Mike Smith just makes too much sense, unless you believe that there is a long-term, sure thing solution available (Schneider), and that Treliving would be willing to pay the assets to acquire that goaltender. It's possible that Raanta or Grubauer are ready to be starting goaltenders, but I don't believe Treliving would be willing to gamble next season on either of them taking that next step.

We should know by now that you simply can't count on young goalies emerging, nor should you hinge your success on that.
|
On the other hand I can't remember us ever having 3 as promising goalies as these 3. We've had 1 or maybe 2 goalies with promising futures at a time but not 3. We don't even have room for them in the AHL so I'd be looking at an old starter who we can acquire for little or nothing.

The Coyotes better retain salary for the Flames to take on a 35 year old goalies 2 years at north of $5M
The Red Wings are in cap trouble so they may entice a team to take Jimmy Howard off their hands? Similar contract to Smith 33 years old decent numbers but injury plagued last year.

The Yotes have a fever, and the only prescription is more Troy Brouwer.

The real chances are that none of these end up being a starter (or even as backup journeymen) as most goalie prospects just never make it, even when having incredibly promising junior and even AHL stats.
I do think Parsons is as good or better than any other goalie prospect coming out of the CHL in the last 5 or 10 years, I do think that Gillies is good enough right now that he can be a backup in the NHL, and Rittich is really a wildcard for me and I would have liked to have seen him in a string of games at least last season to make up my mind about him.
However, the smart thing to do is what I know the Flames will end up doing - acquire two goalies with NHL experience to function as the starter and backup. You don't risk a season by throwing out anyone out there and 'hope' they translate their abilities.
If one of these goalies makes it, it will be because they pushed out whomever was ahead of them with much better and much more consistent play. Whether that be through the training camp/preseason/early season chances, or through solid AHL starts followed by a stretch as an injury call-up, that's fine. They have to take the net, you can never just give it to them, so the Flames would be incredibly foolish to just give them the net. There is no way it will happen in my opinion, no matter how high they are on a particular goalie prospect. That goalie still needs time to prove themselves in the NHL, and that means they make the most of any opportunity they will eventually be given.
What I do think is that given the Flames likelihood of finding a new starter, they will probably end up giving the starter (and the new backup) more time in training camp and preseason to adjust to the Flames, limiting the chances of a prospect. That's an ok trade-off though - you don't want to risk a season on what ifs, and you need to get your goalies comfortable on the team before the start of the season.

I think you are going to be disappointed.
If the Flames go tandem again I suspect they will acquire one of the backups that could be ready to be a starter (Grubauer, Raanta, Pickard) and pair them with a 1a/b goalie (Elliott, Johnson, Mason, Smith, Howard)
I hope the Devils decide to move Schneider as he is a great fit and I would gladly offer Gillies+16+D prospect (Kylington or Hickey). The Devils may just not be willing to move him however
Another goalie that I hope the Flames check on is Mrazek.

Muzzati/Kidd/Trefilov were considered a pretty impressive trifecta
Years later it was Irving, Keetley, Lalande.
I like this crop too but just underscoring that relying on one of these to pan out as a true #1 isn't a plan - it is hope. And hope isn't a plan.

#1 goaltender discussions have to be some of the worst on CP. Such pie in the sky thoughts or what have you done for me lately.
Stick with Elliot until you can either develop someone from within or find a diamond in the rough from elsewhere. We ain't going to be contenders for years anyways - so there is plenty of time.

That is pretty big hit on the salary cap. I would like to see Bernier and Rittich/Gillies rotation. Many will argue that Rittich and/or Gillies isn't ready to be backup because they haven't played 100 games in the AHL but I would counter with Darling, Grubauer and Raanta didn't play 100 games in the AHL before getting backup duties.

I would like Fleury. What I really don't want is to hear the choice of goalie went like this.
1. We weren't in on Bishop.
2. We weren't in on Fluery
3. We were in on ? but other teams gave offers that ? team preferred.
4. We settled for what was leftover.

I do not think Matt Murray is the goalie Pitt is letting go.
After Fleury was outstanding in rounds 1 and 2 they took their first available chance to give Murray the starting net.

A hypothetical question... cause it's summer and this isn't getting resolved any time soon...
If the Devils gave these two trade options to the Flames, which would people choose? Or do you choose to walk away?
To CGY
- Schneider
To NJ
- Gillies
- 2017 16th overall pick
OR
To NJ
- Parsons
- 2018 2nd round pick
