Apparently the Coyotes have offered even more concessions that make this agreement a no lose for the City which is probably why the City of Tempe may go the route of a public vote. It's so good that it's almost a sure bet that it'll pass, even better than the previously announced proposal that still garnered 60% of the populace to approve.
But also, Coyotes... so it's going to fail

It seems weird...if it's such an obvious win most sensible politicians would simply want to vote yes and promote/exaggerate their role/support for the project.
There must be some skeletons [or perception of skeletons] in the closet for the councillors to abdicate their responsibility. Either way it's a bit of a failure (or more likely it's still a typical field of scheme)

Exactly what have the taxpayers been hit with? It is the owners - several iterations of them - that have lost their shirts.
As for putting this to a vote, brutal idea - basically turning it into a no-control coin toss. The only reason for them to do this is to rid themselves of any responsibility. Really weak leadership.

So city council wants citizens to vote on a no lose proposal? Why?
I’m guessing it’s not as no lose as you believe and sounds like the question is whether the Coyotes have the financing in place to support their promises.

Correct that the Tempe taxpayers haven't been hit with anything but the Glendale taxpayers were definitely raked over the coals for a number of years. First, paying for the building and then that agreement where they had to pick up the team's losses for 2-3 of the seasons before they smartened up. But now they have a mostly empty arena with no tenant that they still have to maintain and run.

Bruins play in Arizona Dec 9th. Marchand doesn't give a ####....he will say what he thinks.

Completely plausible it has great ice. Brand new ice equipment, super dry climate, and likely had NHL support during the initial freezing.

It's usually the other way around, bad deals get approved in darkness or by horrible/shady city councils.
I guess we will see this month what the deal really is.

I hope the citizens of Tempe vote this initiative down and put a final nail in the coffin of this sad sack franchise. Phoenix doesn't need another arena or performing arts center or anything else. Just move the Coyotes already. Houston awaits.

Hey look! it's the resident Phoenix expert!
It doesn't need one, no but unless the Suns get sold to a friendly new owner who would be willing to either buy the Coyotes outright or partner in making Footprint Center Hockey viable.. it is what it is. You have an ownership group who want that land, want to build an arena and open an entertainment district in that location that I believe will be highly successful because it is in the right location. Near Scottsdale, ASU, Tempe, Gilbert, Chandler, Phoenix itself and one exit from the airport so it will absolutely be a high tourism gain. The hockey team is just a small part of the equation.

I don't really understand the geographical or logistical issues in the Phoenix market. I gather from what people are saying is that Glendale is terrible and Tempe is awesome, but they both look like they are the same distance on the periphery from Phoenix proper on the map.
Using Vancouver as a reference for people who have been to both cities, is Glendale kind of like Surrey (no real entertainment district, garbage commercial area, and mostly suburbia and sprawl), while Tempe is more like Burnaby (a little more developed commercially and better infrastructure to move people)?
On the map, neither Glendale or Tempe look terribly far from Phoenix proper (nowhere as bad as Ottawa and Kanata for example), but I realize that maps can be deceiving.

That bolded part is all you need to know. This is really a real estate play which is what the citizens should be voting on. Is another entertainment district needed, or is that land better used to attract businesses that will generate good paying jobs and tax revenues? We need more high paying jobs, not more minimum wage jobs. For that reason I say vote the initiative down. We already have more than enough entertainment districts and venues for performances. It's exactly why ASU told the Coyotes to piss up a rope and wanted nothing to do with building an arena in partnership with them. The land is way more valuable in attracting major investment than to waste it in another entertainment district that is dead most of the time. Tempe can use that land to attract real businesses that bring people to Tempe to live, not just visit for a few hours on game days.

This is EXACTLY what is in the proposal and what the Meruelo Group want and why The City of Phoenix is using the housing as a reason to kill the arena so they don't have a competing venue, maybe put your 1" thick spectacles on and read for once..
here you go bud! It's all in there

It's an entertainment district. That's it. Performance venues, hotels, restaurants, and some condos. From your own website. Where's the businesses that are bringing in the high paying jobs? Tempe needs to use that land an continue what they did with the first phase of Tempe Town Lake which drew in State Farm, KPMG, Carvana, Honor Health, Silicon Valley Bank, and Amazon, to name a few. Another arena, hotel, and chain restaurants doesn't quite have the impact. They shouldn't be trying to appease a failed hockey team, they should be trying to establish an environment where business will flourish and tax revenues will continue to grow. Tempe needs the revenues.

Went through the entire site to see if anything differed from the proposal submitted to council on April 7th. Nothing has changed. Light on details and empty promises. Biggest takeaways that council has to consider and distill fact from fiction - $13+ billion in new spending or almost half a billion a year; 6,900 new full time jobs, but no indication of who the employer is or how those jobs are maintained; 1.5 million tons of trash cleaned up, meaning moved to another unidentified location - where is that?; a claim of generating $215M in new taxes over 30 years, or just over $7M a year. Lot's of big claims but not much concrete. All of this for a free parking garage? Just like the Coyotes, looks good until you actually look past the surface.
