Because they have the best D in the league and can afford to move him out for someone who fits a need for that team (#1 C).

yeah, S. Jones is awesome.
But Nashville is sort of an abundance of riches in that department, so if you can shore up a potential franchise #1C. Then maybe you do it.
Assuming that last year was the Johansen you get, not this years version.

Nashville is a defenceman factory.
They rarely have to opportunity to draft #1 centers at the top of the draft. They are limited by budget, so the rare time a #1 center comes up in UFA is overpriced and out of their reach.
Their only option is to trade for a #1 center.

Josi - Weber
Ekholm - Ellis
That is one of the best top 4 D groups in the league.
They are also a good age (26.25 average) and all locked up for multiple years at a manageable amount.
I would be happy to trade Jones in that case, especially for a top line center who is still at the beginning of his prime.

Darren Dreger @DarrenDreger
In studio @NHLonNBCSports for Pens/Hawks. Pittsburgh still in trade hunt. Looking for another d-man and forward if right fit available.
Jeremy Rutherford @jprutherford
Tampa Bay still keeping an eye on the Blues. Lightning assistant GM Pat Verbeek taking in another game here tonight in Denver. #stlblues

Makes me wonder if a Shattenkirk for Drouin deal might be in the works.

Isn't Shattenkirk a UFA this summer? Seems like a lot to give up for a potential rental

What are the chances Pietrangelo is dealt? Is he still considered a top 10 defenseman? I believe he was 2nd in Norris voting his 2nd season in the league.

The other factor here is cost.
Jones is going to be a 4-5 million dollar player and maybe more at the end of the year.
Nashville already has Josi at 4, Ekholm at 3.75 and Ellis at 2.5, all for 4 years or more. With Weber still in the front loaded years of his crazy 7.8 million cap hit contract, there's no room for a 5.75 million Jones at the end of the year.
5.5 or 6 for a #1C doesn't break their cap structure.

He's signed through next season then UFA.
I remember Statsny's dad bitching because the Avs traded a 22 year old Chris Stewart ,along with Shattenkirk, coming off a 64 point season to the Blues for Eric Johnson.
It still seems like a loss for the Avs but now because of Shattenkirk, who wasn't considered a throw in, but was far from the central "piece" Stewart was perceived to be.

Could you not get Shattenkirk to agree to an extension before the trade is made.

With all those cases ntracts cming up (Stamkos, Hedmen, Kucherov, Johnson, Palat) coming up in the next coup,e years would they want to pay Shattenkirk the $6M+ it probably takes to keep him?

Some speculation out there that the Flyers are going to chase Stamkos in the offseason with their new found cap space.

That idea sounds doomed. How often does that plan work for them??? He's a great player, but I have a strong feeling that he's not as good as Philly will pay.

If he asks for that. But if he pots 15-20 in the 2nd half of this season and is on course for another 20-30 next season, why won't he do exactly what he did in Columbus and demand silly money that they won't be able to stretch to?

i posted this in the jones for johansen trade thread but i'll repost it here, we just lose sight of how far ahead of the game the flames organization is. we just aren't desperate enough for young talent, to meet the drouin asking price.

here are the ages and numbers for these two young blue chip players involved today:
seth jones: 21yrs 199gp 63pts
ryan johansen: 23yrs 309gp 193pts
you would be lucky to have either player on your team
now look at our young core:
dougie hamilton: 22yrs 217gp 97pts
sean monahan: 21yrs 195gp 122pts
johnny gaudreau: 22yrs 120gp 104pts
factor in bennett and brodie and this roster doesn't need to continue to add to it's core. these are the guys. i hope we don't see a blockbuster flames trade this year, as exciting as it can be.

Aaron Portzline @Aportzline
Hearing rumblings that #NYR have called, yet again, regarding #CBJ RW Cam Atkinson, who has quickly become a favorite of John Tortorella.

We really need to get one of Hayes and/or Rychel. I think the flurry of activity yesterday is going to start something and BT should be talking to everyone while they're still "antsy"

I think so too. Unfortunately, the piece moving (Hudler) is injured.
I think him cleared to play is going to hinge a pending trade here.
