Plus Columbus has stated that their first rounders are all in play for veteran help.
Maybe the Flames could try to add 4th overall without losing the 6th overall somehow....
Trade #1 -> Alex Tanguay, 27th-30th overall to Columbus for 14th overall, 44th overall
Trade #2 -> 14th Overall, 22nd Overall to Nashville for 4th Overall
...or something in that neighborhood.
Flames then pick:
4th
6th
44th
...and so on.

I don't think Nashville takes that. Would you take that for our 6th pick? I know I wouldn't, there's too large a drop off in players.

My question at the STH session was whether or not there were any players they viewed as not being part of the solution going forward (without naming names). There was an emphatic "yes", and Feaster hinted once again at Tanguay and his griping in the exit meetings. It's obvious they want to move on, but his words were something along the line of "well what should we do with you?!", so I'm sure they'd like to package #40 but I'm not sure it will be easy.

In defense of the Flames the Oilers past four seasons have been solely centered around who they picked in the draft and not what the team did on the ice in the regular season. The draft for them is really bigger than the actual season because the regular seasons have been horrible.

I have no idea if Nashville takes that.....they might, and not because they don't like whatever player they'd plan on taking at #4, but because maybe they still really like any number of players they would likely be able to snag at #14 and #22.
Teams trade down because:
A) They still think they'll get a player they really like at the later draft position
B) They want to add another asset

Going back to the Draft Value chart ( http://statsportsconsulting.com/main...Draftchart.pdf) and take a look at values:
29th overall (assuming the Pens beat the Bruins...which might not happen), that pick is worth 275.
14th is 456 and 44th is worth 196, for a total of 652. That means that tanguay is worth 377 (652 - 275), or about the same as #18 overall. Do you think Detroit would trade Tanguay for the 18th pick straight up? I'll answer that for you: NEVER.
|
It's never this cut and dry, but I'll definitely concede that I'm likely over valuing Tanguay in my proposal.

If anyone is interested here is a list of draft picks selected in 2011 that are going into the 2013 draft.
http://www.sportingnews.com/nhl/stor...g-combine-2009
Philippe Hudon shouldn't be on the list as he is in the college system.
I count 3 2nd rounders that are re-entering, thankfully none of our guys. Just goes to show that it's a crap shoot the further you go in, and that maybe we are best to hold onto our 1sts instead of dropping down to get more picks, which is the way I have been leaning prior to reading this.
Lastly - both EDM and VAN crapped the bed on their 3rd rounders (both Euro goalies), with much better selections taken after them. Both teams need to look at their scouting departments as they have come up snake eyes more than a few times.

Tanguay has very limited value.
He had limited value when the Flames signed him and it was dumb to give him such a long term contract. They'd have been better off with bigger dollars and shorter term.
Many on this board hated the signing, because they saw Tanguay for what he is, a very skilled, but equally moody and inconsistent supplementary winger. He's a good supplementary piece especially when you have a stacked team like when he won the Cup with the Avs, but he can't be counted on to be a leader, the Avs knew this and traded him.
It's stupid of Feaster to be mad at Tanguay at the exit interviews, because Tanguay did exactly what he signed for. Tanguay didn't lie to Feaster about what he was going to be. He was never going to be a consistent player or leader on this team, and to get mad at him for being himself was stupid of Feaster.
Just another boneheaded decision by a GM who doesn't really understand the game.

I have no problem keeping Tanguay if we don't get value in return. He's a good player.

Yes, not the smartest signing as his contract term should have tied to Iggy's. But he's still an offensive contributor and there will be a market. We will have to take a contract back but can probably get a prospect or pick back depending on the player we take in return. Going to post some potential players on bad contracts that we can swap for Tangs as do not want to derail thread.

^^^ that would make for a great thread, IMO... That's exactly what Tanguay should be used for...
... Traded to a good team with cap issues...
Tanguay for a bad contract and a high pick.

I just hope that the Flames end up with 6 or 7 picks in the top 75. We could completely replenish our entire prospect pool just from that alone.

As of now, they have 4 picks in that range, correct?

Yup. If we want more then most likely both Tangs and Cammy will have to go.

it's not just the Combine video's or lack there of. The Flames site is notoriously slow to update information. Look at their scout's page for example. No mention of David Volek, Steve Pleau, Rob Sumner, Jim Cummins, and a couple others I can't remember, even though they've been with the Flames for over 2 years.
It took them a year to get Weisbrod listed in their Hockey ops. Ron Sutter has been with the Flames Hockey Ops for over a decade, currently Director of player development?, but no mention of him. This is just scratching the surface.

Yes. I'm not opposed to moving down from Pittsburgh's pick down into the second round provided we get two picks, and I would have open season on mostly any veteran player to see if we could get any more picks. From what I've seen of the prospects in this draft, the ones that would be normally mid 2nd round calibre stretch all the way into the 70's.

I am hoping the flames pick Lindholm, but I don't see the flames passing on Monohan if he's available.
Also it appears Lindholm's standing at 6''0 '1/2. Does anyone know how much he weighed at the combine?

I've seen reports of his weight ranging anywhere between 185 and 192. So good size for his age.

Is a good player or was a good player? Last year he played lazy, uninspired hockey for the most part. We need to move this guy if at all possible.

Looks like we already need an auto-correct to change Monohan into Monahan.
