wouldn't be the first baseless extortion attempt in history. Innocent until proven guilty and all that...
Listen, I don't think we should judge anything until all the facts are out, but look at this picture of him and tell me with a straight face that it's extremely unlikely that he did this.

I wonder what Daryl's kid thinks about this? He's all grown up now as seen in all the NHL Entry Drafts. Doubt the wife is going to be to pleased with this story.
Yup. She didn't like his advances so she asked her husband to demand money? She didn't even deny that
The couple also have had issues with another Billionaire in the past. Sam Rahr or something like that. On my phone and don't want to look up the story.
Mind you, a look at Katz and it screams dirtbag.

It certainly wouldn't have been from nothing I'd imagine. Could be "seduce and profit" or "guy's a creep so I'll profit"
Yup. She didn't like his advances so she asked her husband to demand money? She didn't even deny that
Her 50+ year old former gambler husband turned FBI informant with a history of insurance fraud, who is now banned from casinos for his role in a money laundering scheme.
I don't doubt Katz propositioned her. I think if a lot of guys had a billion dollars they might be tempted to do the same. That one doesn't seem like a huge stretch.
I'm skeptical she was outraged by an offer. Her marriage looks very sugar daddy-ish to begin with.
I think this is mostly about her and her husband trying to get some quick cash out of Katz now that the husband can't gamble anymore.

So from 26th to final four in 2 years then? Still proves my point I think.
they went from 29th, to 28th, to 26th, to 20th, to conference finals - 3-4 years from the basement to becoming a contender, and 4-5 years to win it all.
I think that more proves the point that you were arguing against (below)

Katz seems like a strange dude. He makes lots of money and buys a very expensive toy that he admired from afar his whole life. Then buys some friends to run it, his childhood idols. In one of the oddest interviews I've ever seen, when asked "who inspires you", he says his biggest inspiration is... himself. Sounds about right. Ripped jeans and his shirtsleeve cuff tucked under an ostentatious million dollar watch - he wouldn't want you to risk you not noticing it, that'd be a waste of money.
The possibility that he tried to purchase intimacy and companionship from a beautiful women certainly lines up with what we know about his personality. Innocent till guilty and all that of course.
