You gotta sell high, that's what Tre did. It's like when I sold Shopify at $82.

He had 6 pts in his last 6, and his final game was 2 pts vs Edmonton

The guy simply wanted a chance and it seems Sutter understood what he had in the player more than Treliving's hand picked coaches that basically wasted the prime years of that core.

Except Sutter didn't do anything different with Bennett than Ward had. He was still playing bottom six wing.

I recall Sutter moving him up at times. Clearly between that and what was going on in the locker room and practice under Darryl, Bennett had a boost of confidence and change of heart. Sutter (when he wasn't unhinged) knew how to handle players better than the average coach.

He healthy scratched him and played him mainly on Derek Ryan's wing. Which Sutter probably thought was great because he loved Derek Ryan.

Why did Bennett take his trade request back then? Neither of us are in the room but obviously something changed. When Sutter wants to communicate he's excellent at it

I'm sure he wanted to play for Sutter. But frankly having a trade request and then yanking it doesn't sit well with me anyway. Especially when the new coach is doing exactly what the old coach did.

Calgary made big mistakes developing Bennett. But no one seems to put any onus on Bennett to (a) play better within the role and (b) make the most of what time he had when given what he wanted. I think that Florida gave him a better chance to succeed for sure. But that's pretty typical - Calgary did the same with Lindholm. I also think that Bennett probably figured that he had to up his game after the trade, which he finally did.

Sutter had like a month with Bennett. It would've been a match made in heaven if it wasn't for the disastrous handling and development for years.

Sutter may have matched well with Bennett. But we also know that bennett has traits Sutter disliked as well. So who knows. Plus Sutter was gone in a year anyway.

God, this again? When given what he wanted?

He is a C. They put him in a blender, bottom 6 W mainly, and only gave him looks at C on the 4th line. The linemate TOI data has been shown. It’s laughable

Sure, blame him if it fills your boots. Nobody is going to be their best with uncertainty about their role and no consistency in their job. The reality is, Florida simply gave him a job, said go, and profited

I’m glad there is a game tonight because this 2 day gap has felt long

Although it is fun I suppose to have an extra day for the greasers to stew in their embarrassment. Oh wait. Never mind. They have no self awareness

Hopefully Benny and the Cats clap those dirt bags again

Bennett isn't capable of "playing better within the role". I know people think he's the second coming right now, but this year was his best season ever at 51 points. The Flames threw him into a bottom six role and expected him to elevate scrubs. He's not capable of doing that.

Bennett needs to be given the best opportunities to succeed and play with guys who are going to let him succeed. Florida is giving Bennett high end linemates, 60% o-zone starts, and not using him at all on the PK.

The Flames, after seeing he didn't have high end hockey IQ, were trying to groom Bennett into a two-way mid-six guy like Backlund. Bennett eventually got fed up of being a square peg being forced into round hole and demanded out.

Sutter only healthy scratched him because he played the exact same lineup from the game before when he wasn’t the coach.

Sutter was gone 2.5 years later not a year. Bennett said he was able to get some clear direction from Sutter and enjoyed playing for him.

Some people are still hung up on blaming Bennett and I don’t get it

Fact is he was never given consistent linemates and rarely played at his natural position

The GM is the guy who ruined the Flames and is now thankfully ruining the Leafs
The coaches were all duds selected by him

He went somewhere where he was played at his position with consistent linemates and fluorished

The underachievers running the Flames recognized his low hockey IQ, according to the guy a few posts up, but he is leading the entire playoffs in goals this year

Why are people putting effort in to talking the guy down? Defending the Flames regime that squandered Tkachuk, let Johnny walk, traded a first to get rid of Monahan, and simply couldn’t figure out the 2 piece puzzle that would get value out of Bennett

It is just weird at this point

I think you're referring to me, as the low hockey IQ comment poster.

i agree with you 100%. The organization did not play Bennett to his strengths. As for Bennett having a low hockey IQ, scoring lots of goals does not mean you have a high hockey IQ. There have been guys who led the league in goals, who were totally unskilled in other aspects besides goal scoring.
