SPECIAL TEAMS LEAD HEAT TO 3-1 WIN OVER ABBOTSFORD

The Canucks drew first blood with Guillaume Brisebois lighting the lamp 1:46 into the opening frame, but Jakob Pelletier scored with Stockton down a skater to even the game at a goal apiece through one period.
A hard-fought battle saw one goal scored in the second, Luke Philp tapping home a puck on the power play from a Martin Pospisil feed to give the Heat the edge at the 5:23 mark of the frame. The home team never relinquished the advantage, keeping the Canucks off the board and Justin Kirkland adding an empty-netter for the 3-1 win.

NOTABLE
  • Jakob Pelletier’s shorthanded goal in the first period gave him the lead in Stockton’s goal-scoring race for the season (26) and tied him for the Heat team lead in SHG (2). His two shorthanded markers have come in Stockton’s last three games.
  • With his 19th goal of the season, Luke Philp has matched his career high, set in 2019-20, also in 52 games. He has five more points this year than in his rookie season, all assists. Philp now has nine multi-point games on the year.
  • Juuso Valimaki has assists in three consecutive games.
SPECIAL TEAMS
STK PP – 1-for-2
STK PK – 3-for-3
THREE STARS
First – Luke Philp (1g,1a)
Second – Jakob Pelletier (1g)
Third – Dustin Wolf (26 svs)
GOALIES
W – Dustin Wolf (26 saves on 27 shots faced)
L – Michael DiPietro (32 saves on 34 shots faced)

For those who might be like me and looking at those standings and wondering how the Heat and Reign have already clinched playoff spots when 5th place Abbotsford could still catch them, it's because the AHL has expanded the playoffs this year to include a best-of-3 play-in round prior to the traditional 16 team playoffs.

What this means is only two teams in each Division will be eliminated at the end of the regular season. Because the Pacific has 9 teams this year, that means 7 teams will qualify for the playoffs. The top team in the Division will get a bye to the second round and the 2-7 teams will play the best-of-3s.

So, while it's great to clinch this early, it's not quite as incredible as it might originally sound.

HEAT TIE TEAM RECORD WITH 18TH ROAD WIN OF THE SEASON

The Stockton Heat (39-11-4-1) matched the club’s all-time record for road wins in a season with their 18th away victory of the campaign, a 7-5 decision over the San Diego Gulls (26-26-2-1) Sunday at Pechanga Arena. Four Stockton skaters earned multi-point efforts on the night, including Luke Philp with two goals, Emilio Pettersen and Connor Zary with a goal and an assist each and Justin Kirkland with a pair of helpers. With an assist as his 58th point of the campaign, Matthew Phillips took sole possession of Stockton’s single-season scoring record.

NOTABLE
  • Andy Welinski returned from injury into the Heat lineup, his first game since January 4. He scored his third goal of the season in the win.
  • Matthew Phillips took sole possession of Stockton’s single-season scoring record with his 58th point of the year, an assist on Connor Zary’s goal.
  • Luke Philp netted his career-best 20th and 21st goals of the season in the game. It was his third multi-goal game of the season.
  • Emilio Pettersen notched his fourth multi-point game of the season. Connor Zary tallied his fifth such game of the year and Justin Kirkland claimed his seventh.
  • Stockton scored its AHL-leading 13th shorthanded goal of the season, the third against San Diego. The goal from Glenn Gawdin was his first since January 15.
  • Stockton is now 10-0-1-0 on the year when scoring shorthanded.
  • The Heat clinched the season series with San Diego with five wins in seven games. The teams have one meeting remaining.
SPECIAL TEAMS
STK PP – 0-for-4
STK PK – 5-for-7
THREE STARS
First – Lucas Elvenes (1g,2a)
Second – Alex Limoges (2g)
Third – Emilio Pettersen (1g,1a)

5 THINGS, HEAT at SD, 3.27.22

THIS… It’s hard to find recent comparisons for the rookie season Dustin Wolf has put together, but the netminder reached another impressive milestone with Friday’s win. How common is it to see an AHL goalie reach 29 wins in a season? Six goalies have pulled that feat since the 2016-17 AHL campaign. Among rookies? The last time a first-year netminder reached one shy of 30 was in 2015-16, when Juuse Saros went 29-8-0. THAT… The special teams battle has been one the Heat have relied on for team success for most of the season, including on Friday with Stockton earning the win after scoring on the power play and penalty kill. Stockton has outscored San Diego on the power play 5-3, with the Gulls seeing 35 opportunities on the man-advantage and the Heat getting 27. Stockton has also scored a pair of shorthanded markers, each coming from Connor Mackey. The Heat are 15-0-2-0 on the year when scoring a power play goal. THE OTHER… The saying goes ‘history repeats itself,’ and for Luke Philp consistency has been key. The ‘Swiss Army Knife,’ do-it-all forward has tied his career high in goals for a season with 19, set in 52 games played. Those numbers are identical to his rookie season in 2019-20. Philp is tied for Stockton’s team lead in shorthanded points (2g, 2a), has four power play goals, is fifth on the team with nine multi-point games and leads the Heat with a plus-19 rating.

NHL All-Star Saros is another sub-6' goalie... This bodes well for Wolf! Cautiously optimistic though (as Flames fans have learned for decades when it comes to goalie prospects)...

HEAT CLIPPED BY EAGLES WEDNESDAY, 2-1

The Heat scored first, Kirkland’s power play marker at 18:05 of the first breaking the ice with assists from Andy Welinski and Matthew Phillips.
Colorado bounced back early in the second, Callahan Burke finding the back of the net out of a net-front scramble to even the score, and the visitors then jumped ahead in the third as Dylan Sikura netted what proved to the game-winner at 2:34 of the final frame.

NOTABLE
  • Justin Kirkland’s goal was the 50th of his AHL career.
  • Andy Welinski notched a point for the second consecutive game after returning to Stockton’s lineup Sunday. He now has a goal and an assist since return from injury.
  • The game was Stockton’s third loss of the year when conceding fewer than three goals.

THREE STARS
First – Dylan Sikura (1g)

While the big club struggles, the Heat keep rolling!

HEAT BLOW PAST BARRACUDA, 7-1

Behind two-goal efforts from Eetu Tuulola and Matthew Phillips, the Stockton Heat (40-12-4-1) overcame an early deficit by rattling off seven unanswered goals in a 7-1 victory over the visiting San Jose Barracuda (20-35-2-2) Saturday.

Jakob Pelletier pulled into a tie for Stockton’s all-time rookie scoring record with his 56th point of the season while Phillips matched the Heat high-mark for single-season goal scoring with his 26th and 27th markers of the campaign. With the win, Dustin Wolf became the fifth AHL goalie since 2000-01 to reach 30 victories in his rookie season.

NOTABLE

Tyrell Goulbourne made his Heat debut and earned his first point with Stockton, an assist.
Connor Zary’s power play goal in the first was his 10th marker of the season. He’s the ninth Heat skater to double-digit goals on the year, the second rookie on the club.
Eetu Tuulola’s shorthanded goal was his second of the year, pulling him into a six-way tie for the team lead. It was Stockton’s AHL-best 14th SHG of the season. He notched his first two-goal game of his career.
Matthew Phillips became the first player on the Flames’ AHL club to reach 60 points in a season since Max Reinhart (63) and Ben Street (60) of the Abbotsford Heat in 2013-14. He has tied the team record for goals in a season (27) alongside Mark Jankowski (2016-17), Hunter Shinkaruk (2015-16) and Derek Grant (2015-16).

SPECIAL TEAMS

STK PP – 1-for-2
STK PK – 1-for-1

THREE STARS

First – Eetu Tuulola (2g)
Second – Matthew Phillips (2g)
Third – Justin Kirkland (2a)

GOALIES

W – Dustin Wolf (24 saves on 25 shots faced)
L – Zachary Sawchenko (12 saves on 14 shots faced)
ND – Alex Stalock (22 saves on 27 shots faced)

Sort of a legit question - if the Flames are out early and the Heat are doing well.. can someone like Sutter go and help out the coaching staff as an advisor?

In other words, can your NHL coach go help the minor league team?

I would think that Sutter has regular meetings with the AHL coaching staff to ensure that systems mesh. I dont think youd ever see an NHL coach barging in on another team, regardless of affilaition, that would be rather uncouth.

AHL is a development league for prospective NHL coaches as much as it is for players IMO. So yeah agree with Cheese.

Wouldn't be surprised to see a coaching staff consisting of Ryan Huska/Mitch Love for the flames a couple years down the line.

Heat win 3-1. Wolf with another win.

Somewhat surprisingly for a guy threatening to win his league’s equivalent of the Vezina, Wolf still has not recorded a shutout through 41 GP.

He’s 2nd in sv% and 3rd in GAA. Former 1st NHL game wonder Troy Grosenick leads both categories, but has played only 3/4 as many games.

Would really love to see Wolf finish out the season strong and then continue for a deep playoff run.

Stockton stifles san jose in season series finale

Byron Froese and Connor Zary scored in a six-second span in the second period, the Heat penalty kill turned in a 6-for-7 effort and Dustin Wolf turned away 27 of 28 shots faced as the Stockton Heat (41-12-4-1) closed the season series against the San Jose Barracuda (20-36-2-2) with a 3-1 win Sunday at the SAP Center.

NOTABLE

The six seconds between scores was the shortest amount of time between goals for the Heat this season, besting the previous 11-second span also against San Jose on March 12.
Connor Zary has six goals in the last eight games and has found the back of the net in consecutive contests for the second time this season.
Dustin Wolf finishes the season series against San Jose with a record of 8-0-0-0, 1.50 GAA and .957 SVP.

SPECIAL TEAMS

STK PP – 1-for-4
STK PK – 6-for-7

THREE STARS

First – Dustin Wolf (27 svs)
Second – Connor Zary (1g)
Third – Alex Stalock (25 svs)

GOALIES

W – Dustin Wolf (27 saves on 28 shots faced)
L – Alex Stalock (25 saves on 27 shots faced)
