Outside of Sean McVay what coordinator has actually been good. Pederson in Philly was good, but the list of coaches winning are the old guard. Obviously Tom Brady and Patrick Mahomes have something to do with it, but they have won different ways.

Andy Reid x3
Bill x3
John Fox x1
Bruce Arians x1

Did Fox actually win a Super Bowl? I thought that was Kubiak.

I don't think Super Bowls are the only measure for good coaches. Off the top of my head, former coordinators who seem to be doing a decent job as HCs:

Steichen
Ryans
Lafleur
Shanahan
McDaniels
McDermott
Harbaugh (was special teams coordinator for the Eagles before he got his HC gig with the Ravens)

Tomlin was a DC before getting his HC gig. Think that prolly counts

Or are we just saying OC? I don’t always read so good

Having the 17th game and the 7th seed has allowed teams to basically sacrifice week 1. Seven losses has been good enough to make the playoffs in either conference every year since they went to the current format. Back when it was 16 games and six teams in the playoffs you usually had to have no more than six losses (except for horrible division champs) to get in. So you can essentially treat week 1 as another preseason game, and go 10-6 the rest of the way like you used to have to do to make the playoffs.

Just to be clear is that Josh McDaniels?

Some of them are good coaches for sure, but they have never gotten over the hump. Obviously it took the coaches I listed time as well.

Harbaugh kind of falls in with the group I listed for me.

Seems like a coordinator has a good season, and they get poached as the next hot shot McVay. Look at Staley.

You are correct it was Kubiak but he was on the staff with Fox correct>

I think rube means Mike McDaniel, although at this stage the verdict is very much out on him.

Nope. Fox left after the 2015 playoffs and went on to stink up the join with the Bears.

I mean this whole premise is kind of ridiculous. Maybe back in the day guys became head coaches without starting at the assistant (or lower) level, but every coach now started as an assistant (or lower) of some kind. So pretty much every good coach was a coordinator or something adjacent to begin with. Same with every mediocre, bad, Urban Meyer, and every other type of coach in between.

Yeah they all come from being a coordinator or positional coach these days. Not every great coordinator makes for a great head coach as the role is different. Norv Turner and Wade Phillips for example were really good coordinators but not good head coaches. Really a lot of the lower key hirings like Tomlin, John Harbaugh, Campbell excel more than the hotshot coordinators as head coaching comes down more to leadership and commanding respect of the locker room over X & O scheming alone.

Part of the issue to me is coordinators moving to HC positions too early. Successful coaches seem to have long time coordinators that are happy being coordinators. They are not all HC candidates. It also makes for an easier succession plan.

I was super high on Saleh, a great DC, and really wanted him to be the coach of the Eagles when got rid of Pederson. Bullet dodge but also not sold on Sirianni.
