This stance is no less stupid than the idea that Gio is completely over the hill.
The reality is we did see Gio regress last season, and it has all the hallmarks of real age regression. His upper body injuries have compounded to completely rob him of his heavy shot, and he is losing speed and quick turning ability. His useful playing life can be extended by not trying to over play him, not really by sheltering him but by helpfully limiting his minutes so he can choose his spots better.
Not recognizing that age affects all players by being blinded by past success is a sure way to make a heinous mistake asset management wise.

Do the Flames have any more cap space to sign a player? For the taxi squad etc.

Not really, but you gotta think they'd like to add a veteran depth D man on a 2 way for the taxi squad. That being said, not sure how many players near retirement would be down to be bag skated day after day for an AHL salary.

I doubt Vatanen has any interest in a taxi squad gig.
My expectation is we're looking at a Stone/Bowey/Goloubef-type depth add.

Vatanen will probably go to the Oilers, with Klefbom out for the year....

Treliving likes his Canucks, maybe Ben Hutton for defenceman depth

If Vatanen wants to play in Calgary for cheap, he doesn't need to be on the taxi squad.
Giordano
Andersson
Hanifin
Tanev
Valimaki
Vatanen
That is a pretty solid top six. Or a very good replacement for Hanifin if he ends up getting traded.
Then Kylington, Yelesin, Nesterov, and Mackey can be part of the taxi squad.
But.. I doubt Vatanen signs with Calgary.

Vatanen isn't very good anymore, particularly not in his own zone. I think Kylington has a good chance of being better as soon as this year (last year, he was better defensively).

If you sign a player to a one-way at league minimum, you can bury his whole contract in the AHL. I assume the same would be true for the taxi squad, would it not?

With Bear, Barrie and Larson all as RHD I highly doubt it. This LTIR space from Klefbom lets the Oil get a deal with Bear done

Correct as per BT on the radio the other day, the taxi squad is part of the ahl team for the purpose of contracts. I believe Friedman said the money you can bury in the minors will be 1.075

Not a rumour but on the latest Spittin Chiclets Sandbaggar Invitational, Ryan Whitney asks Kevin Hayes when Gaudreau is getting traded to the Flyers.

I honestly wonder if JG to Philadelphia is what he would actually want.
I don’t think it would be a stretch to think that if Gaudreau puts up 0 ES playoff points in his beloved hometown that the fans wouldn’t turn on him in a matter of a period, or two. Little known secret; Philadelphia fans aren’t very forgiving.
If there’s truth behind all the smoke between Gaudreau and the Flyers then good luck to you, Johnny. I’ll grab a bowl of popcorn and just wait to see what happens in this match made in heaven....What could ever go wrong?

Not flames related but an actual rumor from Shawn Simpson from tsn1200
Hearing Yotes and Sens are talking. #Stepan Has one year left of a cap hit at 6.5, but actual salary of 5. @TSN1200
Speculation Anisimov may be the piece heading back.

Yotes probably want some cap because they're cutting costs and somehow over the dang cap by $3.47M (although once Hossa goes on LTIR, they have $1.84M in cap-space).
How that team is in the cap situation it is...baffling.

Chayka boned them and left. He almost left as much damage done to AZ as Chia did to Edmonton.
