Yeah Irving was better than Karlsson. I am not sure what the debate is about? The only thing i can tell with the back-up stats is that Kipper hides how bad a team Calgary was for the last couple of years.

or the Flames have no confidence in their backup and so don't play their A game. Maybe a bit of both?

That's certainly a concern. The other thing to consider is that any goaltender in that game would have looked like a minor league player. Kiprusoff looked no better than Irving even when the Bruins turned down the heat.

We have to ask what's the first issue then: Getting the Flames to play well in front of non-Kiprusoff goalies or getting back ups capable of winning games?
Irving played many games on the back half of back-to-back situations (5 or 6 out of 7. My memory on a couple escape me). He also had an average shots against of 38/60 minutes and an average goals for by the Flames of about 1.5 per 60 minutes. None of this screams success for winning from Irving's point of view. Even if he stood on his head and had a sub-2.00 GAA, that goals for suggests a losing record would still occur. It seems to me that the way the team is in front of him is an issue too.

Including the Boston game, Irving still had a respectable .912 save percentage. Not bad at all. Unfortunately he didn't get many wins.
Pretty sure there is a weird stat out there that states wins are more important than sv% and GAA when predicting a rookie goalie's future success. If he wins games, the team will play him more in the future instead of bailing on him and playing a different goalie. The opposite happens when a rookie has a good sv% (the only stat worth talking about with goalies), but few wins. Wish I could dig up that article...

Kipper had a good year last year, but other than that his save percentage three out of the last 5 years was .905 or worse, yet the management have pounded into everyones head that without kipper this team is worse than thirtieth place. To me that is a pretty big statement about the the team in front of him, if .905 sv% is what we can expect from an elite goalie in front of the Flames, then .912 from your backup has to be pretty decent.

Did the Grizzlies just pick up Theo Peckham off waivers?

Top-6 defenseman for the Oilers gets released by an ECHL team. That's pretty funny.

Kind of an odd situation with Peckham.
According to Dan Tencer, Peckham asked to be released from his ECHL team and now Utah picks him up...

I'm tired of apologizing for our backup goalies. They've en masse been horrible for us outside of Cujo and maybe Toskala. One of them, step up and do the job, or we'll find someone else. If Irving doesn't show he's capable within five starts of doing the job, give Taylor a shot. Call up Brust. Rotate them all in until you find someone who can fill the role. Whatever you can to keep 34 fresh, you do it. Enough with the excuses.

I think the best we've had since the lockout is Joseph. I've been asking for a solid veteran backup for a while now.

Ward actually brought up some interesting point about Baertshi and how he is passing out of necessity and not creativity. It actually describes what I have been seeing to in the games I watch. If anyone wants to listen hear is the link:

Just look for Troy Ward with Rob Kerr

Irving played well in all but 1 game. Most posters may not realize that two overtime losses occurered when the Flames were short handed. Hi s win against Vancouver on Hockey Night in Canada was fantastic. In back to back games in recent years the Flames were horrible.

I was in attendance for Irving's first NHL start, in Florida, and he played very well (SO loss) despite the wheels coming off the team in front of him late in the game. After the game I met Panthers goaltending coach Rob Tallas and he had nothing but high praise for Irving.

Yeah, he has looked really good in the majority of his starts. .912 is awesome, all things considered. Just would have been good for his chances of sticking as the backup/future starter if he got a couple more W's.
Didn't realize both OTLs were shorthanded. Good to keep in mind for sure.

Had a good talk with Danny Taylor earlier this week. Should be up on THW on Monday. Quite impressed with that gentleman's play this year (or so).
