I know that.
I just read that was his rumored ask though.

Wouldn't be the first time a ridiculous "ask" was floated in the media only to have the contract come in far less.

I just wish he'd hurry up and sign with the Flames already.
Contract will suck on the back end, but he fills a huge need for the next 2-3 seasons while the Flames make a push, after that our cap situation is almost a blank slate.

That's exactly what I'm thinking, if Flames want to go get him, I wouldn't offer more than $7 x 4.

If they can get him for 4 years that'd be great, but I would give him the the 5th year if it was the difference between him signing or not.
4 x $7.0 ($28.0)
or
5 x $6.5 ($32.5)

Yes, don't mind giving him the 5th year if the AAV is lower.

Taking a while to get to 5000

So he didn't sign with the Isles after all? But what about sneaky old Lou?

9m x 3
8m x 4
7.2m x 5
6.5m x 6
Is what I’d be offering to Kadri.

So I think $8x 3 years is a massive overpay for sure, but if we are able to move pieces to make room for him, I would almost argue the difference between 8 and 7 means nothing if its the difference in us signing him vs someone else. This gives us a window.
Go for the cup and go hard. A 3 year deal is only 3 years.

The problem with Kadri is that it isn't just a simple UFA signing for most of the teams reportedly still in on him. It is a signing with corresponding cap moves and those cap moves have a cost.
Either the cap moves is to move out bad contracts and pay assets or it is to move out good contracts at a lower than normal value because other teams know you need to dump cap.
So not only is the question of what can you sign him for, but what it will cost to fit him in as well.

Yup, the days of free agents just being free assets are gone.

I would have to imagine those costs for dumping cap are quite high. Max pacioretty , a very capable top 6 winger was given away for free. For the islanders if Lou is wanting an asset back for Bailey I can’t see it happening. For the flames have to think the cost of trading overpaid 4th liner lucic or Monahan would be a big cost right now.

Lucic may be different because he's only owed $1M in actual salary. The trouble me be finding a team he'll approve a trade to.
Monny will need to prove he is healthy and productive prior to Calgary being able to move him, unless they want to attach a first round pick to him. If he does that, Calgary likely has as much reason to keep him as trade him.
Now if they can sign Kadri, they may have little choice, although they'll have big problems next year fitting in the raises of Huberdeau and (hopefully) Weeger, as presumably both Monny and Lucic will need to be moved out to fit in Kadri. But that could well be next year's problem.

They dont have to move them as both contracts expire at season end this year.
