Have not read the comics, but they are not from the comics. They are fair game to talk about as long as not mentioning things outside the show. There are multiple references to wolves and a w.

When they go to Noah's home community there is that "warning" spray painted on the wall of the square...can't remember exactly what it say, but something like "The Wolves are near". Then there's those lower torsos outside the community wall. With the wall smashed inward like someone drove a truck through it.

Then Rick hits the back of the pickup and a bunch of upper torsos fall out with the "W" on their forehead.

At Alexandria, Carl picks up the comic with Wolf Fight on the back cover.

Could be smoke and mirrors but I am betting there's a group out there calling themselves the Wolves and there's a fight coming.

Maybe Alexandria picked Rick and his group to protect them, maybe they don't even know about the Wolves.

I am guessing they don't, because they would at least lock the gate if they did...
My guess is that they are aware of the threat, and want to get the group attached to Alexandria so they'll be willing to fight.

There's also the possibility that Alexandria is not as peaceful as it seems.

Does anyone think if Rick and Carol try to take over Alexandria, Michonne will openly oppose them?

She seems committed to making it work with these people. To a lesser degree Maggie and Glenn seem committed to work it out as well.

I think Darryl is warming up to the community more than Glenn and Maggie. I would be curious to see who he sides with if Rick and Carol try a takeover. He is pretty tight with Carol, but this takeover would almost seem senseless to him.

I didn't read the comics either but as has been pointed out there was writing on the wall in Noah's town that said "WOLVES ARE NEAR" or something like that. Then there are these walkers with "W" on their foreheads. It's speculative but it's a reasonable guess that there's some group called the "Wolves" that are doing that to the zombies for... some reason.

Honestly I'd be totally game if this ended up being a rip-off storyline of the Magnificent Seven / Seven Samurai.

Him and the Mullet haven't been around, I think that we read too much into it and it's just budget, they add nothing to this part so they get to stay home and not get paid.

In some way.

I wonder if the Wolves are a group of people who trap walkers, carve the W into their foreheads, and then release a bunch of them into or around an established community like Alexandria or where the kid from Everybody Hates Chris's family was holed up to draw the people inside out? Then, when the people are distracted and drawn out, they could attack.

They're both featured heavily in the preview for next week.

It's kind of dumb though when they completely leave out characters for a few episodes, despite supposedly being in the vicinity of events happening, only to bring them back into the fold when conflict and major events start happening again. Like you'd think we would've seen them all at the welcome party (there were several, but others missing). At least have them standing in the background for some key scenes or something.

Seems lazy to me. But then again a lot of things have come across as lazy over the course of this show. LOST didn't have near the ratings or following of TWD and perhaps an even bigger cast, yet managed to fit in most if not all characters regularly, even if just minimal appearances, to at least inform viewers where all the pieces were in the grand scheme of events.

I really wish they wouldn't focus on one or two characters for such massive stretches of episodes. Like they didn't need to follow Sasha around for 1/3 of that episode just to show us that she's struggling to cope with the change of scenery. Luckily for them there's enough entertainment value every odd episode to let these things go, for the most part..

As speede5 said, it's a money thing.

Even though The Walking Dead pulls in great ratings, and shows like Mad Men and Breaking Bad were huge critical successes, AMC is still a relatively small player in the original programming game. Lost was on a major broadcast network and had the production budget to match.

The actors are paid by the number of episodes they appear in, so it works out better for the show's budget to have each of the minor characters completely missing from a couple of episodes each season. They make up for it by giving those characters a bigger storyline in at least one episode. Based on the preview, it looks like Gabriel will have a big role on next week's episode despite being nearly non-existent the last few.

Lost was also one of the most expensive tv shows ever produced so perhaps its not the greatest comparison. Game of Thrones might be the most expensive ever and they will skip over a character's story for a few episodes in a row sometimes (at least through the three seasons I've watched so far).

What stands out more to me than characters missing for a few weeks are when they have only a single line and are never heard from again. Like Abraham's "Who's Deanna?" which he spoke to someone off camera a few weeks ago. I believe it was about his only line and then he was never heard from again.

Do people think the core group is too big, then? They could certainly do the show with fewer. The swelling of the group has basically been to provide zombie fodder, apparently.

Alexandria seems just too perfect.

I'm still awaiting the other shoe to drop and for the group to have a revelation, or make some profound discovery about the place and it's people. Will that happen? Or is the place as advertised? Hmm..

That's why I said Magnificent Seven - let's say they've found out that other towns have been destroyed by these "Wolves", who may or may not have some involvement with that girl who sneaks out and / or a former Alexandria resident. To deal with this, they go and find some bad-asses. Enter Rick and co.

But because these townsfolk are also wary of the bad-asses, there's something they're not telling Rick's group (who even knows what it is). All of this will come out at the worst possible time, and Rick, short on trust, will flip out. Conflict results, internally within Rick's group and with the Alexandrians, and someone from Rick's group does something unforgivable (maybe Carol kills that kid, who knows). Then, or shortly following, the Wolves attack. Rick's group fights them off, but Deanna can't forgive what they did before, and they're asked to leave. There's a moment where you think they might just massacre everyone and take the town as suggested last episode, but Rick's better angels persuade him otherwise.

I dunno if any of that happens, but it's plausible.

In the preview for next week's episode, they show Gabriel setting up what seems to be some kind of church. And there was a brief scene with Eugene facing off with some of the members over something. So yeah they're poking around, but were apparently doing their own thing during the cocktail party.

I don 't know. That would just be too expected, like all of the other places they have visited that were "too good to be true". I hope the writers take a different tack here than how they proceeded with Woodbury or Terminus.

It would create some fantastic symmetry if they just turned the whole thing on its head. When they let that dude out of the C-can in Terminus and he was ranting about how "WE'RE ALL THE SAME! WE'RE JUST LIKE THEM!" it would be pretty cool to see Alexandria become the new Terminus, with Rick's group being the catalyst for its downfall.

All of this has happened before, and all of it will happen again. Cue up all along the watchtower.

Unrelated: can we at least admit that it's been a while since this show has been this interesting and fun to speculate about?

It's been a long while. Since the Governor.
I guess there is only so many ways to stick a zombie in the head.
I am too invested to quit watching, but...

The modern Family couple scavenging motorcycle parts while Daryl like motorcycles is a little too convenient.
I mean just go get a brand new one from a show room somewhere.
