If anyone is interested - the Calgary LCG group meet on Thursday evenings at the Sentry Box starting at 6:00pm. I'll be down there teaching the group how to play the Game of Thrones Card game so drop in if you're interested.

I've heard the Game of Thrones card game is a lot of fun. I have games nights once or twice a month and I've been thinking about getting this, but not everyone who comes has seen the show or read the books - would they be at a pretty big disadvantage?

Not a disadvantage no, but the AGOT lore is definitely one of the things that makes the game fun. The core set is a great way to get four people into the game as you'll all be learning the game together and the prebuilt decks are good enough for that.
I'm not sure what level of 'gamers' your group is but I think the biggest stumbling block is rule interpretation when playing. It would require some reading prior to the get together or you'll spend the majority of your evening wondering what's going on.
That being said - when you do get the rules down, it's one of the most enjoyable games I've ever played. A group of us at work played everyday at lunch for close to six months.

We'll probably try it out. Whenever we do try an advanced game we generally spend the first hour or so getting the rules & play down. Thanks for the info!
God I love the GMT Games fall sale. Just ordered a stack of wargames, not too many euro style games produced by this company although they have dabbled with games like Dominant Species.
It's like a Steam Sale for war gamers! Though I can still find cheaper prices for most of the games on Meeplemart.
Anyone thinking of getting Twilight Struggle, it's awesome. If someone was really into the Cold War theme, they might also be interested in the pseudo-sequel 1989.

Fantastic game. My friend was explaining the rules to me and I was extremely confused. Seemed daunting, but once you actually try it, it's a lot of fun. I would totally recommend it. Better than all the other ones I've played like Settlers, San Juan, pillers of the earth...
Another good one is El Grande.

Really? I use the P500 program so I got 50% off and the dough goes right to GMT. Only thing I dislike is shipping price. I love 1989, great game, takes a long time to get comfortable with strategies which helps with replayability. I find it damn hard to win as communist in the mid to late year card deck.
I ended up acquiring Panzer, Andean Abyss, Red Winter, and Ardennes 44. Should keep me occupied for a long time.
