I mentioned this in another thread, but we may need to pump the brakes on assuming this may be a hate crime. I'm not saying it definitively one way or the other, but Joss' substance abuse and mental health issues have been long documented and this statement is coming from the perspective of a grieving husband.

Joss has spiraled over the last number of years, particularly after a house fire destroyed his home and killed his pets. His husband claims it was arson, but Joss admitted previously (and evidently it was determined) that a grill was left on and caused the fire.

He was excluded from a recent KOTH revival panel, but showed up anyway and disrupted the event. Neighbors have a history of complaints with the couple, and it sounds like the feud with this particular neighbor ended fatally.

It feels like there is more to this story, but I could be completely wrong.

There may be, there may not be. This whole thing strikes me more of a Tiger King situation rather than a Matthew Shepard one. Maybe that contrast isn't really fair considering what Shepard suffered, but it's all that popped into my head.

It's an awful thing that happened that didn't need to happen and I hope the neighbor is held to account for a needless death. People are sure running with the husband's statement online, though.

Anecdotally in my social circles it's very bad for the LGBTQ community. There was lots of support and momentum before this right wing, Russian led misinformtatioon campaign attacked the community, in particular the trans community.

I'm just seeing that most people have either fallen for the misinformation and have stupid, ugly opinions on the community now or at BEST just don't care anymore because the discussion around any LGBTQ issues is completely toxic and politicized to a point where the people that hate the community have won.

Right now the only person charged with anything is the shooter, with 1st degree murder. Obviously we won't know with certainty what exactly happened but I'm not quick to dismiss the claims of the widow, even if Joss came across as a bit of a free spirit towards the end

The context of the ongoing issues in the neighborhood certainly suggests this is a lot muddier.

The circumstances leading up to the shooting remain unclear, but neighbor reactions and police reports suggest ongoing issues tied to the Joss home. Officers were called to the property more than 60 times in less than two years, according to San Antonio Police Department records.

According to a police report, an officer arrived at Joss’ home and called for him to come out. When Joss stepped out of the home, the officer said Joss remained naked except for a “window curtain” that “wrapped around his genitals.”

In the report, the officer wrote that Joss appeared to be nervous and confused. Joss told the officer that he had repeatedly heard the sounds of doors opening and closing or “a cough or moan” coming from Joss’ vehicle.

“I know someone is after me,” Joss told police. According to the report, he told the officer he believed the CIA was “tracking him.”

Alvarez also told police that Joss called him names, including “racial slurs.” Alvarez then showed the officer a video of Joss.

According to the second police report, the video showed Joss driving slowly inside his vehicle before he stopped in front of Alvarez’s home, which is a few doors down from his own, and tried to get Alvarez to come out of his house.

Alvarez said he filed multiple complaints detailing how Joss has previously harassed him and Alvarez’s brother, who lives next door, but lamented how nothing has been done, the report said.

According to Alvarez, every time police officers arrived and later left the area, Joss would resume harassing him. On at least one occasion, Joss told Alvarez that he is “coming for him,” police said.

Alvarez also told police he was afraid to leave his wife and kids at home because he alleged Joss was “known to follow them around the neighborhood.”

My social circle is mostly unchanged, on the supportive to very supportive side for LGBTQ. However one friend works in sales for oil & gas, and he's the far outlier. And whenever I've met other friends of his in the same field they all have the same ugly (and false) beliefs about the LGBTQ community. Seems like that industry is a magnet for ignorant and easily misled people

It's also fairly insular. The only other people they typically interact with are people with the same backwards ideas of the community as themselves.

When they're confronted on their ignorance and bigotry they have no idea what to do because all they ever face are confirmations and agreements.

In 2023 my city, Lake Worth Beach became Florida’s first sanctuary city for the LGBTQ+ community. So that’s one good thing about it lol.

The infamous Miss Cleo lived here with her partner for a while. There’s a documentary about it on Netflix or whatever streaming platform. We also have a lot of undocumented people here. A 7 minute drive from the Orange Cheetoh Taco idiot.
