"Dad take care of yourself I don't want you to die because I like you" was what made me quit on September 22nd 2011. My son was 3 then and still says it now.

It's really nice to have that kind of support in your life.

Also he was starting to question why I would disappear and come back smelling stinky poo. I did not want to lie to him because I didn't want him to know I was weak and let a smoke control my life so quitting was the only option.

My dad has shown a serious interest in quitting again (tried cold turkey when my mom was pregnant with my sister), now specifically with the help of electronic cigarettes. Just wondering if anybody had any suggestions or recommendations about them.
From what I can see there are some more or less readily accessible in Calgary but I'm curious about the different models (eGO? eRoll? eVic?) and a recommended vendor. So far he's tried out disposable types so it seems like he is comfortable with the idea at least.
Much appreciated.

I can't comment on the Electronic Cigarettes. Never tried them. I have quit about a half dozen times over the years and not matter what I've used to assist me it has always been the mind that decides to quit in the end. If a smoker is not committed 100% in the mind they will fail.
Try buying your Dad a copy of Allen Carrs Easy Way to Stop Smoking. It's like a non smoking pep rally and talks directly to what a smoker does not like about the habit. Hopefully it can help his frame of mind and he will be successful.
It's my third day without cigarettes and I couldn't be happier!

I tried the E-cigs when i was first trying to quit. Started out with the gas station brands and then bought a kit with flavored juices. Noticed that i went from having a smoke every hour to taken pulls all the time. I swear in five years these will all be exposed as some marketing tactic by the big tobacco companies to trick consumers into continuing to think smoking is harmless, while the e-cigs end up being worse off in the long run.
That said the kits were better than the store brands and most of the kits seemed to be close in value to each other unless you were looking to spend a bunch of money. The difference seemed to be in the flavor selection vendor to vendor. A kit was around $100 ish plus 20 bucks for juice which would last me a week.

Good luck prairie, I'm still going strong from last January and can't imagine how I ever smoked in the first place let alone ever starting back up again. I do still get the urge to when I watch someone in the process of lighting up but as soon as they actually light it and I smell it that urge dies immediately.

I quit 2 years ago June 2/11. I initially tried Champix but found i couldn't completely stop, i was still having a few smokes a day plus the pill. One morning i just threw out my pills and smokes, made up my mind that i was done. I have cravings almost everyday but they are manageable and i know i will never smoke again.
I smoked for almost 20 years at least a pack a day and I truly feel better, stronger and healthier then i ever have. I put on a LOT of weight but was able to lose most of it after the first year, still have a little ways to go but i will get there.
Like some have said earlier IMO its mind over matter everything else is just an aid and will not make you stop until your ready to stop.

I am at almost 4 months without a smoke now with the help of my e-cig. I wouldn't have been able to quit without it.
The way I feel now puffing my e-cig multiple times a day vs smoking cigarettes isn't even close. I am way better off now in terms of my lungs and energy level. My cardio is 100% better also.
E-cigs are a great tool in the fight against smoking and in my experience are not even a drop in the bucket to cigarettes in terms of being harmful.

I hope I'm wrong about this, but i feel like in 20 years we will be looking back at E-cigs in horror. It will be like curing cancer by getting AIDS.

Given the ingredients of the e-juice, I'm not sure how that would even be possible, but I guess we can agree to disagree on this one.

There is sixty years worth of evidence that tobacco companies, both manipulate the information regarding ingredients in their products, and manipulate the information on the harm their products cause. But I'm sure its all good this time.

3.5 months smoe free, haven't even had a puff. I have smoked a Cuban on a couple occassions when sitting out by the pool with the ball team after a tourney, but you don't inhale those. The first Cuban I had after quitting I inhaled once out of habit, coughed my brains out, just hadn't smoked in a month and was sitting there drinking beer.....
I feel so much better. Continued perserverance to those who have quit, and to the new quitters in here, you can do it. This thread is full of people who have, the world is full of people who have.

Just to bump this important thread and hopefully pull someone else out of the habit.
It's been five weeks now. Easiest time I've ever had quiting smoking because my mind was firmly made up.
If I can do it you can too. Seriously.

^^^ did you go with e-cig? I have it in my head that the end of the month is it for me, but am worried about the habits (driving etc)
Tried the patch, gum, cold turkey, but the morning drive has always gotten better of me.

No e-cig. Just quit on my own. First couple of days I thought about it a lot but I didn't want to smoke anymore, The addiction was just telling me to do it.
Feels good now. In the past it was harder because in the back of my mind I was losing out on something. This time was different, I was glad to finally not be doing it.

Sounds like you may have read "No More Ashtrays" by Allen Carr.
I read that before quitting cold turkey 6 weeks ago, and it completely changed my mind set while quitting.
I was no longer depriving myself of something I wanted.
Not only have I not even had a single puff off a cigarette in six weeks, more importantly I haven't even wanted to have a puff off one.....and I'm around smokers all day, every day.
I feel great, and I can confidently say I will never have another cigarette the rest of my life.

Today's marks a year since I quit.
Not a single puff.
Feels phenomenal to say that.

I quit once around 3 yrs ago. If there was an "easy" way to quit smoking, it was champix. Stuff worked like a charm and I experienced no side effects. As luck would have it, the day I started taking champix, the stress load just went through the roof. It was one thing after another but I managed to stay off the smokes. At the time I really didn't want to quit, my g/f just announced out of the blue one day that she had quit and I felt compelled to try too.
Then the relationship troubles started (totally unrelated to the stress of quitting) and it slowly eroded my will to stay quit. I was in such a bad place I needed SOMETHING to help me cope. Never was a drinker, don't do drugs so I bummed one and it all came off the rails. Started smoking again.
Fast Forward to today. Relationship troubles well behind us. I kinda want to try again. I really do. I think I'm in a far better place mentally to try again as I acutally kinda want to this time.
But the one thing that my mind always drifts back to.....vacations. I don't know how I'll manage this part. I LOVE the first smoke you have after getting off the plane. Wake up the next day and enjoy a beautiful sunrise in a tropical local while having a smoke. Non stop alcohol/beaches/parties. This is where I would truly be tested I think.
Anyone else deal with this part? What parts of your life were you most worried about missing smoking and how did you deal with it?
