You're not a cartoon writer that got a gig anymore, you've been doing this most of your career and you need to drop the crutch of being ashamed of your own show.
After watching him on TBS, it's becoming clear that NBC was right to drop him from a show with prestige.

Self-deprecation is the corner stone of most of the greats (Letterman 'dog and pony show', Conan ripping his own show). Its funny.
If you want someone that never bails on his 'did you see this in the news folks?' jokes, Leno will always be there for you.

'Conan' In Trouble? TBS Ramps Up Investment After Flagging Ratings
http://www.huffingtonpost.com/2011/0..._n_930855.html
TBS has staked a great deal on the success of "Conan," in hopes of building a new kind of comedy brand around the program. But viewership of the show has decreased 60% since it debuted nine months ago, after Conan emerged from his debacle with Jay Leno at NBC.
O'Brien trails his major competitors at 11 p.m., who include Stephen Colbert, Jon Stewart, Jimmy Fallon, David Letterman and Jay Leno. He even fell behind Chelsea Handler, a relative newcomer, during some weeks. O'Brien's total viewership fell from 2.4 million in the show's first month on air in 2010 to 958,000 people in July. In comparison, he drew an average of 2.9 million viewers as the host of "The Tonight Show" in the last half of 2009 through early 2010.
TBS recently canceled "Lopez Tonight," its only other late night show, in August.

Conan has lost a step since moving to TBS. I don't know if he has changed, or just what I think is funny has changed.
For that matter, I don't think David Letterman has been funny since about 2001.

I completely blame Andy Richter. The guy is just not funny and holds Conan back IMO. He's the reason I don't tune into Conan as much anymore.

i don't tune in anymore because Conan either refuses or is too afraid to stray from the traditional late night format. Stewart and Colbert succeed because they keep things fresh, where Conan goes through the same routines re-using many jokes in his monologue, has the same boring celebrity interviews (while Stewart and Colbert interview many very interesting non-celebrities), and he lost his best bits from his Late Night show and can't seem to come up with new ones
the best Conan has ever been was during the writers strike (because he was forced to change things up) and during the last week of The Tonight Show (because he didn't care what anyone thought anymore). if i could watch a show with that Conan hosting i'd tune in every night

Agreed that writers strike Conan was gold. The ring spinning bit, the zipline bit, the beard, it was all awesome. I watched Conan almost every day during the writers strike.

I think there are many reasons (Andy being the least of them):
TBS has given Conan a much smaller budget.
Conan can't attract the bands and guests at TBS like he could on NBC.
I think he is making a mistake not reviving his classic bits.
There is a lot of competition for late night audiences now.
Conan is not taking advantage of being on TBS in terms of being edgier than he could be on NBC.

My understanding is that he can't use them because the rights belong to NBC.

I am pretty sure that NBC said that they would not stop Conan from using his old characters and skits. I think him not using them is more about not wanting to accept any goodwill from NBC.

The big difference is that Letterman left NBC when his contract expired, whereas Conan had to negotiate his separation from NBC. That allowed NBC to put into writing what he could and couldn't do on a future show.
Also, Letterman's biggest bits that he took to CBS were Viewer Mail, the Top Ten list, and Stupid Human/Pet Tricks. His argument was that tv shows have been doing bits like that since the beginning of television, so NBC couldn't claim ownership on the basic ideas behind them.

I have begun skipping the monologue almost entirely now. I fast forward through it to see if he has anything going on, and then watch the part after the first commercial (unless it's the stupid fan correction bit), and then skip almost the rest of the show unless there is a guest I want to see. Very rarely are the comedians any good, and occasionally I'll be pleasantly surprised by the musical guest.

Every time I tune in to Conan (about once every couple weeks) I keep hoping it's going to feel like the old Late Night show, or even the Tonight show, where you didn't know from night to night what was going to happen, but you knew it was going to be awesome. But it's always the same audience interaction "hey, sometime we should do a whole show just of wooing", a so-so standup (never his strong side), and then some lame skit with the same tired actors. And without strong guests to keep me interested, I've found myself turning it off about fifteen minutes in. I really, really want him to be funny, but it's just not happening.

What's the deal with Conan not being on at 11 on CTV HD anymore? How long has this been the case? I've just assumed he has been on holidays when it wasn't showing up on my PVR.

Agree. Would like to know if it's because of the time and station he's on, or if it's him.
Unfortunately, and I've always been a big fan, I think it's him.
His running jokes go on way too long, wastes too much time, and doesn't shock or have the weird factor he used to.

He's always been on at 1 in Calgary, so I'm going to assume you're in Edmonton and CFRN finally started broadcasting in HD, so you don't get your CTV HD from Toronto anymore.
I have no idea if any of that is the case, but it seems likely. You'll probably have to reset all your recordings scheduled on CTV for your PVR to catch them.
