Worst off-season in a long time. I am an optimist and really respected BT. That is no longer the case.
Worst offseason since 2012 in my opinion. Regehr+2nd+Kotalik for Butler, Byron
Tanguay got a 5 year deal, the team drafted Jankowski, and the only excitement was when they took a real big run at Brad Richards which fortunately failed.

I don't even blame treliving anymore. Flames are just a bad franchise. Winning a cup isn't even a goal, it's a luxurious consequence should it happen, for them.

So that is the angle the negative Nancy's will run with if the team succeeds. Good to know.

Funny enough the Flames would have won that trade if they retained Byron.
Tanguay was traded for David freakin Jones for no reason. He went on to produce at a respectable 0.6 point per game in Colorado.
Jankowski is unfortunate, but even if we had kept the pick at 12, you miss more than you hit at that spot.
The 2016 off-season takes the cake simply because of the Brouwer signing.
Trelivings options were to make radical changes to the core, blow it up and rebuild, or to make one final go with this core by surrounding them with Sutter players.
A rebuild isn't a legitimate option, at least not this season. I don't know if he/they tried to mix up the core but that's tough to do following a down season (don't need any Hall for Larson moves). Especially with a flat cap and a pandemic.
I don't mind option 3. It costs nothing and we might as well see what this team can do with more grit and a season with Sutter. If it doesn't work out then you know it before extending Gaudreau and Tkachuk, and that's your trigger to make the massive changes.

That offseason is better because it at least brought Tkachuk and there was a lot of rumors about a Bishop trade or the team trading up so lots of excitement. We can’t really call this offseason the worst yet until we live with the results.
2012 the team had just missed the playoffs for the third year in a row getting older and lost a trade and failed to add anything to a core that had sputtered for a long time.
Every offseason since has had excitement
13- Monahan
14- Bennett
15- Hamilton+Frolik
16- Tkachuk, Brouwer, Elliott
17- Hamonic, Smith
18- Lindholm, Hanifin, Neal, Ryan
19- Lucic, Talbot (boring but that team just had their best season in 30 years)
20- Markstrom, Tanev
21- Coleman, Zadorov?

I don’t think it was no reason. IIRC he didnt like the coaching staff, in large part due to them making him play on the PK, and he asked to be traded. Quietly of course as was tradition at the time, not through the media. Someone tell me if I’m misremembering but I’m relatively positive that was the reason for the divorce.

Ahh I wouldn't say I'm negative, per se.
Apathetic would be the better description at this point. It's been a long time, with a lot of similar iterations and results.
Really just looking for a reason for hope with the team, but right now winning a cup seems further away than ever.
Don't get me wrong, if they come out and have a barn burner of a year I'm all for it. Somewhat resigned to it being unlikely at this point though.

The offseason isn't over yet, put the pitchforks away.
"It's only the first 20 games!"
"It's only the first half!"
"Who do you think will be available at 14th pick?"
The off season isn't a linear path to make significant changes, it's extremely front heavy. These are the type of signings you get after the first week.

That and his demeanor around the coaching change. Was really curt in response to some valid questions. Said he had to be better, but hasn't done anything meaningful to rectify the failures that were on him aside from being forced into a Sutter hire by an ownership veto.
The guy clearly still hasn't learned from his ineffective past approach and doesn't like being called out on it when its been totally justified.
This summer was his opportunity to change some minds and buy a bit of leash from the faithful and he went and did more of the same s####.

He should invent pure fiction or cook up a wild conspiracy theory or two to make his press conferences more entertaining. It's the missing puzzle piece to being a s successful franchise.
