Thought I’d wander over to a thread where there is absolutely NO debate or speculation.
Fact: EDMONTON IS NO GOOD.
(Apologies for this refreshing taste of reality.)

As I like to say when people use that cliche, ‘There is no I in TEAM, but there is a U in DUMB!’
That said, I have long held the opinion that the only C on McDavid's jersey should be the one on his back.

The pacific sucking is hiding how bad the Oilers actually are...media and fans around the league still think they are a top team. They are exactly the same as the Leafs.

They had a bit of pop a couple of weeks ago when Hyman came back but otherwise have been a mid team at best with one guy playing out of his mind.
Awful reffing is responsible for about 3-4 of their wins early on. So they're essentially a .500 team while being in the worst division.
Playing in any of the other 3 would expose them even more
As the stats back up, the derpth is the worst its been in the mcdavid era as well.
McDonkey was foolish to give them any more years. Must be like pulling nails trying to get the rest of the group to pull its weight night after night.
Goaltending is worse than when Skinner was there too at least he stayed healthy.

Dude could have signed with just about any legit contender in the league, as I'm sure any of those teams would have likely found a way to make room for him. Instead he chose to waste 2 more years of his prime with this tire fire of an Oilers team because he feels he owes them or something? Lol, what a f'n dumbass.
If they end up getting bounced in this year's playoffs (and they will), I wouldn't be surprised if he finally comes to his senses and demands a trade this summer. Any idiot can see that he won't win a championship if he stays in Dumpsterville.

Here's hoping Colorado steamrolls through the west this year, I dont want to see them faulter in the first/second round and let the Oilers cakewalk to the finals again.

I actually think he signed for 2 more years to have an easy life. Plays as many minutes as he wants, calls the shots, doesn't have to back check to often, gets to cherry pick his points, he's the man in EDM.
Now put him on any other team, where he has to play a team game, normal minutes, defensive responsibilities as a C. Suddenly he becomes exposed as the one dimensional player that he is.
He like to be the leader but without the effort required to help the team.

He also knows he won't be compared to the all time greats without a cup in Edmonton...it was a bad call but he isn't very smart. Like he thought saving them cap would get them that extra player for that extra win but the savings just goes to keeping Wallman/Fredrick while losing Perry and Kane who were top 5 forwards on the last run.

Knoblauch seems to be sending a message to veterans Andrew Mangiapane and Trent Frederic, both of whom appear set to be healthy scratches on Tuesday night alongside rookie Quinn Hutson.

That's a lot of money sitting in the press box, plus popcorn ain't as cheap as it once was.

I've heard some hope that if Frederic is scratched often enough he will soon request a trade. yes I'm sure there are all kinds of GMs salivating at taking on that 8 year deal

Better the devil you know than the one you don't?
You could be right. Coming out of his comfort zone of coach veto privileges and into a team-first environment may actually be a rude awakening.
I think he got a taste for that at 4 Nations where there were players as good or better than him skill-wise, Crosby-Mackinnon were the defacto top line, and he didnt get his 25+ minutes with full PPs. Maybe he went home from that and thought he'd like to be the king of the tire fire a little longer.

If I was him, I'd signed with any real contender with that AAV for 2 years instead. At least there is a chance to hoist the Cup.

And I'm sure Frederic doesn't care either. What message exactly are they trying to send?
Play better, or we will still pay you for 8 years AND give you nights off work! Or, we will send you to a much better city and they will pay you for 8 years!
That'll learn him

McDavid gave them about a $6M discount and they've turned that into:
Frederic: 8 x $3.85M
Mangiapane: 2 x $3.6M
Podkolzin: 3 x $2.95M

Puts me in mind of one of my favourite bits of dialogue from Victor/Victoria:
‘If you ever come back, I will have you thrown out!’
‘Don't make it sound like such a threat. Being thrown out of a place like this is significantly better than being thrown out of a leper colony.’

With all the cheap and talented depth they have it's not really too big an issue.

Don't forget the $7M per year for 7 years deal they inexplicably gave a 29 year old Jake Walman that will take him until he's 37.
They completely blew the "savings" Connor gifted them with his extension and then some.

The problem is the current playoff format greatly benefits the top teams in bad divisions like the Pacific. If the playoffs started today, the Oilers would get the Ducks and the Stars would face the Wild basically eliminating the 3rd best team in the conference in the first round while the Oilers get another easy first round opponent. The format is simply terrible and it's played a role in the Oilers getting to the last two Stanley Cup finals.

Gotta hope the oilers can fall into a wildcard spot and have to get through 2 central teams.
Hopefully Seattle can continue their solid play and at least get a point tonight. I'll still be cheering for the Flames to win though

agree. though right now its a bit wide open. the pacific is mediocre but bunched up
by point percentage (given how many more games some teams have played), I think right now its
Col- LA
Dal- Min
Veg-Edm
Ana- Sea (wtf? !?)
its all sort of depressing as I want both the Oil and Knights to fail (for different reasons) but have no real faith in the the Kings, or the Ducks (in 2026) or Kraken to do anything about it
and what's the deal with Utah- one of only 4 teams in the whole conference with a positive goal differential, but not getting the points, hopefully they can insert themselves
