So even for a rental you have to move $6M in salary. You have to move, say, Frolik, Jankowski and a kid. Or Frolik and Bennett. Or Hamonic instead of Frolik. And to make it palatable for NJ the kid you add has to be good (Valimaki) or you add nice picks.

Bennett, and Kylington gives then two young players that are already NHL players right now. They are both the type of players you likely are drafting with a 20-30 overall first rounder but are actually ready to play now instead of waiting 3-4 years.
IMO It's a great start to an offer for rental Hall.
|
I think it is far too rich for a rental Hall. Flames can’t afford to give up young talent for a 45 game rental. The prospect pool is too weak and this team has not been able to prove they can go deep in the playoffs. If those pieces are moved it needs to be for a player that will be here longer term

I been on the fence with the thoughts of acquiring Hall. I just don't know where he is right now on the spectrum from Hart winner to that screen cap of NHL 94 where he is in the offensive end when the other team is celebrating. Sometimes I get a Jokinen vibe from him, more the situation than the player. I just don't know.

Bennett +kylington is a great offer

I was responding to the one including Czarnik and Frolik, and having fun with the trade proposal where a fan picks players to whom they are itching to say goodbye, just so the numbers work.
I actually like Fro too. He is a consummate pro and puts up .5 points per game like clockwork. Not sure why Peters hated him. Probably because he stares at his skates for 20 minutes before each game.
Edit: I think I read your post too quickly

If Bennett and Kylington get you Taylor Hall for 40 plus games the trade would be done by now.

They wouldn’t need 6 mil in space. I believe the cap hit is prorated based on how many days remain in the season. I’m sure someone knows this in greater detail than me.
On today’s Spittin Chiclets RA mentions again that his source thinks Calgary is the front runner. Also says he could see a random team that we haven’t heard about getting him.

Bennett and Kylington is a good offer. I don’t think I would extend it right now.

You have to dump more salary than Bennett and Kylington to take on Hall's $6M. That trade leaves you $4M over. Frolik or Hamonic have to be involved, or you have to trade them elsewhere to make room.

I think most of the trade proposals suggested to land Hall have been really bad in favour of the Flames, but I agree, those suggested trades will be a lot closer than the Flames giving up Tkachuk.

Sure, the $6M is prorated, but so is the $82M cap, and so are the salaries you are sending the other way. Therefore you can just use the $6M number for ease of reference (and you can use the other players' 100% salaries as well).

I read that post too quickly.
If NJ will take Hamonic as a centrepiece for Hall, off he goes

I think you are wrong. The Flames are currently a wildcard team and the playoffs are far from a lock. Giving up young assets for a short term move when not even the playoffs are guaranteed would be too risky imo.
Doubt those pieces are on the table without a long term contract being signed which appears to be a non-starter for the Hall camp.

I don't think he's the centrepiece. I think the young player or pick they get will be. You might have to move Hamonic or Frolik separately. In fact, given you could potentially get a second rounder for one of them, you'd probably do that. The issue is making the latter happen now in order to do a Hall deal now.
So, eg: Bennett/Kylington to NJ for Hall; Hamonic to a defence light team for a pick.
Of course next year you may have nothing to show for all of this.

To add;
If you trade 3 roster players for 1 (Example Hamonic, Kylington and Bennett), they have to be replaced by other players and their salary needs to be taken into consideration as well.

That’s not taking into account accrued cap space though.
For example cap calculations are ran daily. If a team is $500,000 under the cap every day for half the season then they can add a 1 million dollar player without sacrificing anyone from their roster.
Regardless I’m sure NJ would be willing to retain some money for half a season if Calgary was offering the assets that they liked the best.

Wait you think if NJD asked for Bennett and Kylington, that Tre would hang up?

NJ could retain on hall's remaining cap hit for the year to make it work if they dont want to take on a cap dump in the trade. Don't see why they wouldn't do that to make it work. They have space and aren't going to be needing it for the rest of the year.

True, though those guys are replaced by Hall plus a couple guys that total about $1.5M like Reider and Davidson.

These are also true. But Calgary is, right now, if I read CapFriendly right, will have $3M or so at the deadline on that basis (though I can't understand how that works with the projected hit of $82.6M). The money still doesn't work without a heftier salary gone, or retention. I don't think Bennett/Kylington are worth a retained salary Hall to the Devils. They will have better offers.

Do you really think this group misses the playoffs if they add Taylor Hall and subtract Bennett/Kylington/Valimaki/cap dump?
Tre has to realize he screwed up not trading Valimaki for Stone when he had the chance. I don't care how good you project Valimaki to be, you trade him for a modern day Marian Hossa.
This is the year to go all in - you don't know when Gio will begin his decline, you don't know if you'll be able to retain Gaudreau (or want to), you don't know who you're going to lose in expansion.
They have a goalie. They have a very good defense, top to bottom. If they can't get a Ryan Kesler #2C, the next best thing is a former MVP with the explosiveness to back off the opposing D a bit.
Now is the time.

You could also throw in some conditions associated with making the POs, and rounds won. Also, of course, on a re-signing.
