Does he though? I beg to differ.

Yeah, Gio might have decent value if he was a rental. But with one more year at 6.75, I don’t see it. Which contending team can fit a #4-5 d-man making 6.75 into their salary structure next season?
At this point he’s expansion fodder. Seattle will need to get to the cap floor and won’t have a problem absorbing that salary for one season of a veteran character guy.

His contract is prohibitive to acquiring any meaningful assets. Any trade involving Gio will require the Flames taking an overpaid player back and that doesn't help the Flames. The most logical landing spot for him would be the Kraken in the expansion draft as they will have no problems taking a season of his contract in hopes he can be like Engelland was for the Knights.

It could also involve eating salary, which I suppose, for a single season, wouldn’t be that bad if the return was decent.

Lol Gio is much better than Engelland. I understand the team is doing badly but I think Gio is still viewed as a top pairing defenseman around the league, not a veteran character guy

If a team has really bad pro scouts maybe a team or two would still view him as a top pairing defenseman but I'm pretty sure most teams would be looking at him as 2nd/3rd pairing at the most. Anderson was an ascending player until he got paired with Gio.

You know NHL teams have pro scouts who watch other teams play, right?

I think most people would have agreed with you until the last calendar year or so.
He's now accumulating a sizeable body of work with lower standard play and I seriously doubt anyone sees him as a top paring D.
If Calgary fans see it, then every team sees it.

Calgary fans think every player is worthless right now though...there are certainly worse dmen playing on the NHL right now. Gio would upgrade many playoff teams...the money could be an issue though. Seattle taking him might be the best outcome.
Flames really should clear some cap space, could be some really good deals out there before the expansion draft.

Not exactly sure why you felt the need to post this as nobody is saying he's worthless as a player and nobody said he was the worst dman in the NHL. We are all saying his contract is prohibitive to the Flames getting young assets or picks in return which you seem to agree with.

There’s quite a few who aren’t far off from saying those things.
I actually think Gio has gotten markedly better as the season has gone on. He made one huge error last game. But overall his play was pretty darn good. Better than his partner, who has no aging excuse.

I think Gio's mistakes are magnified because the team can't score. He is playing a ton and the Flames don't allow much at all. Some people act like he is being burned constantly.
And somebody said he is worse than Todd Simpson so there's that

Me being the loser I am still wasting the prime of my life cheering for the most middling franchise in the NHL
The worst part about this team is not only do we suck, we don’t really have a future to be excited about, couple ok prospects but mostly empty cabinets. The young players we’d want to keep are not first liners. I’m jealous of Buffalo, at least they have Eichel. I’m not even sure its debatable, we are the worst franchise in the NHL.

If this was my outlook I would walk away as a fan. I know things are tough but really if there is no positive outlook for the future why bother?

Hanifin has been scoring of late, but he doesn't seem to have a shot at all. I like him, and he is playing solid, but offensively he isn't as good as Giordano is. Defensively he has been better.
Tanev is the best defensive defencemen on the team. Solid as they come, and I have come to love him. However, not much offence.
Won't comment on anyone else as they are obviously worse at the moment, but promising given their ages and skill-sets.
Giordano - for better or worse - is still this team's best all-around defencemen you can utilize in any situation. I miss Brodie a LOT, especially since he was solid defensively and really helped this team transition quickly (as well as being exceptional at evading forechecking pressure).
I think that's the problem with the defence right now. Giordano (and I love him) is your best defencemen.
|
Hanifin is better offensively when it comes to transitioning and carrying the puck up ice. Gio is tons better in the offensive zone - I don’t know why.
Rasmus is just not able to make up the ground when Gio gets stuffed, which is happening more often. And Rasmus has a lot of bad pinches himself.

This team has no confidence and I think that's a big issue right now. I actually don't think it's necessarily effort.
To me they've tried Hard under Sutter, but just haven't really had any puck luck and just lacking confidence offensively.
No confidence to take a risk or make a play that could lead in a good chance.
Looking at the last 10 games which aligns with Ward being fired.
4-5-1 for 9 points - which is bad. But the underlying numbers are okay.
Defensively they have been really strong. In that time we are 7th in the league and 2nd in the division at 1.99 xGA/60 at 5v5.
They are struggling to create offense at 2.26 xGF/60, which ranks 13th. Which actually isn't that bad. Real issue there is they aren't getting into the high danger areas, and that's been the issue going back to the start of the 19-20 season. They generate 9 high danger chances per 60 at 5v5, which ranks 23rd.
Biggest issue has been the percentages lately:
Shooting Percentage: 7.20% (26th)
Save Percentage: .887 (28th)
Can't get a save, and can't buy a goal. The fact they are 4-5-1 considering they sit 26th and 28th in those two stats respectively over their last 10 games is pretty lucky in itself.
