Tell me your thoughts on what Hanifin is getting? $7 mil? Really doubt it comes in at something starting with a 7
So, because Nurse is overpaid, Hanifin will be too?

I don't know what Hanifin will get, because it will depend entirely on how he plays over the next two years. Here is what I DO know: he makes $4.95M for those 2 years, and is tremendous value at that price. I also know he is young for a defenseman, so I think there is still lots of room for growth.

So how many point does the forward need to have (or project to) to make this worthwhile? 60? Probably not enough to make up for the positional difference. 70? Maybe! 80? Now we're talking!

But Noah Hanifin is also $5M AAV for the next two seasons, and while we have $2M in cap this year to absorb an increase, next year it gets tight again. So we need a guy who provides good cap value. So now we're looking for, approximately, a 70+ point RW who's signed for at least two years at ~5M AAV. Otherwise, Hanifin is the better asset.
AND, we need the team that holds him to be willing to trade him.

I have the same thoughts. I do think he would be a cheaper replacement for Hanifin and we could use Hanifin to get a first line RW

His next contract should be far less than Hanifin as well but he is a UFA a year earlier. IMO the Flames contract situation is much better next summer than when it's time to sign guys like Lindholm.

Yup a signed 60-70 point forward around the same age is exactly what they should be targetting if shopping Hanifin

Not sure why that is so far fetched if a team is weaker on D.

Or look for a younger D and forward , like the Hamilton deal .

Just Nurse? Pretty sure there was an article of worst 10 contracts in the league and Nurse, Werenski and Jones were on it? You don't think Hanifin will get close or the same as these guys? Even if he levels off in production he will be close to or above $9 mil

I'm not giving Hanifn away either, just looking at first line RW is all. It's not like I suggested players in the mid 30s and non first round picks as the return. Just a young first line center/RW like Barzal.

I want value for those 2 years at $4.95 mil but IMO the Flames are stronger at d than they are at forward so they could afford to move Hanfin for a top line forward

Can we get a Phil Kessel jihad rally thread going?

Let's will this thing into existence, just like with Kadri.

For me Kyllington is the odd man out, for a trade. Good player but doesn't kill penalties and gets pushed around in front of the net.

That why we have a GM.

But here's the scoring leaders by age.

https://www.quanthockey.com/nhl/seas...ers-stats.html

36 forwards 26 and under got over 60 points

Obviously they aren't all available (Or even most)

Another 21 players in the same age group between 50-60 points

That is the group of players they should be targeting if they decided to trade Hanifin. Identify a player you think will take that next step to star level like with Lindholm

Some names that have been floating around here. Again not sure if all are available:

Barzal
Robertson
Nylander
Pastrnak
Bratt
Necas - before he signed
Meier

I mean, we can list players under 25 that can put up points, but can we list any that are potentially getable?

Barzal - not a chance
Robertson
Nylander - not the right fit IMO
Pastrnak - not a chance in hell
Bratt - breakout season, pending UFA
Necas - before he signed - no chance now
Meier
I can't see any of these happening

There's zero chance that Pastrnak gets traded this year. I'd be shocked if Robertson was traded too.

This team needs a 50ish point top six winger that preferably shoots right, will come in probably around $2 million cap hit on a short term and is free to acquire so they don't have to subtract from elsewhere on the roster.

Hmmm. What to do, what to do.

What I would do...

1) sign Ruzicka, and run with the current team

2) try to move Valimaki, but waive him regardless

3) bank the remaining cap hit until game 50 or so

4) see what Dube and Pelletier are this year

5) at about game 50, we have about $5M in cap to go get whatever is deemed to be the missing piece

I'd rather see if Kylington has another level/gear in his progression. If he can polish his game along with the gifts he possesses then that's a player you want to hang on to.

Return would have to be really enticing because I can see Oliver thriving and us looking stupid if we did that.

More comfortable dealing Valimaki.

He sounds like a cool guy at the street level, but I wouldn't want him as a teammate now that his goal scoring has died off. I also wouldn't want that attitude rubbing off on young player just coming in to the NHL.
In fairness to Kessel, he did win 2 cups while on that contract, scoring at just under a ppg pace in those two years and arguably being deserving of the Conn Smythe in one of them. He's also the NHL's current iron man streak holder. The guy gas a history of showing up to play.

If the blues have a rough year, I'd look at trying to get Tarasenko. $7.5MM aav at the deadline would be quite doable.
