Easy Company's war basically took place over 1 calendar year.

The 1st Marine Division was continually at war for 3 years.

But I also think the battles were a lot more different. The battles in the Pacific lasted an extremely long time, and there were a lot of them so I don't see how else they could have done it. Unless they were to just focus on Iwo Jima or some other really big battles. That said, I get your point. I had to read up on the battles to truly appreciate what happened there. Maybe a synopsis or something would be better

IIRC, Curahee is about 70 minutes on the DVD, and the others are around 53 to 60 minutes.

or they could have just done what BoB did, and give a little text synopsis at the end explaining the significance of what you just watched. such a small thing, but it would make a huge difference

As everyone has already said, most of which I agree with, my biggest problem is the same as nik-'s. How can BoB be so perfect, and then The Pacific be so brutal (in some cases). The time line is totally wacky, the episodes are way to short (I mentioned this back on the first few pages before everyone! ). The 40-45 minutes they a lot to each episode just isn't enough to sell a "mini-series" it seems just like normal television.

The battle scenes seem like such a waste, because they are so well done and the landscape is so well done, but the story arch's and characters are so damn bland.

Ah well, going to go watch Saving Private Ryan now on Blu-Ray.

My only hope for the Pacific, is if they have a 15-20hr special edition Blu-ray.

Otherwise it will be a very good series, but truly not even in the same breath as BoB.

Hopefully for the Blu-Ray release, which comes out in like a month by the way, will have like a 2 hour special on the "creating of...".

Also I hope all the episodes have a Directors cut which adds 10 minutes to each episode.

I really enjoyed the initial episodes of the series. Capitvating, visually appealing, it was awesome. To me, it kind of tapered off once Sledgehammer was introduced. It felt as if we were force-fed these new characters, and certain character interactions were a little overdone.

All in all though, a great series.

I feel that the series is being shown through the eyes of the Marines. They are trying to portray to the viewer what their experience was. What they were thinking, what they saw, what they knew about the enemy or the battles they were participating in. How combat changed their lives (in a hurry). If they give narration or text to explain everything it would take part of that element away.

I am still really enjoying this series, for reasons posted above. My Grandpa always tried to describe the Pacific war to me but I just couldn't grasp it.

"Incredibly beautiful sunsets on your face, endless destruction at your back. Turn around to keep your sanity." was a popular saying among the RAF in the Pacific front.

There was two sides to the coin, here you are in a mini paradise, as we see the soldiers in, then you turn around and its just an illusion... all you have around you is destruction and death.

The main problem between the two series, is the calibre of acting. The only actor in my opinion that suits his character, and the actual time of the war is Lecky. The rest don't seem right for the 1940's.

BOB's actors were a bit older than these actors, but they were able to pull it off a bit easier that they were from then. I mean the actor that plays Snafu seems like he's a guy who's very interested street ball in real life, attitude and all. It's hard to take him seriously in a series about the pacific....

Not even close in my opinion.

I came across this site last night that does a nice job of laying out the battle of Guadalcanal. Below the video and write-up are some nice profiles on the three main characters in The Pacific.

I wish we had the American version of The History Channel.

Are you confusing the interesting history of the actual war in the Pacific with the poor quality of this miniseries?

Nope. I think the series is doing a really good job telling the interesting history of war in the Pacific. Obviously some people don't, and that's ok. Comparing it to Pearl Harbour was a nutty statement though.

I added the link because I thought other people may be interested in it.

If you don't get The Pacific thats fine. All arguments aside, the quality is anything but poor.

Production Quality = High ($500M high)

Entertainment Quality = Sub-par to expectations

I 'get' The Pacific just fine. The quality of the writing, the acting, the character development, the chemistry between characters, the overall presentation, etc. are all poor, IMO.

I don't even think you need to qualify that by saying the entertainment value is sub-par to expectations. I think it's just sub-par.

I love this saying it applies to so many threads..

Haters gonna hate.

Nothing you can do about it, to each their own.. etc.. etc..

As long as YOU enjoy it, who cares.

That'd be my defense in court as well.
