Gillis was a pompous ass, (and not great at his job) Benning seems like a tone-deaf, oblivious old man. And not great at his job. Maybe his hands are tied with the players he has but he's a real oddball.

The following video speaks 1000 words in my mind

Why they put that up I don't know.
The giggling on the phone, having to explain who Virtanen is to Linden. I'm sure it's a case of looking worse than it is, but honestly ...

One has to wonder though if the handling of Higgins is going to make players think twice about signing in Van as UFA's. There's a reason GM's don't make this kind of stuff public and try and quietly move players that aren't part of the plan long term or going forward.
The optics of this all is really unprofessional even though they claim they are trying to do what's best for the player.

You're being too kind. This is but one example of him coming across to the media as...how can I put it...socially challenged.

It's funny looking back on when we were looking for a GM. Benning was at the top of the list of guys I was hoping for. Instead we got some nobody named Treliving.

It's kind if interesting how Benning, Weisbrod, Chiarelli got credit for the Bruins cup winning team when it was Jeff Gorton that made a lot of the moves that set them up for success. The more the years passed after Gorton left the worse the team got. Really for all we know those guys were bumbling idiots that stumbled on a gold mine as since they have left Boston in disarray they haven't exactly shown much on their own.

Team of intrigue now are the Isles. They've lost Hamonic and Boychuk for some time. Could be a good trading partner given the excess depth the Flames have. Russell would be a prefect fit for them IMO. Eklund seems to think the Isles were already looking for D men with some term left. He could also be of benefit for them for a couple of seasons.
Going through their Roster on GF, not seeing much in terms of good player fits, even prospects I am a little iffy besides the one they'd be hard pressed to give up in Barzal. Don't know what the current relationship is with Strome right now either so I wouldn't wager he'd be available.
They have 4.5m in cap space. I am assuming that is before Boychuks cap hit is onto IR. So they're in cap trouble. Maybe not a fit for Wideman but definitely a fit for Russell if there's roster player coming back of use to the Flames.

I have felt like Russell is a good fit there all season from the Isles end.
Lots of prospects but not sure who they would give up. Strome, Dal Colle, Barzal, and Pulock all feel like that would be an overpayment for Russell.
Flames probably want nothing to do with Ho-Sang.
Maybe a Beauvillier, Vande Sompel, Finn, Mayfield, Pelech, level prospect would be available.
I wouldn't mind doing something like a Russell + Wotherspoon deal where we give a long term prospect away to get a higher end prospect back. Maybe they want to unite the Wotherspoon brothers.

That's a bit harsh. Just because he can't crack the Nucks roster doesn't mean he should be contemplating assisted suicide!

Insider trading:
http://www.tsn.ca/nhl/video/insider-...impasse~786729
Once thought to be close to done, Kopitar contracts talks are at an impasse.
Not many teams with interest in Drouin feel that anything is imminent
means either Yzerman will wait til he gets what he wants or Yzerman has settled on one team leaving all others missing out
St. Louis, Montreal, Anaheim, Minnesota, and Ottawa should be mentioned as being in the mix
Yzerman likes Ceci, but Ottawa sees him as a top 4 defencman and unwilling to move him
If Vrbata hits the trade market he will be coveted and will not cost much.
Canucks may re-sign him to continue playing with the Sedins
Edmonton is not pushing Schultz out, but willing to move him if trade fits
Teams see Polak as a veteran depth d-man
Cowen will welcome a fresh start (has not made a formal trade request), but Ottawa still believes he is a valuable asset. Tough contract to trade
can you imagine if Kopitar makes it to UFA?

How could Justin Schultz be generating buzz? He's garbage. Someone keep Ryan Rishaug out of the graphics department.

In terms of the Islanders, Mayfield would be a decent return for Russell. He's a RD, good overall game and likes to hit. If Russell is worth a 2nd round pick, I would say that Mayfield is worth a second round pick, also, and fits the needs of the Flames better.
From that list of 'players of interest' on Insider Trading, I would suggest that the Flames should have at least a passing interest in Tyler Ennis. I have no idea what could be offered for him.

What on earth??? Why do you think I'm implying that??
Seriously though, the vets on that Canuck Roster, Sedin twins aside, aren't really any good anymore. And with the way the new NHL is now trending towards treating vets who are north of 30 and are on the downside of their career AND needing new contracts, that should be of some concern to a player who seems to be a real shadow of his former self. Because it's very possible Chris Higgins will need to look for alternative leagues to play in either next year or 2 years from now if this lesser player is now what Higgins is at this point.
As it is, there are many former NHL has beens & wannabes playing in the KHL & Switzerland, so it's not like that's a terrible secondary option.

Justin Schultz trade buzz eh? The same guy that's single handily lost the Oilers numerous games this season? The same guy thats so soft that if he was paired with Tomas Kaberle he would make Kaberle look like Scott Stevens in comparison? The same guy that has a point shot that's so weak it would make Phil Housley and Jay Bouwmeester snicker?
I really have to question the pro scouting of any team that would be willing to give up an asset for this guy as IMO he's an AHL defenseman playing in the NHL.
