I love the guy and tune in just to watch him, but thinking long term, and with the hopes of making noise in the post season, should we take advantage of his good contract and consider maximizing a return. I'm not talking about giving him away. I'm talking about getting a good package in return of assets that will help now, and in the future, but fit better with the team that is being built. I'm talking about going after players like Sean Coutuier or Nolan Patrick in Philadelphia, or a Taylor Hall or Nico Hischier in New Jersey type of deal. A major return for a major player.

I think the Flames have to make a decision of he is the guy that going to be able to be a major player for them in big games. I equate this to when Cliff Fletcher dealt Mike Bullard for Doug Gilmour. Bullard was coming off of a 103 point season and seemed like an immovable player for the Flames, but Fletcher read the tea leaves and saw more in Gilmour than he did in Bullard and made the deal. Johnny is my favorite Flame by a good margin, but thinking about winning the cup, I'm not sure the Flames do it with him as the straw that stirs the drink. Is it time to think about the bigger picture?
I love this idea. I would trade him to the Devils in the offseason for Taylor Hall. Maybe Taylor Hall plus since Johnny is signed for two more years than Hall at an unreal cap hit. Think of the narrative of the Calgary boy coming home to stick it to team that traded him away for magic beens. Please make this happen Tre or at least sign Hall when he becomes a free agent!

Brodie has played well. It was expected to take some time for him to regain some of his natural instinct and just play the game, something that was taken away from him under GG.

Even in the cap world there's no way it would be a one for one deal. Hall last year, on a not so good team was making things happen, single handedly winning games. That's pretty unusual for a forward to do and only a handful of players can do that. For his size he's been amazing for NJ and it showed through the MVP type year. Johnny is amazingly skilled and is electric, but dare I say it, not an MVP calibre player, yet, and maybe not ever. If a deal around those two players is up for grabs I'd imagine it would be Johnny and Bennett for Hall just to begin. MVP type players entering their prime are hard to acquire.

If that's the price you hope to sign Hall as a UFA then trade a core player for picks. Better to end up with the player and a cpl 1st rounders. Or just not get the player if he signs elsewhere.

And then we have to pay him $10mil on his next contract.

Yeah.

2018: Brodie’s first season 2013-24 was his best and he has only gotten worse

I used to think that all he has proven using counting stats is that he knows how to count. Now I don’t even know that.

He’s easily the weakest part of The Athletic. When you read his articles there’s no story.

He writes like he just watches lines of code from the Matrix and not the actual game itself. Just binary analysis.

If we did trade for Nylander I’d run the top 6 like:

Gaudreau - Lindholm - Nylander
Tkachuk - Monahan - Bennett

11 pts in 15 career playoff games.

Not sure that can be classified as "disappearing".

I know. There is no narrative, no breakdown, no insight. But Mr. “How Dare you suggest I know nothing about hockey” can’t even pick out video clips to support his points like Haynes, and if he does, they’re negative pieces or miscues that are patently obvious. No narratives about a players growth, what is driving them, who they are working with, how they approach getting better and seeing pieces of this in game film to form a narrative or a story worth telling.

The tipping point for me was when he came on here to whine, like he’s sacrificed his soul for his profession.

Give me a break.

Look at any person employed in the ACTUAL hockey industry, not the media. How many hours/mornings/evenings days/weeks away from their family. How many moves across the continent or globe. We may have our own opinions on performance, but no one can deny that even Gulutzan & his family have made tremendous & other worldly sacrifices to do what he’s done. Then he gets fired & moves on. He doesn’t have a childless meltdown because someone questions his knowledge.

What a joke.

He has to work on professionalism now that he's moving up. You can't be representing a publication that's attempting to gain a stronghold in the sportsworld by coming on a message board and beating your chest about how you played hockey when you were young and your brother played hockey and all that.

Just write your articles and respond professionally and cordially to any and all criticism or don't respond. You HAVE to do that. You cannot be childish, it will ruin your career and keep you as a brash blogger in the eyes of the casual fan. Do you want that or do you want to mature and be more?

I know. His analysis is worthy of the Fan. But I think he’s even too big of a prick to be hired by those drunken monkeys.

A month ago on Hockey Central “I Will Neault” pulled out the hot take of benching Brodie.

That was when I was like... what? Is that not the easiest answer? My 5 year old could come up with that conclusion.

He had a few bad games and was fighting the puck. When I watched I noticed several good things he was doing as well. There was no detailed assessment of his game, no risk/reward assessment, just the oversimplified.. scratch him.

But all that’s died down now that the stooges have a new whipping boy to pile onto, the goaltending... like that isn’t patently obvious.

I used to listen to that station religiously, just about anything they put out.

But now they are just loaded with pricks who constantly tell listeners to listen elsewhere. Maybe eventually someone will crowd source a podcast that aggregates hockey expertise in this city to force that station to up its game.

Rhett’s grown tiresome & repetitive. Why is he still there when someone like Cory Sarich is looking to break into media & has a lot more to offer, if only hard work to better himself.

I don’t mean to derail this thread, but it’s just that it would be nice to have hockey media in this city that actually creates content worthy of rumour discussion.

Your narrative against Brodie is getting bizarre. He has arguably been the Flames' best defenseman for the last handful of games, and is quickly re-establishing himself as the dominant player he was in 15/16.

Try watching him play through a non-biased lens, you might enjoy it.
2 mins into the game he didn't look too good. put one right on McDavid's tape on a poor breakout read. Oilers had the Flames pinned afterwards, but I'll admit that comment was pretty nit picky.

Brodie has been much better this year, I won't argue that either. After the
Leafs game earlier in the year, that was the first time in a long time (aside from maybe the second game of the year last year) where I actually thought Brodie looked like he was a competent top 4 D and he has been good since then. That said, he had been anywhere from ok to terrible over the past two years.

Should make for an interesting summer, a solid season playing with Gio (his crutch) might mean he would be a good asset to peddle.

Give me Talbot for Smith.

Both guys are getting run out of town by their fans.

4 straight L's for Talbot and has let in 6 goals on 22 shots in his current game against Vegas

Smith - nothing really needs to be said. Worst goalie in the league.

Talbot may not be a Top 10 starter but he's not as bad as his start to the season would show.

Look at Dubnyk since getting the #### out of that tire fire.

I like the idea of trading with the Oilers. That team reeks of desperation.

I think the Flames have drafted really well recently. I wonder if the Oilers would be nice enough to boost the Flames 2019 draft with 2nd and 3rd round picks for Michael Stone (they have LTIR space because of Sekera).
