Sportsnet is selling the stars, they're trying to make it like the NBA. McDavid and Matthews. I mean they treated the Oilers and Leafs playing the last couple of weeks like the Stanley Cup Final.

One other point coming out of last game. McDavid's drives to the net are the equivalent of a football receiver stretching himself out to try to grab a ball while running thru the middle, with a safety just ready to explode thru him.
It's a dangerous play, player beware.
If McDavid wants to drive to the net at that speed, he should expect to be taken down, and it's going to be extremely dangerous for him. He was right to be upset yesterday, only because the call probably should have been 2 mins tripping on Tanev.
That being said, if Giordano face washed or roughed up the player that drive the net resulting in his goalie getting smoked, maybe it helps to deter McDavid to try that again.
The concept of physicality and intimidation is done in the NHL. It's a shame. It was the one thing that set hockey apart from all other pro team sports.

Removing Bennett from Backlund's line tonight was absolutely Addition by Subtraction.
John and Sean basically are useless at 5on5 so its only right to saddle them with the only other useless 5 on 5 player we have in Bennett.
Last night was the return of our true best player, Backlund. Here's hoping he can continue the trend forward.
I thought Gio had a howler of a game. Unreal how far he has fallen. I think they should look at dropping him to the third pairing with Nesterov and bring Valimaki up with Andersson (and give them 2nd pairing minutes) leaving Hanifin and Tanev as your TOP pairing.
I also don't think Gio should see any more PP time at all, start the transition to Hanifin.
I think Ward needs to think outside the box when it comes to John at least. Sean is useless unless he is on the rush on on the PP. He is a liability everywhere else on the ice...much the same with Bennett.
I think you try to double shift Johnny more. I think that would help him at 5 on 5 get more looks.

My biggest issue with her commentary is that it’s shown zero signs of maturing or improvement over the course of many years in the booth now. She’s just so monotone, and adds no insight or value to the broadcast. Everyone is a little nervous, awkward and whatever when they start, but they grow into the job. She just doesn’t seem to have the skill set to be a competent in-game analyst.
Keep her on the panel for sure, and absolutely keep working on expanding the roles of women and people of colour in the hockey world, but surely there must be another female sportscaster who, through experience would grow into a solid analyst.
It’s just not Cassie. It’s not a question of her knowledge, it’s almost all personality, and she doesn’t have the type required for the job.

I got no problem with a penality call against tanev on the play...but if you are going to drive that reckless towards the net at that speed, trying to embarrass defenders, be prepared for injuries...frankly if he injures our goaltender I would be livid with the guy, IMO

Great, thank you? But you have chosen the oddest place to say that. It's a hockey forum where we discuss hockey, not posters.
And to bring it on topic, yes I do have an issue with Monahan. IMO he is a big reason why this team can't compete in the playoffs. Slow, soft and disengaged.
That's my take on the guy. Last night he and the rest of the top line were invisible until the 3rd period.

Just for the record here, we can disagree on the negativity of the forum, but I have, as far as I know, no ability to change that feature.

Big win, really needed that.
McDavid was dangerous, but I thoughts they did well defending him. Also draisaitl was really held back. This is the problem with the Oilers and why McDavid will not be able to will them into the playoffs. Their goaltending situation is dire and trying to ride two players every game is a tall task. Those 2 are probably on pace to play 80 games worth of games for the typical forward.
Markstrom and Tanev have been great additions and have done wonders so far. Forwards are starting to settle in and I think we are on the verge of going streaking.
Regarding the commentary last night, I don't know a lot of the magic of television, but I wonder how much of the McJesus angle is a fabrication of the producer and the network. I also wouldn't put it above the Oilers organization to make sure his tires are pumped.

Seeing a 200lb body flying towards you at 57kph must have an effect on a goalie. No way Markstrom isn't at least a little concerned about McDavid running in to him by accident. More so now that it actually has happened.
But how do you stop that within the rules? These kinds of plays were a concern when they removed the 2 line pass rule. Too much speed.
Back in the day, he'd be flattened a few times and would probably learn. Now you can't touch a guy without everyone screaming about predatory hits.

Hilarious ATL as usual. I particularly enjoyed the prediction that Chucky would run Koskinen (then McDavid does it), or that Johnny is a cherry picker (not like McDavid at all).

I'd agree with you that Cassie lacks natural talent for the colour role, but I'd say she's improved a lot over the years. She's still not my favourite, but she used to struggle much more than she does now IMO, to the point it used to be a real distraction from the game. They really tried to pound a square peg into a round hole when they first hired her, and it's taken a while for her to build up her skill level and comfort. Now I'll notice the odd Cassie-ism throughout the game, but it doesn't bug me nearly as much.
It's kind of a funny business really: the skills needed to be a good commentator are totally different from those developed actually playing the game. A knowledgeable fan with a good voice and passionate delivery would be better than a former player who lacks natural speaking abilities.
You'd think there'd be a bunch of people better suited to the job of actually commentating, even if they lack hockey chops. Especially since most hockey players have the personality of a two-day old scone.

McDavid is going to have to do a Tiger Woods and adjust his game a bit to prolong his career. He’s had multiple injuries flying around the outside (smashed knee, broken collarbone...). He can’t continue to take those high impact plays, while also playing 57 minutes a night for 10 more years.

The Gaudreau goal was awesome though by Monahan. If you watch the replay the ability to knock down the puck in mid air and then convert a leading pass to Gaudreau was actually very impressive especially considering the speed with which he did all of that.
There are times like that where Monahan has a wow factor. His release on his stick- is elite level in the NHL. That’s why I’m the slot the millisecond he gets to shoot when Gaudreau feeds him is so important because his release is so quick.
Flames beating the Oil never gets old. Looked good especially in the 3rd.

i’m usually someone who doesn’t care who the announcers are — so long as I can enjoy watching a game and not notice it (good or bad), they’ve done their job. The problem I had with Cassie yesterday was the constant doting on McDavid was not enlightening or entertaining. “McDAVID IS UNSTOPPABLE” is something a 12 year old would say to his buddies. I’m pretty sure everyone tuning in knows McDavid is good, but thanks for that “expert” analysis.
As for Harnarayan, I thought he was okay, better than I expected actually. He might not be at the level of Ball or some of the other vets, but with time I hope he gets there.

Maybe Cassie feels a bit intimidated in a role dominated by men so she offers strong opinions in hopes to amplify her knowledge? Strong opinions are always polarizing, no matter what topic.
Probably a stretch.
She was annoying last night, as were the other guys. The McDavid shouldn't be touched when beating you wide was something else. Unreal really.
