Yup, way ahead of the curve with his deals for Callahan, Filppula and Carle.

I mean when young controllable talent is rumored to be wanting out of (or unhappy with) their current situation (Drouin, Rychel, Haynes, Hamonic) then that's the kind of buying I can get behind. Sure it would suck if we couldn't get a standard payout on Hudler/Russell
|
Not to mention Flames have pretty good bottom six, bottom pairing talent in the AHL.
Agostino and Grant could probably fill in nice in the bottom six, and I have to think Arnold > Stajan.
BVB seems to be doing well too, Bollig replacement?
And Nakladal is NHL ready.
So even if Hudler/Russell and some of the other vets only return picks, that should be OK too.

I'm all for trades that make sense at any time. At the deadline though teams are usually exchanging UFA's and picks. I don't really see the point in us buying UFA's at the expense of futures. If we can unload some UFA's though I'm on board with that. If we can make a hockey trade even better but those seem a lot tougher to actually make. Teams probably prefer the off season for that. I don't think the market for quality talent changes at the deadline which are the guys you are mentioning. More so the UFA's.

Have you looked at the Lightnings roster? Yzerman has handed-out some terrible deals like Callaghan and Carle.

Have to wonder if there is not a TBL and CBJ deal possible.
If the Lightning lose Stamkos they need a replacement center.
Is there a potential Drouin + for Johansen deal that would work for both teams?
A big center is worth more than a small winger so Lightning would have to add to the deal to make it balanced?
Building on that. What is the value of the Flames 2016 #1 pick?
Risk/reward type deal because Flames could end up picking top five, or maybe not till middle of the pack if they make the playoffs.
Assuming that there is deal that brings Drouin to Columbus.
Is there a possible deal that would see the Flames #1 pick this year go to Columbus for Drouin and Rychel?
Might have to balance for contracts to keep teams under the limit.
But what is the hockey value of the pick and two players in a deal like this?

I don't see a fit for RyJo in Columbus, I think their biggest need is top 4 D and the BJ's don't really have that to spare. I also think Tampa is going to want to cut bait on some big contracts to go with Drouin and I don't think the jackets will be in for that.
As much as I'd love Drouin on the Flames, I don't think it'll be worth it for the Flames to give up those assets (especially a first rounder that could easily be top 3, and this draft seems fairly deep IMO).
The Flames need to target a big RW who can play on the top line. I don't see anyone who fits that mold being available other than in the draft.

Do they all have actual, legitimate chances of taking those spots? Maybe it's years of late 90's early 2000's jadedness, but I can't imagine we have that many prospects who will flourish at the NHL level. Nightmares of Tim Ramholt, Jamie Tardif, David Van Der Gulik, Andrei Taratukhin/Medvedev, Levente Szuper...

I had no clue Gomer Pyle played for the rangers...
Surprise, suprise, suprise!
Hayes could be worth it depending on what the rangers are asking but has he really shown anything that makes him a legit top line RW? Although he'd likely be our best option right now...

Flames have a surplus of bottom pair D and bottom 6 forwards. This is also where they have too much salary invested. They need a big RW, goaltending, and any other players should have top 6 upside.
Problem is, to make meaningful trades, they need to dump salary, which they can't do if working with the Rangers on Hayes or Columbus with Rychel. Makes it hard to make changes in the season.

I think the Flames need 2 top 6 forwards. Someone who can play wing or centre on Bennetts line and someone to play with Monahan and Gaudreau.

respectfully disagree, maybe it's just that i remember too clearly the days of Iggy and the rest, but i love the glut of young talent on this team and i think we are in damned fine shape moving forward.
once Bennett develops into a #2 centre i think we are laughing, the biggest 'need' for this team is time IMO

@TSN1040: Benning on taking trade calls, "There's not a lot going on in the league right now. I've never seen a year like this."

Summary:
If Lightning had a deal they liked for Drouin, he would be gone.
Yzerman likely will be methodical in moving Drouin
Marleau's trade request will likely go away
Hextall hinted there is a trade possibility for Sam Gagner
No one wants to take on his full salary
Some thought the Capitals might look at Byfuglien with Orpik's health uncertain
But moot now that Orpik is back
Panthers may take a run at Byfuglien
Panthers want to sign Barkov to a 6-8 year deal
Arizona is looking for a taker for Steve Downie
Jared Cowen is in the penthouse of Dave Cameron's doughouse
Murray has been reluctant to move Cowen before, but situation may be coming to head
John-Michael Liles could be an under the radar rental acquisition for a playoff team

Hayes had an unreal rookie season so if we could get him at a reasonable price to replace Jiri that would be pretty awesome. I'm sure he would be much more willing to come to Calgary now that this team looks like its heading in the right direction. At the time he signed I think most people including myself thought this team would be bottom 5 and not climbing up the standings any time soon.

That's cause all you have left to trade is the Sedin girls so no one is calling you.
