Who cares about building a roster and trying to identify players that were undervalued on their previous rosters like the Panthers did with Bennett, Forsling, Verhaeghe, Reinhart, Mikkola, etc
Nobody needs those types of players, just trade for picks.
Sillinger turned 22 a month ago, and only has 107 points in 286 NHL games, don't you know he's useless.
(In seriousness though if Sillinger is the centerpiece of the deal then it's an issue, but if it's 14 + Sillinger or 14 + 2nd, then I'm taking Sillinger over the 2nd every day of the week).

My question is why do you like to settle on the middest of players.

It’s more that people are being realistic on trade returns. 14th and Sillinger would be a great return basis comparables. You can hope and dream they have a string trade that turns him into the 2OA and then get mad when it doesn’t happen.

Yeah, this fantasy of a 2OA return is ridiculous. No wonder some people are upset at Conroy's tenure if these are their expectations.

Like, what's the issue really. Most Andersson return packages include 1st round picks universally. That's what we want right? You're not going to get a Byfield and a 1st for Rasmus Andersson.
You're going to get Sillingers, Bystedts or maybe if you're lucky a Lundell with a lower round pick.
I don't know how Anderssons trade will look when it goes down but I think a 1st and a decent roster hopefully is about as high as it's gonna get.

When has a player #1 on trade boards returned a minimal return?
Now you have SuperMatt using Florida and players they took a chance o AFTER they had built up their top line core ans could identify areas to improve. Ridiculous stuff.
We seem to aim low all the time as fans.

I don't think 2nd OA is attainable, but 9th OA is. A guy at 9th OA is a great spot to be in

On a related note, Conroy has been a breath of fresh air IMO. Absolutely love him as our GM and his body of work in the role to-date. He's strategic, listens to the experts around him, super friendly guy whom the players like, and seems to understand this business really well. Fantastic rep for this organization.

Not a fan of Dallas's offerings for Andersson. I'm going to snoop around their depth chart and see if there's something I can convince myself would be good for the Flames.

Have to think Robertson would be on the block to even fit either one of those UFAs, no?

I thought of this one: Harley + Dumba for Andersson (50%), Miromanov, and 54th OA or Honzek.
Dallas is going to have to extend Harley OR Andersson. May as well be Andersson and get Dumba dumped.
Flames grab Harley who is easily playing top pairing with Weegar. Bahl and Dumba are middle pairing until Parekh takes over Dumba at the middle pairing RD spot (wouldn't take long).

Yeah no, there's no futures based deals to be had with Dallas. It'd be a hockey trade. And I only really want Wyatt Johnston from them. But they just signed him to a pretty hefty 8m a year deal.

It's more just your inability to look at things beyond picks.
You're probably not getting multiple 1sts for Andersson.
So the priority should be 1) Getting as high a pick in the 1st round as possible, and 2) Getting additional assets that could turn into higher value.
A piece like Sillinger who is only 22 years old, was a bit rushed into the NHL, but also then got a bit overshadowed by Fantilli and Johnson on the same roster, is a potential shrewd target similar to Bennett leaving Calgary.
Now if somebody in the top 10 offers their pick for Andersson then you'd take that, but overall you need to be trying to maximize total value.
I also think it's not super relevant when the Panthers brought in those guys, the point is you have to identify them and bring them in.
The point was you bring in talented players that you believe in, no matter where you are in your build cycle. If you think a player can have an impact and is undervalued then you'd be foolish to not bring him in because you don't think your roster is ready yet. Even if he doesn't stick with you long term, he potentially becomes an asset you can flip for more picks.
Panthers became the Panthers because they brought all those guys in smartly at different times over the past 10 years, it takes time to build a winner, and it's not just about picking top 3.

You're not going to be able to get Johnston from them. Harley is the next guy I think has some untapped potential being behind Heiskanen. I truly believe he has #1 potential considering how well he did with Heiskanen out. Dallas can extend Andersson and Robertson down the road.

SJ needs a RHS D so does Dallas. San Jose could end up with Ekblad and Robertson and Dallas Andersson(50%) with their cap issues.

I literally just said that. They just signed Wyatt, why would they move him. I'm saying that's about the only thing I would take for Andersson and since that's not happening there not a good deal in my mind with Dallas. Especially if you consider the increased value of. Retention.

The silver lining is Johnston having a terrible playoffs. But, so did everyone BUT Rantanen. So, it'll be interesting to see on what they do. It's very coach dependent.

Dallas needs cap relief. They wont trade guys on cheap contracts to fill holes. They also cant add much salary. They have 0 cap for Marner or Ekblad. Andersson at 50% retained fits in perfectly.
