Now college loopholes are a standard rite of passage and if your bridge deal isn't flattering (rarely were until recently unless you were a top 10 type player) you can just say you want to jet and get your short list too.

There was a time when an nhl team (any) drafting you then graduating you was an honour and players treated it as such.

Despite it all I still like the guy, which is why it's especially frustrating

It’s easy. If you can see fault with the Flames, or even just basically understand his situation, you can easily like him.

Flames are far from perfect. He has his own unique situation

No big deal.

Someone needs to make an application to court to have Brad Treliving’s name legally changed to Brad Trefleeced.

I no longer feel any sadness whatsoever for the departure of Treliving.

The teams treat the players like horsemeat, how many times have we seen players who wanted to spend the rest of their career on a team unceremoniously traded away for a 4th round pick and futures when they get slow and start to pick up injuries? the NHL, the teams, the owners has never shown any loyalty to its players so why the hell should the players view the teams any differently?

Tre wasn’t fleeced in that trade.

Could have traded Huberdeau and Weegar for picks, kept Monahan, and not signed Kadri. We’d have four firsts at minimum, be flush with cap space, and have only Markstrom as a questionable contract.

Matthew Tkachuk gave the Flames exactly what they were owed. Treliving had an opportunity to lock him down to a long term deal and failed to do so, instead giving him a contract that walked into to UFA status.

I don’t really get minimizing Bennett’s playoff performance by looking at points. Scoring goes down in the playoffs, and he scores more. He’s a physical presence and has a huge impact on the game. You win Stanley Cups with guys like that.

Does that make him a playoff “star”? Semantics I guess. Joel Otto was a playoff star for the cup winning Flames without putting up huge points.

exactly my thought.

Tkachuk made a move that was the best decision for himself and his career and so far it looks like he knew what he was doing. 3 wins from a cup final.

Bennett has been a beast yet again this playoffs. Half the Panthers' highlights are him destroying someone in the corner resulting in a goal in the chaos that ensues.

Happy for him, Tkachuk and even Lomberg who got robbed IMO last night. But man is this bittersweet.

Funny thing was, Tkachuk was completely missing for the whole game (looks hurt). But he did a Klima in OT.

But honestly folks, talk about that play all you want, but there’s a dozen threads about Treliving, Tkachuk, Bennett, their trades. Can’t this one be about the game and the series?

I made it to the beginning of the 4th OT before I passed out. Woke up this morning to the fantastic news. Legendary game and an elite finish by Chucky to end it. Carolina is so fantastic defensively and how they manage the game in all 3 zones. Just layer upon layer of support so if you get by one guy there are 2 others waiting to help out. It's going to be tough to score a lot in this series, especially with the way the goalies are playing too. Still, winning this one on Carolina's ice is no easy feat. It puts the Panthers up early, but I think this is going to be a long series.

1 down, 3 to go.

At what point was this possible?

I seem to recall that the only reason he was bridged was because signing him meant trading players away to create cap space. Matthew said in his presser that he did not want to have any of his team mates traded just so they could sign him to a bigger contract.

What was the failure here?

Don't blame Tkachuk. He saw where the team was heading and got out while he could. Why on earth would he want to stick around for the next 8 years playing meaningless hockey and living in -30? Treliving royally screwed up giving him a bridge deal. Then he further screwed up trying to "win now" instead of getting futures and cap flexibility. The team is handcuffed by bad contracts and any good young players like Lindholm or Hanifin are likely going to want to leave the first chance they get just like Tkachuk. This organizations lack of foresight is insane.

Puck hits the ref and seconds later ends up in the net for the GWG. Florida now 5-0 in OT in the playoffs.

Team of dynasty vibes are definitely strong.

Nope....it was a great stick by Bennett that stopped the puck though it looked like it hit the officials skate. They showed a definitive replay after the game.

Either way though, the release of that shot from the moment it was close enough to get one off was truly amazing....and from a bit of an awkward position at that. He is an elite player.
