Yeah, three years ago he was coming off of 34 goals/82 points (in 78 games), he was 24 and on a sub $6.5M contract for 4 more years. Let's trade that guy.

I've always advocated for more complex conditional picks...but yikes.
First condition seems dumb and highly unlikely. Hopefully someone can flow chart the rest?

Flames fans:
“We need another top six forward!”
“We need Kadri!”
“We need to shed salary for either of those to happen”
*salary shredded, Kadri signed*
Also Flames Fans: “yeah but not like that”

The conditions on the first round pick might be easier to understand than fans like these. Embarassing.

Oh they're still tradeable...you just have to tack on another novel of conditions to them.

Easy to say in hindsight.
18-19: Bad playoff but his best season, tough to make the trade then
19-20: Injured in the offseason probably the time to make a move but you would have been selling low and he was a year removed from PPG and 34 goals.
20-21: This is when you should have just moved him for any return.
So really they waited one offseason too long likely and sounds like there were probably no takers last offseason either potentially.
Personally I would have rather they just let him play out this year and see if he bounces back at all and let him walk as UFA. Don’t like spending a 1st to get rid of one year.

What would make this better is if the Habs trade that FLA 1st someday lol

So if the pick gets deferred to 2026 and CGY's or FLA's first rounder in 2026 is first overall, Montreal gets that pick
Did I read that right?

This smacks of the a GM sitting there and saying "what if X" and the other saying "OK, then this". The Florida factor didn't help.

One thing for sure, I have no idea how the conditions on that pick work, but I look forward to it being misinterpreted on here over and over and over again for the next couple years lol

Yes. Of course one of the owners of the team decided to make a worse trade to save money.
Your comment is the joke.

There's a lot of negative value in making all of these future 1st round picks illiquid, if I understand how this works.

I have never wanted Kadri to sign here, and I am not happy about trading Monahan just so we could sign him.
I'll be glad to eat my words if Calgary even makes the conference finals. But I think Monahan will score more goals this year than Kadri, and we had to pay to get rid of him.
Also I think it's mostly twitter fanboys spamming how much they wanted Kadri, that got this done.

Yes, but I think that only happens if Flames pick 1OA in '25...don't even think they're own pick would be eligible to win again the next year (can't remember those rules)

Well this just confirms cap dumps are very expensive. Bar was set long before this deal, think of the Marleau deal.
Which I guess means back end of the Kadri and Huberdeau deals could be grim. Not much point fretting about that today.

If I read that correctly, and I have no idea if I did lol, I think the Florida pick can still be moved as long as the condition on it from florida's side of things is upheld.
In that scenario, Montreal would get Flames pick in 2025 regardless of where it is, as long as it's not 1st OV. If it is 1st OV MTL gets 2026 Flames pick and an additional 3rd. I think.
