The difference between Wills & Mayer is that however Peter chose to communicate his opinion he still did it in ways that were insightful, even if not overly critical. He did have the advantage of drawing on nostalgic comparisons from a nearly a decade of when the franchise was dominant, and not merely competent.
Wills is not only void of insight, he only bleeds trust and validity in his word/opinion when he regurgitates overtly non-critical delusional propaganda about the organization.
Fans may be passionate or overly critical but they aren’t stupid.
There is a reason he no longer continues the tradition of a morning segment that Peter Mayer started.
His point of view is irrelevant.

Wills is the biggest homer this side of the pacos, I cant listen to him. I know with cost cuts he is doing PBP from a TV sometimes but the amount of time he wrecks a goal call is astounding. In that being said I dont have as huge of issue with his call of the game moreso his theatrics in press conferences and on the hot stove lounge. If there is a glass half full guy his picture should be the definition. It gets sickening at times.

Maher had been an NHL pro for years versus Wills, who IIRC had an AHL gig. Sutter just has no time for vapid questions. And in fact I don’t recall Maher being a press conference guy anyway.
The thing with Peter Maher is that he wasn’t expected to be an “analyst” and offer insights and analysis on the club all that often. He was PBP first and foremost.
I guess because of cost cuts or whatever, Wills has to do radio shows where he is asked all these questions about his opinions on the club. His lack of insight and homerism gets brutally exposed. If he could just do PBP with an occasional interview it would be better.
Rick Ball doesn’t have to talk for an hour a day about the state of the Flames.

I think he also stinks as a PBP guy

Willis isn't just a homer. He intentionally and adamantly defends any players and personnel who: are performing terribly, are overpaid, or have shown nothing.
Then when these players/personnel finally do something right, Willis takes the opportunity to tell the fans that he told them so.
As a fan, I'm not overly interested in a Willis's attempts to spite us.
FWIW I think Willis intentional stakes out the 'glass half full guy' on purpose on the Panel. For better or worse that's the angle he's chosen to bring to the discussion. I remember before the Flames started pushing for the WC he was even admitting it was likely over. But then as soon as they started pushing it was back to the classic MO.

Try listening to that moron in Edmonton with his homer buddy Debrusk. Or try the Canucks or leafs guys for a while. They are horrendously hard to listen to due to their homerism and voices. Then come back and tell me we have it tough with Wills. It could be much much worse.

The problem I have with Wills is his very predictable and repetitive voice tone cadence. There's just something about it (especially in PBP) that rubs me the wrong way.

At least I don't have to listen to Wills say Brad Trelaving anymore.

Yeah IMO it is extremely unprofessional to mispronounce names in an occupation where your primary responsibilities include not screwing names up with countless people tuning in. Not even managing to get the GM's name correct is just pure laziness.
Even Beasley went and met with the broadcasters pregame to get clarity on the pronunciations of certain names (think it may have been Kostitsyn's during the clip I watched).

"Take that Calgary Puck!" — SN960 and Calgary sports media discussion
I had no idea this thread existed… and boy do I hate what the Fan 960 has become.
In Edmonton, they have 12 hours a day of original content on TSN1260
Why subscribe to SN960’s podcast when they’ll just force their “original” content down your throat four or five times over the next 48 hours. Replaying the Flames call-in show at 12:30 in the afternoon is beyond lazy.
Russic and the morning show is still giving off substitute teacher vibes. The whole “The ______ is so ______ I ______” is a dead horse that has been beaten far too long.
They apparently aren’t familiar with the “save Public radio” campaign that boasts how “radio is the most reliable Place for live coverage” because several hours a day is just curated pre-recorded podcasts.
The lack of coverage for the other sports teams not named the flames is abysmal. With the amount of rerun content they are playing There is plenty of time in the day where they could be providing coverage for the Wranglers & Cavalry FC.
I can’t wait to hear more reruns of the morning show talking about “weird food combinations” instead of broadcasting wrangler playoff games.

Really? His goal calls are kind of lame and he has a bad habit of using 10 words when 3 will do. For example, most people would just say playoffs in everyday conversation, but Wills will refer to them as the 2023 NHL Stanley Cup Playoffs. But that doesn't happen in PBP that often.
But I kind of think he describes the action OK, especially when he doesn't have to call from a monitor.

He makes sure he tells everyone as often as possible he is calling from a monitor, in hopes he can start going on road trips again. The only time the monitor effects his call is when something happens behind the play. Which in reality isn't actually affecting the play other than if a penalty is being called. It may be a little harder to anticipate what is going to happen, or perhaps know who is ahead of the play that is going to receive a pass, but IMO if he wasn't telling me he was calling from a monitor I would have no idea when I am listening on the radio.
He also consistently reminds everyone he doesn't have the same feel for what is going on around the team as he isn't around them on the road.
He drives me nuts, I don't actually mind listening when he is calling the play. However, anytime he is talking with Lou, or any of his hits on the radio I just want to turn the station. Usually I only listen to him on the drive home, and I like listening to Steinberg/Wes/Pyke so I put up with Wills on the round table.
That morning show however, I have not been able to go more then 5 minutes before changing the channel. I used to listen and stream it all day at work, now I just turn it on when Pat is on.
