Now lets not bash the individual mail carriers here, I'm pretty sure that the Union told them a good story and convinced them that Canada Post would fold, give them what they wanted because dang nabbit they're organized labour, and they'd be back to work no harm done in a couple of weeks.

Canada Post didn't fold in this case though, and we're seeing that more and more with organized labor versus business.

While this wasn't a crushing like Telus crushing the union, it was a pretty bad beating, and it also harmed the NDP party in parliment as well.

Just coming out of a recession, people don't want to hear or deal with this kind of crap.

Higher postal rates would pay for the expanded service.

Workers seem to be out of touch with a stark reality: Canada Post isn’t a make-work project.

http://www.sunnewsnetwork.ca/sunnews...03-160539.html

In material distributed Friday, the union is calling on Canada Post to be more like France's postal service, which is combating reduced postal use by starting a new service called, Bonjour facteur! (Good morning, postman!).

Under the program, French letter carriers would do jobs usually carried out by family members, such as checking-in on the elderly and delivering medicines from local pharmacies to people with mobility problems.

WTF?! Next thing you know, the postal union will want to start up hospices, dog walking services or take over pool boy/milkmen duties for MILF's.
In Germany Duetsche Post is has quite a large banking arm and it stems from days in that part of the world where post offices took deposits. The banking arm grew and they bought a bunch of banks over the years and now actually are quite big. This is a non-starter for Canada Post because it currently performs zero banking functions and has the same where where-withall towards starting one up as any other non-banking company. It's also quite laughable that the union believes in this as progress, because it's not like letter carriers or mail sorters would make good bankers. Nor would the service be able to compete for talent if it were unionized.

The French example is essentially a full blown NDP style make-work project. If I were a postie I would be embarassed to work for a union that essentially proposed that my future work exploits should be to live off the avails of taxpayer funded charity.

The concept of labour coming together with management to make business decisions is laughable and fails everytime. The role of Unions are only with regards to worker exploitation and not worker redundancy. The problem most of them have is that they fail to understand that the product of labor is actually the point as opposed to the process thereof.

Maybe they should form an escort service for lonely horny 60 year old ladies who are stuck at home during the day.

Mailman - "Here's your mail Glady's, and here's my schlong"

5 minutes later.

Mailman - "Aaaand here's your invoice"

If the clearing of the backlog in mail involves me getting 5 weeks worth of useless flyers jammed in my mailbox, I'm gonna booby trap my mailbox and become a freeman on the land who does not have a need for mail service.

So put a note on your mailbox that says "No flyers/junk mail please"...Not hard.

And an FYI sometimes they have to deliver the flyers regardless as Canada Post has a contract with the business to deliver that particular 3rd class mail.

I thought they recently clarified that by law all items have to be delivered regardless of any notes the person leaves.

Everybody knows that. That was the poster's point - it'll be annoying when we get the backlog of junk mail we don't want and that a sticker won't prevent us from getting.

personally, i can ahrdly wait to start receiving 3rd class mail - it is the only kind of mail that saves you money - 1st and second class mail cost you money........

of course that assumes that my postal worker is not using up his banked sick days to retire early......

As stated before they can't use them unless it's because of injury/sickness and they require a doctor's note.

To those who don't believe the sticker on the mail box should prevent delivery of junk.

Yeah, that's always been a major flaw of CP. Not puting replacement carriers on routes of sick or retired people. So many communities go without mail now.

Some types of admail are not considered admail, depending on its' function. This is called Consumers' Choice. However, people should realize that Canada Post isn't usually the one bypassing the rules. There are plenty of companies (such as Adco) that will deliver flyers regardless of what your mailbox says because that is their entire job.

No one gives a #### about the mail.

If they replace the letter carriers with hot chicks in bikinis, then they've made progress.

Yeah, no one except charities who recieve the majority of their donations through the mail and small businesses who rely upon the inexpensive shipping of Canada Post in order to survive.

There are alternatives.

Hell, usually I don't give a carp about unions but in this case they've screwed themselves over.

Maybe the union leaders should send some charitable donations?
