And sure, maybe if he skated more during the offseason he would be even better. Or maybe it would completely screw-up his timing and release and he wouldn't be the same player.
I don't see why during his break time he has to be skating. As long as he is staying fit it's fine.
He does look pudgy, but that is probably just the way he looks.

He's never been "svelte" ... but he looks more like a baseball player than a hockey player now.
He still plays elite, but when one of your "the guys" doesn't take it seriously it sends a pretty bad message. Imagine how he could play if he took fitness seriously.

Haha, a hockey forum contributor talking about a pro athletes fitness level is pretty hilarious.

Well no one on a hockey forum should talk about anything then ... since we're not hockey players what do we know?

You can comment on anything you want. I just think calling a guy lazy and out of shape because you "think" he looks too chubby to be a pro athlete is hilarious.
The results speak for themselves.

I think he doesn't have the dedication to fitness that other pros do and I think it's obvious by looking at him. I didn't say he was too chubby to be a pro athlete.

Ok so you see it too. He doesn't really have any muscle definition and he kinda looks like he has a gut there. No one is denying he can play, the guy is good...for now. Out of shape players in their 20's usually can't keep it up when they get older but the biggest issue is that he's showing younger guys that you don't have to be in shape or even try or care about hockey off the ice to succeed. I'm pretty sure if he was on the Flames, Gio would have beat him into shape by now.

not really, I could tell you were being facetious but if you think that he is in shape then that just furthers the point of how oiler fans have low standards. Kessel is out of shape.

When is that picture from? He certainly looked fatter this year before training camp than in this pic that looks more like his midseason condition. I can tell you that on a lot of teams that level of conditioning in the picture above would be teetering on unacceptable (still carries a spare tire) let alone how fat he came to camp this season. I get that he's probably one of those guys that naturally has issues keeping the weight off but he gets paid an awful lot of money to be the best player on his team and with that should come the onus to be in the best shape possible and it's pretty clear he is not. As has been said it's also poor leadership when young players see the guy they are supposed to look up to not take care of his body or his job as seriously as he should. You only have to look at the Leafs performance annually to see that leadership in the locker room is in fact something that is lacking but I wouldn't expect an Oilers fan to be able to comprehend the value of leadership in a locker room.

Again - he's a good player with very good results. How good could he be if he actually put in the work that other players did?
He could be a Stamkos type player if he was in the same type of condition. But he puts up his 35 goals and PPG so you can bury your head in the sand and pretend he's not wasting his potential to be a top 2-3 guy in the league.

Sure Kessel is elite, but if he was jacked he'd be like, super-duper elite! That's how fitness works, right guys

Being in the best shape possible certainly has helped the best player in the game as Crosby is in fantastic shape. Don't kid yourself as the majority of top players are in very good condition. Iginla was always amongst the most fit players in Flames training camp and it's one of those reasons while not very vocal was still looked at as a leader.

If I wanted a counterpoint I wouldn't go with Mario. Maybe LaFleur and his smoking or Keith Tkachuk.
