After waiting for so long my wife and I finally caught Top Gun: Maverick in the theatre. I normally fall asleep for 10-15 minutes in movies but for this one I was wide awake. It was a really great movie. The action/flying sequences were great and it was just a fun movie. Personal things aside, I still enjoy movies starring Tom Cruise. I do strongly recommend that you see this in the theatre vs waiting for it to watch it at home - definitely worthy of the theatre experience.

Well I have it on blu ray but never actually seen it, maybe I'll give it a watch this week
Commando is peak 80's action, and Arny was the king, so it pretty much makes this the pinnacle. The cheesy lines are incredible, and the final action scenes are so over the top, you can't help but grin all the way through it. You really should watch it. It's great.

1. Predator (Dillon! You son of a batch!)
2. Conans, also red Sonja in this.
3. Terminators
4. End of Days (Gabriel Byrne as the 2nd best Satan on film)
5. Kindergarten Cop (It's not a tumor!)
6. Total Recall (Sharon Stone...)
7. Running Man
8. True lies
9. Last Action Hero
10. Jingle all the way

Watched Fresh last night. Didn't know a ton about it. Started out feeling like a bit of a Rom Com then took a very dark turn. It was kinda weird but was a fun watch. I recommend and give it a solid 7/10.
Watched The Black Phone tonight. It was pretty good. Simple movie based on a short story written by Stephen King’s son. It’s sufficiently creepy throughout.

We watched it with the gf couple of days ago, we both thought it was quite bad.
Hamfisted "feminism", mediocre acting, writing had serious credibility issues (psychology of the characters was iffy, and for that idea they really should have consulted someone who knows about anatomy, and someone who knows meat). The movie also kept reminding of much better movies, like The Perfection and American Psycho among others, but in that shallow way where you copy the surface level but not the meaning.
Easily among the worst movies I've seen this year. 2/5.
I thought Fresh was decent especially when you consider how bad a lot of horror movies are these days. Not a classic but I thought the twist was good and the acting was better than average for a horror movie.
On the topic of bad horror movies I saw the remake of Candyman and I don't understand how it sits at 84% on RT. It managed to be worse than the original which was by no means a classic. Unlike Us and Get Out, the core movie itself is not good enough to complement race and politics angle. It's generic, disjointed and doesn't make a lot of sense. They could have done so much better.
The horror movie X starts off pretty well with it's 70's timeline and amateur porn stars renting a guest house but goes off the rails in the 2nd half with one of the worst horror movie villains ever. This one is a miss for A24.

Hmm, funny, personally I think this is a pretty decent era for horror, if you just know what to look for. I watch quite a lot of horror and while most of them fall short of being movies I'd actively recommend, very few are bad enough to anti-recommend, and most at least have some interesting ideas. Lots of horror movies have pretty decent acting IMO, when you steer away from the serialized stuff, copycats and other obviously "factory line" stuff.
But for the record, I want to emphasize that the acting in Fresh isn't IMO bad. It's just a bit mediocre, doesn't drag it down but does nothing to save it either.
BTW I'm very much with on you on "X". There was a lot of potential with the characters, but when the killing started the movie just became fairly boring.
EDIT:
Also to be fair to "Fresh", just because it's probably for me the worst movie I've seen this year so far, I haven't seen any real stinkers yet.
Watched the first Police Academy movie, I enjoyed it laughed harder than I thought I would. I'm on a 80s comedy kick next up the highest grossing movie of 1987....... 3 men and a baby.
You should post your list of unwatched 80s comedies and we can help you pick what to watch. 3 Men and a Baby would likely be low on the list, despite its box office.
Rewatched Excalibur last night. The storytelling is a bit of a mess at times, but it looks beautiful and the cast is excellent. Still holds up after 40(!) years.

I watched the first Back to the Future the other day. It still holds up as an entertaining film. Michael J Fox, nailed that role so perfectly.
I'm not going to bother to watch #2 and 3. Haven't seen them since they first came out and have no interest in watching them now.
If you're doing Steve Guttenberg movies, you should watch Cocoon, if you haven't seen it.

I can't think any 80s comedy that's held up as well as Planes, Trains and Automobiles
