The Beantown Bruins are proud to select Center Joe Thornton

Joe Thornton was born in London, Ontario. Drafted 1st overall in the 1997 NHL Entry Draft by the Boston Bruins, Thornton played six seasons for the Bruins, with his best season coming in 2002-03 when he scored 101 points. During the 2004-05 NHL lockout, Thornton played for Hockey Club Davos with Rick Nash and won the Swiss ice hockey championship. During the 2006-2007 season, Joe Thornton recorded 90 assists for the second season in a row, joining Mario Lemieux and Wayne Gretzky as the only players in NHL history accomplish this. On November 30, 2005, Thornton was traded to the San Jose Sharks in a blockbuster deal, which sent forwards Marco Sturm and Wayne Primeau and defenseman Brad Stuart to Boston. Thornton was Boston's leading scorer at the time by a substantial margin and many felt that Bruins GM Mike O'Connell had dealt away one of the few players who was truly showing any effort. Bruins fans were upset, but San Jose fans were excited. Upon arriving in San Jose, Thornton immediately made an impact. With 14 points in his first 6 games, he found instant chemistry with winger Jonathan Cheechoo. With Thornton as his centreman, Cheechoo became a 50-goal scorer and won the Rocket Richard Trophy. Thornton himself would lead the NHL with 96 assists and win the Art Ross Trophy as leading NHL scorer. Thornton has collected several awards in his career alongside the Art Ross and Hart wins of 2006. He was an NHL All-Star in 2002, 2003 and 2004. Thornton also helped his team win the Spengler Cup in 2004, helped his team win the Swiss hockey league championship in 2005 and has been a continuous fixture on the NHL All-Star team. Thornton is probably best known for his play as a playmaker, setting up Jonathon Cheechoo for several goals and open shots. His size allows him to create lots of space and his uncanny ability to find open players with a soft pass and with great hands makes him an asset to any NHL team. Thornton instantly raises the levels of the players around him, like Crosby, and has a vicious streak that strikes fear into most opponents.

Nice pick for sure!

He was definitely on my radar... but with Crosby and Malkin still available, I couldn't justify going with Joe. I was toying with taking him as my #3 Center this round, but... you've made that decision a lot easier.

Right Wing #2

Selected by Calgary Flames round 8 #166 overall 1987 NHL Entry Draft

Games: 1084
Goals: 455
Assists: 633
Points: 1088
PIMs: 1840

That's a hell of a career.

I went to several pre-season games he was in before he "broke in" and he was all over the ice and by far the most exciting player in the game but the general consensus was still "yeah, he's great, but he's just too small". I guess he proved us wrong.

With the 146th pick in the CP All-Time Hockey Draft, StrayBullet selects, Mike Richter.

With our next pick we are please to welcome Flyer great:
Tim Kerr

Kerr was signed as an undrafted free agent by the Philadelphia Flyers. It proved to be a great move for Philadelphia, as Kerr scored 50 goals four times, and set the NHL single-season record for power-play goals in a season with 34 in the 1985–86 season. That season was particularly interesting in that in September 1985 he was hospitalized with aseptic meningitis.

Kerr was an almost unmovable presence in the slot during his prime. Hockey Hall of Famer Bryan Trottier once joked that the only way to stop Kerr was to wrap chains around his arms and legs. But Trottier retracted that statement almost immediately by saying that that still probably would not stop him.

However, Kerr's career was plagued with injuries, as he missed almost the complete 1982–83 and 1987–88 seasons. In the latter, he had five shoulder operations in a fourteen month period. Also in October 1990, his wife died at the age of 30 just ten days after the birth of their baby.

  • Named to the NHL Second All-Star Team (1987)
  • Awarded the Bill Masterton Trophy (1989)
  • Played in the NHL All-Star Game (1984, 1985, 1986)
  • Holds NHL single-season record for most power-play goals (34 in 1985–86)
  • Holds Philadelphia Flyers team record for most 50-goal seasons (4)
  • Shares NHL playoff record for most goals in a period (4 on April 13, 1985)
  • Holds NHL playoff record for most power-play goals in a period (3 on April 13, 1985)
  • In the top 100 in career NHL goals (stands 100th as of 2007–08 season)

great picks, Drunk. Lapointe was on my radar for sure. Too many times he's overlooked due to the great teammates (Robinson and Savard) he had.

Kerr took more punishment than I've ever seen in front of the net. I remember when his wife died due to complications from childbirth. I can't imagine how painful that must have been.

RW - Peter Bondra (Born February 7, 1968, in Lutsk, Ukrainian SSR, Soviet Union) is a former Slovak professional ice hockey player, who is currently the general manager of the Slovak national team.[1] Bondra became the 37th player in NHL history to score 500 NHL goals.

Peter was drafted by the Capitals in 1990, 156th overall, but before joining the team in 1990/91 season he played for hockey team TJ VSŽ Košice (now called HC Košice) for four seasons from 1986/87 in Czechoslovakia. In Washington, Bondra blossomed to become one of the more prolific goal-scorers of the 1990s, while trying to fulfil his dream of winning the Stanley Cup. His best chance to do so came in 1997–98, when the Capitals advanced to the Stanley Cup Finals before losing 0–4 to Detroit. In the 2004 season, Bondra's 14th with Washington, the Capitals endured a disappointing year and in a salary purge move traded veteran members of the team to contenders. Bondra was traded to the Ottawa Senators for Brooks Laich and a second round draft pick. At the press conference announcing this trade Bondra notably became choked up [2].

Over his career, he has been renowned for his exceptional skills. In 14 years with the Capitals, he has scored 472 goals and has racked up 353 assists in 961 games. He holds Capitals team records in goals (472), points (825), power-play goals (137), game-winning goals (73), short-handed goals (32) and hat tricks (19). With the Caps he appeared in five all-star games (1993, 1996, 1997, 1998, 1999). In 1997 and 1999 Bondra won the Fastest Skater Competition on All-Star weekend. In 2004, the Capitals held a vote for fans to determine the top 30 players in franchise history to celebrate their 30th season in the league. Bondra finished second with 2,018 votes. The winner, Olaf Kolzig, beat him by a mere 20 votes.

For his goal-scoring ability, he is nicknamed "Bonzai" and occasionally "The Slovakian Sniper". During the 1994-1995 (with 34 in a lockout-shortened season) and 1997-1998 seasons (with 52), he led the league in goals scored.

After the 2004-2005 NHL season was canceled due to the NHL labor dispute, Bondra played a handful of games with HK Tatravagónka ŠKP Poprad of the Slovak Extraliga. Prior to the 2005-2006 NHL season, Bondra was in talks to possibly rejoin the Capitals. He ended up signing with the Atlanta Thrashers.

On December 10, Bondra signed a one-year contract with the Chicago Blackhawks.

On December 22, 2006, he scored his 500th NHL career goal at the United Center, in Chicago's 3–1 victory against the Toronto Maple Leafs. Bondra drove to the net and netted the rebound of Jassen Cullimore's shot from the left point past Toronto's Jean-Sébastien Aubin, 6:37 into the third period on the power play. Peter Bondra became the 37th player in league history to reach the 500–goal mark. Bondra became the 4th player to record his 500th goal in a Chicago Blackhawks sweater joining Bobby Hull, Stan Mikita and Michel Goulet.

Bondra officially retired from the National Hockey League on October 29, 2007.

Really though, good pick. I never even thought of him and he scored more goals than Lanny.

Crap I was going to take Kerr with my last pick then I realized that Thornton was still on the table so I went with him gambling that Kerr would last for another few picks.
