Great write up on Treliving
http://blog.mysanantonio.com/rampage...s-the-big-hat/
Quote:
When former Rampage general manager, Brad Treliving, sat in the AT&T Center pressbox, it was usually a pretty good show.
Treliving was always in a good mood before the game, chatty and engaging. We enjoyed some good conversations about the game in general and about the Central Hockey League, which he helped become a pretty good hockey league as the circuit’s president.
But once the puck dropped, all idle conversation was over. It was time to focus on the game.
We’d still have conversation going, but it was all about the game. No more reminiscing about a certain restaurant in Tulsa. Treliving was in laser-beam mode.
Then, suddenly, when a Rampage player did something really off-the-wall, I would silently begin the countdown. “Three-two-one, we have lift off!” There would be Treliving suddenly studying the lighting and duct-work high above the ice in the AT&T Center ceiling.
On one particularly bad night by the team, I looked over to find an empty seat next to me. Treliving was so upset he moved to the empty section next to the press box. After each knuckleheaded play, Treliving would move over a section. By the end of the period, he was six sections away, and only the long, black tarps that cover the perennially vacant balcony seats kept him from doing laps upstairs that night.
He just didn’t abide incompetence. And it’s this kind of passion that has led him to sit in the big chair. In Calgary. As the new general manager of the NHL Flames.

Listening to the old hockey writers show with Treliving - one thing interesting he mentions that Phoenix was terrible at faceoffs and they made sure to go out and address it. In particular they signed Vern Fiddler who's a UFA this summer. He is an older player but wouldn't surprise me if a faceoff guy is someone they moved on this summer.

^^^ Brian Boyle would address this as well, along with other issues like size and playing "heavy".
He's also only 29.

I was ready to join the Boyle bandwagon, but was surprised to see how few points he is scoring. Would have thought he'd have a few more just by parking himself in front of the net on the powerplay. Might be still worth taking a chance on him though.

Didn't know where else to put this, so I thought this would do, given Treliving's comments regarding developing players slowly, and applies well to Baertschi.
On Toffoli and Pearson in L.A., by LeBrun

Quote:
"I think there's a difference between making a team and being ready," Kings GM Dean Lombardi said as he sat back in his office chair Wednesday. "It's analogous at times to how you see these quarterbacks in football, 'OK, he makes the team, but is he ready?' You see a young QB make a bad team in the NFL. 'OK, he's made the team, but is he really ready?' There's a difference. Given that the role both these kids will one day play for us, higher up in our lineup, it requires more training. It's a more difficult job description. I think we felt, the old adage, nobody ever failed from being over-prepared."
|
Quote:
Lombardi's eyes widen as he talks about going to see Pearson play an AHL game one night earlier this season.
"It was a game in Providence and I had told him I would be there in the building," the Mad Professor said. "He had two goals and an assist, and was the game's first star. I remember thinking, 'That's how do you do it. Stick it right up my a--.' He was awesome."
They both were awesome in AHL Manchester. Their response to that demotion was important.
"That's part of the test," Lombardi said. "Are you going to go down there and get better or are you going to pout? That's part of the player's growth."

^^^ Its a cute story, but the real reason they were down was because of the salary cap. Same with the Wings and Nyquist.
The Kings were sending guys down to the minors during the Olympics to eek out just a little cap space.

Both started the season in the AHL. Both were recalled in November.
Pearson played 3/4 of the season there - some up, some down.
Toffoli played the rest of the season with the Kings.

Toffoli and Pearson have two of the lowest cap hits on the Kings (only Nolan and Jones are lower).
If anything, sending them down hurt the Kings' cap situation. If cap space was his main concern, Lombardi could have cut loose a bigger veteran contract and handed roster spots to the kids right out of camp.

They went up and down when roomed opened on due to players on LTIR - Jeff Carter and Jonathan Quick both spent time on IR and it opened up room for them at times.
Toffoli came up when Carter went down and then Quick went down and opened up cap space for them.

They didn't have anyone else on two way contracts who could go down without keeping their cap hit on the books.

Boyle would be an excellent 4th line centre for this team. He's definitely not the kind of player to put up many points, but on an energy line with Bouma or Max Reinhart I think he would be really effective.
I doubt he would fetch any more than $2 million a year on the market. I hope Treliving considers him.

You know, it's possible for there to be more than one reason at the same time.
Not everything is black and white - there can be multiple issues simultaneously impacting a situation.

Just going to reborn this thread with saying that I was curious with the history of the Coyotes' drafting when Treliving was AGM. Came across this article with the history. Treliving was hired after the 2007 draft, so from the 2008-2013 drafts, the Coyotes picked:
12 centres
9 left wingers
5 right wingers
15 defencemen
7 goalies.
Quote:
Of the 26 players the Coyotes drafted from 2007-2010 (19 from 2008-2010), 10 (eight) have played at least one NHL game. Of those 10 (eight), three (two) are what we could call established NHLers - Turris (2007), Boedker, and Ekman-Larsson - while Stone looks likely to join that group.
If the goal is to get one out of seven picks correct - 14% - and the Coyotes have at least four of 26 (three of 19) picks we could consider successes - 15% (16%) - then with Treliving, the Coyotes appear to have drafted rather well. This still doesn't count players like Gormley and Murphy, who are still just breaking into a tough defence core; and Visentin, who, as a goalie, may get fewer opportunities for games.
Quality of player is exceptionally important as well. Turris, 24, has spent most of his NHL career in Ottawa, and is .51 PPG. Boedker, 24, has been a regular Coyote for about three and a half seasons, and is .43 PPG. Ekman-Larsson, 22, should be viewed as a budding star, and is .43 PPG as a defenceman.
|
Looks like our defensive depth should be getting better soon.
I apologize if this article was already posted.
