Small market. Low Canadian dollar. Same reason they left for Colarado.

Not a small market at all, and the Canadian dollar won't be the same issue this time. The Nords will be fine.

I read yesterday the dollar is predicted to hit $0.65 in 2017.

Is that better or worse than 94?

Quebec City is a very small market by NHL or any major league sport standards. Still I think it will work but the Canadian dollar isn't helping anyone right now. One major difference from last time, a hard cap system. That's a huge factor as to why Winnipeg and Quebec can have a chance.

And revenue sharing. Though, I'm not sure the details of revenue sharing in this CBA, only that it exists.

Of cities not in the NHL, QC has the largest "NHL fan population" according to avidity studies like this one:

I think they mixed up the '% of avid NHL fans' for Montreal and Vancouver.

How do they figure Kingston's population is that high?

Must be including Belleville, Napanee, Brockville, and Trenton. But they are barely in the commutershed for Kingston.

I think the number includes part of East Central Ontario.
Im sure most of those numbers include a catchment area, because fans will drive to watch hockey or can tune in from anywhere.

Cool, is there a link to a video or article? Hoping they are back soon, they deserve a team.

Don't disagree, but it's still a small market.

That avidity article is almost 4 years old, and it was questionable in 2013 when the economy was in better shape.

Still, if everything else in the table is the same, the LV media market has grown from 1.726M in 2013 to 1.956M in 2015 - a similar growth rate would put the market at ~2.2M in 2017. QC has grown from 1.095M to 1.110 in 2015 - a similar growth rate would put the market at 1.125M in 2017.

If avidity hasn't changed since 2013 (unlikely in Las Vegas since the team announcement, but let's assume for now it's unchanged), then you'd have 110,000 "NHL fans" in Las Vegas, and 540,000 "NHL fans" in Quebec City. That would mean (with everything else remaining equal) Las Vegas "added" ~20,000 fans by 2017, and Quebec City "added" 10,000 fans by 2017.

Las Vegas is adding fans at twice the rate QC is without even accounting for increased interest since the pursuit of an NHL team was begun and since an expansion team was awarded. It's a rapidly growing market with a lot of new eyeballs to potentially get interested in the league.

For anyone interested, here is the link where Regis Labeaume "guarantees" the return of Les Nordique

Yeah that % seems low for Montreal. I figured they'd have the highest % in the league actually.

I would think that aswell, even if they're not though I can't imagine them being the lowest % in Canada as this graph suggests.

The person built their list of "Avid" fans by looking at the Google searches for "NHL" from each city. If he didn't account for people using "LNH" in Quebec, that would cause Montreal's numbers to be lower.

It also seems like a pretty silly way to determine if someone is an avid fan of the sport.

Well that explains Vancouver's high percentage. They don't know anything, so they have to look everything up.

Is it just me or is that a dumb way to find avidity? How many of us type NHL into google?
I haven't done that in probably 15 years.

Yeah. I can only speak for myself, but I have links to NHL.com and the Flames website bookmarked, so I don't ever search for them. I might occasionally use "NHL" in a search if I'm looking for stats or something, so that might give it some credence. Even then, I usually know where to go to find what I'm looking for and don't need Google.

On the other hand, I'm not an avid fan of the NBA, MLS, MLB, or NFL, but sometimes I'll want to look up something for those sports and I will Google them.

Using that method, I might be considered a more avid fan of the other sports than the NHL, which isn't true at all.
