If you are going to blame Treliving for the state of the franchise than you have to assign some of the blame to both Conroy and Pascal.
They are the two main assistants to the GM and would have the most say and influence on any decisions.
This is not old time sports. The GM might be making the final say but he is not making decisions in a vacuum without other peoples opinions. The decisions the Flames have made in the last half dozen years are group decisions.
If you don't like the decisions and the direction of the team than the Flames should not be making either Pascal or Conroy the GM. They should go outside for the new person and let them assemble a new staff.

Honestly, I worry about giving too much power to anyone who was previously an executive with Hockey Canada before their reckoning last year. Fair or not, I would have some reservations picking from that pool if the person was in charge of instilling a culture with the Flames.

I thought Conroy was a shoe-in for next GM. Didn't Burkie even confirm he was being groomed as the next guy?
The longer this goes on, the more I think Conny won't be the guy. Why haven't they given it to him yet? Plus, if I'm Conny, I'm probably pretty miffed they didn't promote him immediately.

Why? Because they will be accused of not doing a proper search.
This is normal for a lot of businesses to interview external candidates even if they favour an internal candidate for the position.

I finally got caught up on this all.
At the end of the day - this was the correct move. You can't hire a new GM and stick him with a Head Coach. Sticking a new GM with a bullet proof Head Coach would just be bad process - so I'm glad this has happened.
That said, my "best case scenario" was Sutter and Treliving returning together with plans to rebuild. Looks like I'm getting no Sutter, no Treliving, and no rebuild.
I sincerely hope we do not walk Lindholm to free agency...
I do hope that we end up with Love as our Head Coach.

What players? The roster has turned over completely since this last era has begun. So what players are masterminding this? Is it Mikael Backlund?

This franchise is a complete joke.

It was far from just Kadri and Huberdeau. Did you not see Lindholm and Backlund effectively say "nah, !@#$ this - I'm out"?

We just fired a real coach. Mitch Love looks like an excellent hire...I hope it ends up being him.

Might want to ask him about that video of Maurice absolutely LOSING IT on his guys on the bench and yelling red-faced at them....and not just for a moment, and certainly not happily.

Kind of related: does this mean the team will finally name a new captain? I understood the wait-and-see-if-Tkachuk-stays approach from last season, but there was no good reason not to give it Backlund or Tanev this season.

Wasn't Conroy also just in Switzerland doing some scouting?
If they were to name Conroy as GM, they would likely let him wrap up his other tasks that were already planned, and maybe let him take a vacation with his family or something before he becomes GM 24/7 with a huge workload ahead.
There just isn't a huge rush, especially if they are hiring from within the organization. I think if you were hiring from outside the organization, there would be more urgency to get it done sooner because you would want to get the new guy up to speed on everything. The transition for one of the Flames current AGMs would probably be a lot easier.
Of course, if they wanted to interview someone on a team still playing, they would need to wait, which isn't ideal if that team goes on a long run.

Not sure if Backs is an option if he's only got a year left and has indicated that he wants out.

May be if Conny is the next GM, he can talk Backs into staying?
