I think he means if the Flames were to get Hamonic before the expansion, we'd be the ones losing someone we don't want to lose.

I would like to know who are the two other teams interested in Mike Smith? That rumor smells like a Coyotes leak in hopes of driving up a price for a player that they only may have one suitor if that. What other teams outside of the Flames would be desperate enough to take on a 35 year old goaltender with $12 million owing? That's the kind of trade that gets people fired especially if decent assets are going the other way.

Obviously the Flames can't acquire another D prior to expansion. Any suggestion I have would be with the caveat that it happens post expansion. The Flames can really only add a goalie and possibly a forward before expansion

Yeah, I was wondering the same thing.
Maybe Philly after the ED as they are supposedly looking for a stop gap until Stolarz is ready and Smith would be a pretty big upgrade n Neuvirth who they could easily send the other way in the deal.

I suppose you can never count out the Flyers but Smith seems like a lateral move from Mason and when you consider the age and contract (Mason will make nowhere near $6 million in free agency) it doesn't make a lot of sense. They would be better off going in the direction of Elliott.

Gotta think if Treliving has inquired about Smith it would be a Smith and Duclair package.

I could live with that for the right price.

Man, I am not sure about all the Smith hate on here. He had a pretty good year (.914 S%) last year on a bad Coyotes squad. He's got a decent price, and a good length contract to bridge to the youth. He should be relatively cheap too. Where is the downside?

Yes definitely a lateral move from Mason but Mason will command more than a 2 year stop gap term and its also possible his supposed personality issues may have worn thin with Hextall and tge Flyers.

How cheap though? Lebrun says they are not looking to move him but would for the right price, ie an overpay.

Apparently, Elliotte Friedman said the Habs are likely to trade Alex Galchenyuk on 630 CHED.
Now there's a player the Flames should be targeting.

I recall rumours from last year of a Backlund for Galchenyuk swap.
It still makes sense, both players took steps forward last year.

All good points, and if the Flames are going to have to settle for a goalie, Smith could work.
But there is a downside. Mike Smith will join Ramo, Hiller and Elliott in the parade of C+ goalies that have been here since Kipper. It's like Tabaracci, Wreggett, Fuhr, Braithwaite all over again.
I'd almost rather trade for one of the younger back ups even if the cost is 16OA. It's tough to give up a 1st but it could actually fix the problem for the next 7 or 8 seasons.
Or they could do both. Get a vet, like a Smith or Mason type and trade for a younger goalie who shows promise. Like Grabaur

Isn't Galchenyuk a winger now? Trade would leave us with a gap at centre right? I was thinking of him more as a winger for Gaudreau/Monahan

Would it?
Gaudreau - Monahan - Galchenyuk
Tkachuk - Bennett - Frolik
Versteeg - Jankowski - Ferland
Lazar - Stajan - Brouwer
