Yeah. I don't think all-out war would happen based on that. If anything they would take him to Russia and stow him somewhere remote to waste away, and perhaps quietly dispose of him. Probably have an 'accident'.

I think you're underestimating how terribly close this is to a complete meltdown in Europe.
A move like the OP suggested by Russia to execute Zelenskyy or even some kind of psychotic maneuver from Lukashenko in Belarus that Putin doesn't endorse, could set off a chain of events that nobody can pull back from.

UK pushing hard to remove Russia from SWIFT, German's calling it drastic. When you watch your neighbour get invaded and you call cutting off banking services to the aggressor drastic? Like they can't even stomach taking a wallet hit.
Quote:
Western leaders are split on whether Russia should be ejected from the Swift international payments system, a move that would deliver a heavy blow to the country’s banks and its ability to trade beyond its borders.
Boris Johnson, the UK prime minister, on Thursday pushed “very hard” to remove Russia, according to officials, but he admitted to MPs that it was “vital that we have unity” on the issue among western allies.
Olaf Scholz, Germany’s chancellor, warned his country had reservations about such a dramatic move and so did the EU, according to officials close to sanctions negotiations. A German official declined to comment, saying only that “all options are still on the table”.
Dmytro Kuleba, Ukraine’s minister of foreign affairs, tweeted: “Everyone who now doubts whether Russia should be banned from Swift has to understand that the blood of innocent Ukrainian men, women and children will be on their hands too.”
Johnson has faced criticism in the UK for deploying what critics described as “peashooter” sanctions in response to the first stage of Russian aggression in Ukraine; he is now trying to push western colleagues to deploy very tough reprisals.
He pushed for international support for Russia to be cut out of the Swift system in a call with G7 leaders on Thursday. Officials briefed on the call said Canada had also been in favour.

it will eventually get done, this is just a stalling tactic. Don't underestimate how dependent our countries are on Russian gas, unfortunately ...

We read into NATOs word differently I suppose. If Russia doesn’t target a NATO member, no member will actively engage in military conflict. I can’t see one leader being the difference.
The situation is hairy as hell. But it doesn’t look like nato is going to get pulled into war by what happens in Ukraine, at least not the odd execution. Keep the energy flowing and response will continue to be rhetoric and financial.
‘Putin will pay...’. Yeah, you mean Russian citizens will live in misery while multi billionaires can’t purchase multimillion dollar yachts.
‘We stand with you’. Well, rhetorically. You’re actually standing alone staring down war planes.
‘A united front!’ A united front? From the bankers halls I guess.

No cutting off swift means Germany loses 40% of its energy supply, that will kill citizens and see its economy grind to a halt, I might not agree with the self serving nature of Germanies concern but Canada and the US need to step the #### up and promise a replacement for Russian gas if they want cooperation

Who are BNONews? Seems a little suss; there were news stories yesterday that reported that Zelenskyy had decreed that all reservists between the ages of 18 and 60 were being drafted. https://nationalpost.com/pmn/news-pm...esidents-order Sounds like this is the same story, but being reported differently...

Yea I get that they can't cold turkey overnight and are still going to be lining up to buy Russian gas transiting through Ukraine tomorrow. German's had 8 years to prepare for this day and didn't just do nothing, they made themselves more reliant on Russian gas in that time. Its stupid to just call it a drastic measure.

we had a decade to put an LNG plant into the East Coast and we haven't, that leaves Germany with little choice really

Alex Ovechkin to discuss Russia’s attack on Ukraine in the near future

Fearing crypto and China, the US hesitates to pull Russia’s SWIFT access
|
Quote:
Yet for all the aggressive posturing, the U.S. coalition has seemingly backtracked on SWIFT, deciding not to block Russian access to the international payments communication system. Pundits have come to refer to SWIFT sanctions as “the nuclear option.” But some policy experts say this characterization is wildly overstated, arguing instead that SWIFT sanctions wouldn’t be nearly as effective as those directly targeting Russian banks.
|
Quote:
So why are sanctions against Russian banks still on the table, while cutting off SWIFT access has been deemed a step too far? There’s a simple answer: Removing Russian access would constitute an economic shock that U.S. politicians and corporations would rather not instigate.
|
Quote:
There’s a more complicated and consequential explanation, however, that has to do with anxiety over the U.S. dollar’s status as global reserve currency. SWIFT sanctions, rather than being a “nuclear option” thwarting Russia, could be the first domino in a sequence of events that bolster China- and Russia-backed alternative digital payment systems.

East or West coast wouldn't matter tremendously beyond a few extra days of transit but we can't do either can we?

He didn't seem to mind endorsing Putin, now he needs to shut up? That makes him a coward.
