I'm not defending the driver. I'm just saying that from the video I can't see any evidence that the driver did it on purpose.
I'm not even sure the driver noticed that something hit him.
I looked up 26th avenue on google map and I see a bike lane icon (the bike with the two arrows above it), but I don't see any actual lane markers to delineate the bike lane. How is that supposed to work? Does it just indicate that bikes and cars share the road?

I think I found it. It seems that it means "shared lane" and that bikes and cars share the road.
With the 5-6 seconds between being passed and the accident, if it was one car rear-ending another car, I think the following car would be deemed at fault. I'm not sure if the rules are different for bikes.
Pretty ####ty for the rider though. Drivers are hopefully becoming more aware of what sharing the road with cyclists means.

Be careful out there guys. My near hits in the past 2 weeks are 1+/day from cars.
I am absolutely sure that I am following the laws, etiquette, and communication (signals, body language, etc.). The feeling right now is just a rise of hostility and risks putting my life at stake.

Yeah, with some motorists, it's open hostility. I was blasting down 10th st yesterday next to sait in the bike lane. Was approaching that right hand turn into sait. I was probably going 40ish. As I approach the turn, I hear a car next to me gun it and cut directly in front of me (maybe 5 yards) into SAIT. If I didn't hammer the brakes, I'd still be picking the side of a car out of my teeth. Careful out there everyone. Already regretting not holding to my vow to ride only mtb.

I'm lucky. My commute is pathways except for 5 or 6 blocks down 8th street (by MEC). Even so, I've had my share of run-ins with cars. I've had people pass too closely, slam on the breaks in front of me, roll down their window and yell, try to cut off the side of the road and almost turn into me. Thankfully, these incidents are not too frequent.
I can't imagine having a longer, road-based commute. I'm sure it would be a daily occurrence.

I'm almost the same as you, I have about 2 blocks of shared road, then a while on dedicated bike paths, and then about 4 blocks of share road again.
~6 blocks and it's an occurrence per day. Still thankful of the paths!! The occurrences used to be even worse.

Just finished a ride between Peachland and Penticton and back.
This is the last time I will ever ride on Highway #97. The drivers are crazy.

Kelowna to Vernon is a nice ride along the back roads. When I did it though, some of it was unpaved before you get to Predator Ridge.

That's disappointing to hear. Whenever I drive along there I think it would be a good spot to bike, with wide shoulders. The only time I've ridden on the highway was during the PGAMO, and obviously the road was shut down for cyclists.
I've ridden in Kelowna towards Vernon and back on a regular day. The shoulders were pretty wide, and I felt pretty safe until I got just past Winfield. Right after Lodge Road the shoulder disappeared and a semi came way too close for me. I stopped my ride, went back to Lodge Road, and then biked on the back roads for a bit before heading back to Kelowna.

Yeah, I only have about 5 blocks of traffic to ride through, but it's an extremely busy road in an industrial part of town. I take my lane assertively, and haven't had any problems.

Looking to get back into cycling - Looking for a hybrid that won't break the bank, to ride around the neighbourhood with the kids, etc... Any suggestions?

Do you have a budget range you'd like to keep within? Everyone's bank breaking point is different.
Avoid Canadian Tire and Sport Chek unless you have someone else who can look over the bike for you.

Any brands entry level comuter for about $500 will work. And even though people crap on sportcheck the GT Orbea bikes there are decent. The assembly might take a few tries to get it adjusted right as the quality of mechanics is quite suspect.
I think the jump from $500 to $800 adds a lot of value in how the bike will perform.

I just bought a sweet hipster cruiser. Found a Simcoe Roadster (3 speed) on Kijiji for $250 that's in really good shape. Now I need to find a 7 speed wheel or hub and re-spoke.. 3 speed is not quite enough gears.
