Saturated fat is still a lot better than the refined carbs you get from the white bread they use.

Crap, I actually forgot you weren't in Calgary.

There is actually a Crossfit Zone in Victoria.

Can't find prices though.

Doh, I could give you the address too.

Yup, as long the machines are supplementary to the rest, that should be fine.

I personally don't use any machines, but I workout at home. I am not sure if I'd use them if I had access to them though.

Maybe some pull down stuff....thats about it.

And the rowing machine.

I have invested over $600 in a Olympic Bar with 500# worth of weights.

Now I just need a power rack.

Yeah, my biggest problem is that the ceilings in my basement suite are 6' at their highest point. Anything that involves jumping or lifting stuff over my head is out of the question.

Yep, that's basically all I use them for. That and the weight-assisted pull-up machine because I'm still too weak to pull myself up more than twice.

Hi Mark, is there scientific evidence supporting what you’ve found in your experience? If there is could you send me a few links? I would be interested to look into this further.
Thanks,
Sonya

I also note this site is selling books and vitamins.

This post was brought to you by the Damage Control Master Formula, independently proven as the most comprehensive high-potency antioxidant multivitamin available anywhere
Here is a bit of an article on the supplements:

http://www.marksdailyapple.com/defin...pplementation/

As a side note, I have followed his site for about 1.5 years now and he rarely talks about supplements. He is all about whole foods etc. His book just came out in the last month or 2 if I remember correctly. You can find all the info contained in his book on his site.

With regards to the scientific evidence a lot of his articles usually have links to studies etc.

He is also a former marathoner/iron man competitor that has a lot of experience with cardio and long slow distance running...so he has first hand knowledge with regards to the chronic cardio.

Disclaimer: I derive most of my income from selling supplements.

Also, "first hand knowledge" or anecdotal evidence is unreliable.

Yeah, I kick myself for having bought a treadmill instead of a C2 rower a few years ago...I'd rather sub rowing for running than the other way around. 400m runs are predominant and the treadmill is not fast enough for that. It actually significantly slows me down on workouts like Helen and Nancy for example...

I wish I had an Olympic bumper set, but I am still using steel...I better make sure I don't drop my cleans or snatches!

But I DO have a power rack!

I have steel weights too. I didn't even realize what bumper weights were when I first got into this.

Oh well. I'm looking into buying some kind of mat so I can let them drop. Doing power cleans and having to lower the weight at the end is a bitch.

I'm still deciding whether I want the power rack or the rower more. Obviously doing squats is important, but I want to do more CFE.

And I can't right now.

Oh, and I think I should start a blog or something.

Numerous people have PMed me or emailed me asking for advice, and I'm happy to help, but its always confined to the single person.

I might get something going.

Yeah, that is why I posted that link. He states that anytime he talks about supplements. Follow his site for a while. You'll see his true colors...

I realize its anecdotal evidence, but I have read too many other accounts of this (mostly on the crossfit.com message boards) to not believe its validity.

I personally like first hand experience when it comes to fitness and nutrition. Peoples lives are too unpredictable to control absolutely every variable and coming from someone that has been through it/experienced it, I value it accordingly.

In my opinion it seems science usually is way behind the curve when it comes to fitness and nutrition.

I hate running anything more than 1 mile though, so it suits me either way!

I will say that Crossfit training (basically running no more 400m bursts in a workout) got me a 5 km time of ~19:00 min. I know that is nothing for a marathoner, but for a guy that hates running...not too shabby.

Yeah, that would be pretty tough...you need to be able to go overhead for a lot of stuff...

Yeah, it's hard to decide sometimes...oh to have unlimited funds!!!

I want bumper plates, C2 rower, kettlebells, Glute/Ham machine...the list could go on and on...

Add a medicine ball to that list.

Sears actually has a 8# ball for 30 bucks.

I might order it.

The absolute ultimate for me would be to have an awesome gym garage like a lot of these guys have, but I'm in a condo. I'm limited in what I can do with crossfit as well. I have a bench with a rack so I can do bench press, squats, and any shoulder movement. And I have one kettlebell. But I don't have the ability to do true Olympic powerlifting because of livng in a condo, and I can't drop the weights. And I also don't have the room to do kipping pullups or double unders. I get by, but I wish I could have either a garage gym, or the ability to go to a crossfit gym.

Yup...you just have to make do with what you have. Sometimes you have to get creative with substitutions - sometimes they work well, sometimes not so much...

So I've got a pretty important fitness test on Tuesday. It's the PARE for anyone who is familiar with it...or if you aren't, you can Google it for more info.

Can I get some suggestions on what I can start doing today in order to be as ready as possible for Tuesday? For example, crossfit.com says a 5k run for today, but I'm not sure how much I should follow that routine leading up to the test. Also, what should I be eating in the days ahead of this? And what should I plan to eat Tuesday morning?
