McDonagh, Cernac and Sheary gets them close to signing Draisatl. They can use draft picks to get rid of 1 year contracts on all of them.

Almost every other team in the league has an easier road to clearing that much cap space. I don't see TB in the mix at all.

Draisaitl is going to LA. It's pretty clear. He will take Kopitars spot and Kopitar will sign a retirement 2 year contract at a discount.

Draisaitl is going to LA or NYR, my bet is Draisaitl to LA. McDavid will be TOR or NYR with my bet on Toronto.

I'm assured it is happening any minute.

Either way, I think it’s a win/win for the E=NG movement.
Even though his style of play should age well, a re-sign means he’s gonna eat up a ton of their cap. Add McDavid and the BBomb, and they’re in cap hell for the first half of the contract.
Being ‘leading contenders’ for the cup, means they won’t trade him. Not many top heavy teams get to the finals back to back. Walking him to free agency, with no cup, would be quite the fun ride too.

This is the ideal path forward. No assets back, have to overpay UFA's to try and fill the hole, no prospects in the pipeline. Will they trade McDavid if he enters his last year without a contract? Would he sign if Drai just walked as a UFA? The organization would be in shambles like they deserve.

Even if they do the smart thing, and trade McDavid, it will be tough to get a huge haul.
Not that he’s not worth a ton, but as a rental, top teams with cap space tend to not have the deepest prospect pool, or high draft picks.
If it was a team he would sign with, I’d think the list of places he wants to go, with a top tier prospect pool, that is at least on the cusp, is incredibly small.

The media and fans are going to be insufferable all year long if Draisaitl doesn't sign before camp. What are the odds of him staying if there's no extension in place by then? Has be less than 10%. Imagine him (or McDavid next season) going anywhere in public or before the media. I'm sure it'll be fun when all those smelly drunks come up and hassle him in public.

I wonder if any teams have made an offer for a sign and trade?
If he isn’t signed by the start of the season, what a fantastic distraction!

There would be no reason to do that. Any team that traded for him could sign him to an 8-year contract extension.

Edmonton really has no choice other than to open the vault for them both and they are stuck because Draisaitl is first up. They have to overpay. And then it’s just up to the players to decide if they even want to stay for all of the other reasons. It’s gonna be 15 and 18M and it’s going to hamstring them.

McDavids contract is going to be brutal. His game will not age well when he slows down. I think seeing John Tavares and how he looks now gives a window into what McDavid will be like in the future

John Tavaras was never as good as McDavid and still put up 30 goals and 80 points last year. When/if McDavid slows down he'll still be a solid contributor as his playmaking ability will still be elite.

I could see McDavid being well under 100 pt mark within 5 yrs or less.

Even if McDavid lost a step he would still be amongst the fastest skaters in the NHL. I feel he's going to be a high producing player well into his 30's. Draisaitl on the other hand can't afford to lose a step and if/when he does will end his career as a powerplay guy.

At the risk of placing any resemblance of praise on a couple No Goods…
Draisaitl’s game is already pretty slow. Not saying he is slow, but he is most effective when he slows the game down. Age doesn’t really affect strength on the puck.
The speed at which McDavid coordinates his decision making, hands and feet is unearthly. It is also the cornerstone of his dominance 🤮. Regression there will impact his game a lot.

There are guys that overcome their loss of speed. Teemu Selanne comes to mind. I agree that Pissy looks more likely to keep it going into his later years, although mounting injury problems aren't out of the question with his history and continued overuse.

Didn't he once say that the Lockout was the best thing that happened to his career so he could re-invent his game?
Ovechkin is another good example, there was that one season where he looked washed up but somehow now he's as effective as ever.
With McDavid, who knows? But in all sports, when you rely a lot on Speed, its usually the first thing to go as a player ages.
