Carolina owns Chicago’s 3rd rounder. I’d do that for Vladar

And then also Carolina’s own 3rd to retain half

I would take that 3rd round pick for him now. I get waiting for other teams to become desperate , but Carolina could easily look elsewhere before deadline taking them out. Then you’re back to zero teams being desperate.

Take the 3rd, because it also clears a path for an AHL guy who has very clearly earned it. That should be a focus of this season.

Cooley has earned it but let's not forget that Vladar is actually slightly younger than Cooley.

So it's not like you're opening the spot for a young prospect you developed and needs NHL time.

In the end you do what is best to maximize Vladar's value because that's more important than giving Cooley NHL time.

Is he, though? On a below average team, he is on about the 33rd percentile for quality starts. Even if he was on an average team, that’s above average for a backup. He would be below average for a starter, but you’re not claiming that he’s a starter.

So I just read that Eric Francis is speculating that there's a possibility of a Flames-Sam Bennett reunion?

I think he's out to lunch.

Steinberg politely told him just that on Flames Talk yesterday.

No but Cooley was signed for 2 years and Vladar clearly isn’t going to be here past this year

I can't really see it making sense from either side, but Eric Francis I guess.

OK, good. I read it second-hand on a rumor site.

I could see the Leafs getting involved, and I bet Edmonton would LOVE to reunite him with McDavid. Cap space notwithstanding.

Edmonton simply wont have the cap room and Im not sure he wants to work for Treliving again.

No idea what he values beyond getting paid, but if its a sunny warm locale the Kings make a lot of sense.

I’d love for my Bennett merch to be relevant again, but as a FA it does seem unlikely the Flames offer the most lucrative contract AND Sam wants to come back for a retool. Contenders will be making deals with the Flames to offload cap so they can be his next landing spot. I’d also argue he’s going to end up being a very expensive 3rd line center on this next contract.

I've always been a Bennett fan and it's enticing when I hear Bennett say that a big reason why he found his game in Florida was because he got to play on Huberdeau's line, which makes me wonder if re-uniting them could finally get Huberdeau producing at a clip worthy of his contract. But I agree that his upcoming contract is going to price him out of the Flames and I don't think he'll take any less just because it's the Flames. The big bonus of Sam coming back would be to watch those who have a habit of doing a 180 when a player is no longer a Flame, who trashed Bennett immediately once he became a Panther, do another 180 and be the defender of Bennett once he is wearing a flaming C again. Would be predictable, but still very entertaining!

I actually put 100% of the blame on Lanny's shoulders for Bennett not working out. Bennett was doomed from the start the instant he picked his idol's number - Doug Gilmour - incorrectly. He picked the useless and irrelevant 93 that Gilmour used in Toronto, rather than the glorious, Stanley Cup Winning and completely awesome number 39 that he used here in Calgary. Lanny should have told him.

I would take Bennett back as long as he agreed to fix this blunder and take the 39.

Wasn't Burke trying to do some "no high numbers" nonsense back then?

I can't remember who did that - it sounds like Burke. Wish Burke did push for that, as it would have been more likely Bennett would have turned into Doug Gilmour 2.0.
