So I'm in the middle of replacing my tires (man has there been a lot of swearing getting the tires on/off) and I noticed the there's a small bent lip in one section coming off the tire.

So obviously this isn't great, but generally is this something I need to get fixed before I ride again, or functionally would it still be ok?
In case it helps, they are Mavic Elite Allroad aluminum wheels.

Yeah, I wouldn't ride on that. Pinch flat waiting to happen. Doesn't look too terrible, maybe a shop can straighten that out.

A Critical Mass ride tonight that may hit harder than others, starting at 6:30pm from ContainR in Sunnyside on 2nd avenue (just across from where Vendome was).

Fully expecting people to post emotional threads in the main forum about this tragedy... and then go on to rail against protected bike lanes in the yyc politics thread.
On a more specific Calgary note, I've been biking 5th street downtown the last couple weeks and man alive is that infrastructure in rough shape. Covered in gravel and debris, crumbling to its steel supports, barriers kicked into the lane, and all the paint fading out. Our political leaders seem to have lost whatever drive they once had on protected bike infrastructure and nowhere is it more obvious than in the neglected downtown pilot track.

As a newer cyclist, this tragedy has me not wanting to ride on roads anymore, not that I did much before as I stick to paths mostly, but was starting to transition to roads with a newer road bike.
I read in the JG thread that it's better to take the full lane instead of the shoulders. I just don't see that working here... if anything I would think it would aggravate already aggressive drivers and potentially be more dangerous.
I have a Varia radar which helps, at least when it goes off I'm aware that a vehicle is coming up from behind and I can make sure I'm closer to the side. I can understand the reasoning behind taking the full lane as by riding on the side you're inviting them to pass...
Was hoping a more experienced cyclist could chime in and express what they do and what works for them.
Cycling is a fantastic sport and has opened up a whole new world for me, but I'm calculating the risk/reward factor...

City road riding I stay as far right as practical based on road conditions. I don't even filter to the front at lights for fear of pissing off someone in a vehicle. It's all defensive all the time, and a day like today definitely heightens the tension.
FYI all, if I die thanks to a vehicle feel free to politicize the heck out of my death.

It’s the reason I switched to mainly gravel. I can hear them coming and there’s way fewer cars.

I take the lane in areas where there isn’t a full curb lane or the curb has lots of parked cars. In opens you up to being rear ended but stops the accidental side swipe.
I haven’t found a issue as long as you aren’t holding up traffic and work with cars behind you to let them by.

I don’t ride in the city, I stick to low traffic rural roads almost exclusively (if I’m not on gravel).
I always use my Varia along with a bar end rear view mirror. The varia makes sure I know someone is there, then I can watch in the mirror if they are drifting over the center line away from me. If they don’t, I like to think at least I might be able to hit the ditch.
If there is lots of room for the vehicle to move over and give me space, I stay to the far right. Most drivers are good with many moving fully over into the opposite direction lane, and another large group that give me 1.5 meters even if they aren’t all the way over.
If there is traffic oncoming, that is when I will take the lane, to make sure they don’t get the idea of just squeezing by, between me and the oncoming vehicle.
There’s no guarantees, just risk minimizing. But I figure if I’m on quiet roads, and I’m only getting passed by a few vehicles an hour, it is minimizing the risk of someone either drunk or completely distracted running me over.

I’ve found myself in the city trying to stick to routes with paths or separated bike lanes (with physical barriers, none of that paint nonsense) more and more over the past few years. My mountain bike has also gotten a lot more rides on trails than before (which is great, it’s my favourite bike anyway). If I have an accident mountain biking it is 99.9% my fault and an accident. If it’s on the road, 50-50 if it’s attempted murder. I’ve virtually stopped riding with one of my best friends because he can be unpredictable on the roads and is an accident waiting to happen

I ride a lot on city roads in the morning. Edmonton drivers are just as bad and aggressive as Calgary drivers, but actually I find if I plan my route right I can go on a lot of double lane roads and not be a nuisance and I feel that enhances my safety level.
For all of my longer rides on the weekend I dip into the country which is really close to my house. I'm fortunate that there are tons of secondary highways with limited traffic so that I can ride in relative peace, with out without a club.

I did this years ago. Didn’t want to be around when he rode into traffic. No attention span.

I was there, didn't have my jersey at work otherwise I would have. I'm surprised we didn't go past the memorial stairs but having hundreds of riders circling the dome parkade was an experience. My only issue with this is that it seems like its proprietary controls are for Zwift and you get lock into the Zwift eco system. They just raised prices again and I don't want that Tron/Mario Kart look. I'm gravitating to other cycling apps now like MyWhoosh and Rouvy.

It was my first time joining the ride and it was a great vibe. I brought my e-cargo bike because it had lights for the ride home and was glad I did as we went up Center St. Not sure I'd have made it on an acoustic, I'm not that fit yet.
